Why doesn't my washing smell like theirs?

sparklyIsPretty · 23/05/2023 06:55

When I visited my mum last week, she had used the loveliest smelling washing detergent/softener. I asked her what it was and then got some for my washing.

I was disappointed to find out my washing didn't smell the same.

Anyone know why that could be?

Could the products look similar, but are actually different?

I use Ariel Biological powder. We always shop at the same place and buy the same size box.

Except one week we shopped somewhere else and they only had smaller boxes of Ariel Biological powder.

The smell of the smaller box was totally different!

Looking closer at the packaging, one has extra branding about being clean at colder temperatures (unfortunately, I found this one didn’t wash well at any temperature!).

Moral of the story is, one Ariel Biological power product is not the same as another Ariel Biological powder. They both smell totally different.

This may be happening with other brands too? Could be what happened to you?

I agree that smelling fabric softeners on other people is awful. A clean smell is actually no smell.

That's fine for you but OP likes the smell so she wants her clothes to smell of it

It's pointless
OP "I want my clothes to smell nice"
Replies "I don't like the scent you want them to smell of"
Confused

madeinmanc · 23/05/2023 09:29

Because when you walk around in a public space, you shouldn't have to breathe in wafts of cloying, artificial scents mixed with BO. It's as bad as vapers and smokers inflicting their smell on everyone else. And the biggest lie of them all is that is smells good.

Kyse23 · 23/05/2023 09:41

I don't particularly want to smell weed or listen to my neighbours children screeching or other people shit music but we don't t live in a bubble so it is what it is
If it's mixed with BO that's another issue but that's like saying everyone who uses scented laundry stuff smells of body odour
I would much rather smell persil than someone who hasn't washed

Why would it be mixed with BO? Using fabric conditioner doesn’t mean people don’t wash their bodies 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oh gosh the smell snobs are out!

I find liquid or powder the best, I don’t like the wash pods or gel ones. It’s ok to want your clothes to smell nice and fresh, I do too!

My nana always used the Bold lavender and camomile and her washing always smelled amazing. I buy it now and again when I want a reminder of her, but like you I can never quiet recreate it, but perhaps the formula of the powder has changed since all those years ago.

I used to really like the Surf tropical Lilly liquid as it used to leave clothes smelling lovely and fresh without being overly flowery smelling and I find that’s different these days too.

Lcb123 · 23/05/2023 09:46

Different machine and how clean it it, which detergent you use, what cycle you use, how you dry it. I personally don’t like that over strong smell of fabric conditioner

This is true - clean smells of nothing

OP: What brand was it just out of interest?
I love lovely smelling laundry.

Just what I was going to ask.
In Europe I buy Bold powder and the smell makes me instantly relaxed (yes, I sniff the box every time I wash - and sometimes when I don't --.
It isn't the same at all in the UK. 🙁

fetchacloth · 23/05/2023 10:24

Newer washing machines use less water for rinsing and this may be the reason for washing smelling differently.
I noticed this straightaway when I changed my machine a couple of years ago.
No amount of machine cleaning cycles change this unfortunately 🙄

Ha, I thought I was the only one who'd noticed this!

I don't think the cold water/dissolves quickly one is quite as good either.

It's probably a 'new and improved recipe!' situation and some shops are still selling the older stock.

good, I’m glad I’m not alone in noticing. The cold wash Ariel is so bad, isn’t it!

I’m having to add vanish powder to the wash to get the clothes clean - even on 40 degree washes!

I use a magno ball, helps soften the water, and it makes a difference too.
Have one for my dishwasher too

I'm intrigued, can you tell me more please?

Nsky62 · 23/05/2023 12:39

Pixiedust1234
Yes magno balls, from ecozone descaler as such, magnets soften the water, making clothes cleaner, about £10 to buy.
Great they are x

BobsYerAunty · 23/05/2023 12:44

Always some oddballs who come on threads to say they hate the smell of fabric conditioner, perfume etc.

Thanks for telling us completely pointlessly.

DanceMumTaxi · 23/05/2023 12:54

I bet she uses more than you are and probably puts fewer clothes in the machine. I know someone who’s washing always smells amazing. They use Ariel powder, Lenore spring fresh softener and spring fresh scent boosters. But they use loads more of the scent booster beads than the instructions say to use. There was an AMA a few years back by someone who develops laundry detergent - it was great.

maryberryslayers · 23/05/2023 13:30

I had this, I have to use 2 pods and half a lid of softener to get the washing uk smell fresh.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 23/05/2023 07:37

Has your mum got an old machine? Both me and mum have found our washing is just not the same since getting new machines. She’s always moaning about her cardboard towels! Her old machine used to use hot water. We’re convinced cold fill aren’t the same. Also new water efficient machines just do things differently! Don’t overfill your softener drawer. I found that if I filled it too near to the top I couldn’t smell it - it was all getting swished away before the final rinse! Filling it less I’ve found that works better for me! I’ve learned to live with my disappointments but it’s so so hard. I am extremely sensory-led and smell and touch bring me immense joy so I’m heartbroken when it’s taken away from me 😟 I am still not quite over Asda discontinuing their ‘Line Fresh’ smell. Now that did bring me joy! I’m still imagining it now. And missing it… 😢

I used to like Line Fresh too

SeaPink · 23/05/2023 13:36

I used to love Comfort Naturals Aloe Vera too. It was discontinued ages ago, but it was lovely

I remember that thread, it was brilliant wasn't it?

WestHamAreMassive · 23/05/2023 13:44

i worked out it was my dosing - I'd got a new machine with a bigger drum and was still only using one pod (Ariel with a touch of lenor) now I use two
and it's much better.

WestHamAreMassive · 23/05/2023 13:45

I used to like the gel as well but I can't bloody squeeze it
