Are you doing 'no mow may' ?

We have large front and back lawns and doing the no mow may the grass is lush and imo flowers, bees, insects and birds visiting are fantastic. We've had goldfinches visit for the first time pecking on grass seeds and various visitors coming in for a peck about.
Our neighbour, on the other hand has started mowing his two lawns twice a week, normally does once a fortnight. PA or what? 😀
Personally couldn't care less what other people do with their gardens but it is amusing all the same.
Anyone else doing the no mow thing and if so, how's it going?

Thanks @Perihelion I've been feeling a bit rubbish seeing everything on tiktok all the flowers/bees but, with 5 people in my area already diagnosed with Lyme not all of us have the same freedom to do it.

MonumentalLentil · 22/05/2023 13:35

Ours isn't mown, however we have random flowers in it from seeds that setted in from hanging baskets and pots, so have been mowing round them anyway. Our borders are wild at the moment, there are some small shrubs in there somewhere but I leave them for the hedgehogs to hide in. Woodpile at the top, by the hedgehog house is overgrown with ivy and bindweed. I do pull a few weeds out so I can see what is there but generally I have a wildlife friendly garden.

Some interesting plants/weeds from when I used the non growing bird seed which was the end of a nice lawn. So many of the arseholes aound us have destroyed trees, insects and wildlife that it seems I am the only person who cares.

BreathesOutSlowly · 22/05/2023 13:37

We're going full rewilding in our suburban back garden. Looks very incongruous when viewed from the roof and compared with all the other gardens in the street. Loads of insects and birds though.

We have a hedgehog house, its not for show but is a requirement from the local rescue for when we release them back into the wild (we also have holes in the bottom of the fences and feed/water every night).

lljkk · 22/05/2023 13:38

DH did it last year & still shudders in horror about it. May is the month when grass grows fastest.

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 22/05/2023 13:39

Yes, we are not mowing the back or front lawns. Both are full of buttercups and daisies and lots of different grasses. I have borders and flower beds full of bee friendly plants too.

AlisonDonut · 22/05/2023 13:39

We didn't mow for 3 weeks because our robot mower had to go back for a new motor. But he's been back 2 weeks and he's just about caught up.

We grow tons of actual wild flowers all over, but if we have a lawn we want it to be tidy. It looks fantastic at the moment.

bakermummy21 · 22/05/2023 13:42

We didn't mow as had nesting birds in our garden and didn't want to disturb them but grow many insect living plants and a field next door

NunoEspíritoSanto · 22/05/2023 13:44

Sigh. I wish being affected by climate change was a personal choice but there we go

We have a lovely long garden so the back half is "no mow may" and its full of flowers, birds, blue butterflies, bees and the wildlife pond is buzzing with life.

The front half of the lawn is mowed due to asthma and hay-fever

Our front garden has ended up being "no mow may" as we didn't have time to mow it but its full of wild flowers! I won't be mowing it now until June. Tiny blue flowers, tall white flowers, bluebells still & today I noticed we have tiny purple somethings growing in the mossy grass.

One neighbour has artificial grass and the other has a completely gravelled garden! 😂

rivercobbler · 22/05/2023 13:44

No, I am keeping the lawn short as it was really REALLY annoying me (much more than I expected it would), but tomorrow I am planting a 6m border full of flowering shrubs that are good for wildlife and insects.

TenoringBehind · 22/05/2023 13:44

No. My grass would be waist high and impossible to cut if we left it.

I have plenty of other wild and weedy areas in my garden though.

TheHandmaiden · 22/05/2023 13:45

It's interesting how things change - lawns were a thing when I grew up. Along with pesticides.

It's Chelsea this week and the show gardens I reckon will be free of grass. If you think about it, it's better in a garden to have a diverse range of plants than grass.

My guess is that people will stop maintaining them unless they want kids to have a play space. Lawns are a lot of effort.

peachicecream · 22/05/2023 13:10

So much of what is wrong with society stems from this sort of attitude.

@peachicecream - I totally agree with you. There were a few people on a thread on my local Facebook page the other day banging on and on about their 'right' to have fake grass and lay slabs over their entire garden and fuck anyone else who might be affected by rainwater run-off. Two of these goons have bought houses on a new build estate built on a floodplain, so I look forward to them being back on the same Facebook page at some stage asking for recommendations of local trades to repair flood damage to their homes.

QueenOfDuisburg · 22/05/2023 13:45

Yes, we did this last year too. In fact, our whole garden is pretty overgrown but we have various bird species nesting, squirrels nesting in the tree, frogs, hedgehogs and the bees and bugs love the long grass (and our neighbour's cat will sit for hours watching them)! The kids are nice ages to be interested in it all too, and the wild flowers are very pretty.

Last year we went all out and did 'bloom in June' too, although that might have been an excuse to delay having to tackle the overgrown lawn... 😏

Planttreeseverywhere · 22/05/2023 13:48

Yeah I'm on it, I have a long narrow garden with borders on each side so not so easy but I just trim the borders and it looks lush. It's full of life, I feel really proud that I'm doing my bit for a greater cause.

IaltagDhubh · 22/05/2023 13:51

No, because we only have a push mower and it really struggles when the grass gets too long, so I need to cut it a couple of times a week at this time of year. That said, the actual area of grass in our garden is tiny, and I’m working on replacing all the boring grass with more interesting and beneficial plants and ground cover anyway.

BreviloquentBastard · 22/05/2023 13:51

Not on purpose, I've just failed to mow my lawn so far this year. Oops.

Phos · 22/05/2023 13:54

Yes but only around the back, our nosy neighbours were giving us daily grief about it.

Some of the nay sayers might prefer plastic grass. No judging from me, each to their own.

Really? I think we should judge people who have plastic grass. It is so dreadful for the environment with virtually no redeeming features.

We struggled with a lawn (not through lack of work but due to conditions) and now don't have one but almost all of the garden is permeable and none of it is plastic.

Rampantukulele · 22/05/2023 13:58

We don't mow the front. We mow the back in May once then not again until September.

TabithaTitanium · 22/05/2023 14:00

Phos · 22/05/2023 13:54

Yes but only around the back, our nosy neighbours were giving us daily grief about it.

We bought a little sign to shut the neighbours up.

Are you doing 'no mow may' ?
hiredandsqueak · 22/05/2023 14:02

No because I have a gardener to cut the grass and don't want to lose him as they are like gold dust here. Our local council seem to have signed up to it though as there are only pathways cut into the grass on the fields and parks where I walk the dog just now. I stick to the paths with the dog as the grass is taller than her now but have enjoyed watching others' dogs chasing and enjoying the long grass.

verdantverdure · 22/05/2023 14:04

We're seeing far more birds in the garden because of No Mow May we think.

I saw a sign hammered into a clover strewn front lawn recently "No Mow May, (Not Lazy)"

TabithaTitanium · 22/05/2023 14:04

Yeah too right I judge idiots who have artificial grass there’s just no need, there are plenty of low/no maintenance alternatives to grass, Chamomile for example.

StillWantingADog · 22/05/2023 14:06

We have a not particularly big lawn divided by a path. DS plays football on one “half” and we have agreed for now to not mow the other half.
My dm is horrified!
