To wish I had money - it's as simple as that

Watched Rich House Poor House last night. The famous millionaire gay dad's were on it. Just looking at their house & their lives, I just wished money was no issue for me. They have houses in UK & florida & elsewhere. They own hotels in Spain plus much more.. They can jump on a business class flight whenever they want. Took us 2 years to save airmiles for business class flights for 2 of us. We're not Poor and are fortunate we can makes end meet but have had to cut back like everyone else due to COL. But to be able to jump on a flight and go anywhere at any time, to have the world at your feet, to never have to worry about money. I will never get to any of my dream holiday destinations due to cost. I'm currently debating if I can afford to spend £50 on a pair of Designer flip-flops. I can afford it but there are really other priorities where the £50 should go. We have some debt that we can afford to pay back, and we are paying back, the debt is a drop in the ocean for the dads on the TV show. They could pay it off in a month. It will take us several years.

How did those guys make their money? I missed the beginning.
But yeah I know what you mean.
P. S. Don't spend 50 quid on flip flops!!

Thesearmsofmine · 22/05/2023 11:28

I’d love to have enough money to even be considering spending £50 on a pair of flip flops. It’ll be the Primark ones for me.

Everyone wants more money but tbh I think it’s worth taking a step back and looking at our lives from the perspective of others. We don’t have much money wise but we have a roof over our heads and food in the cupboards and to some that’s the dream.

Damnspot · 22/05/2023 11:27

I would normally agree with you, but even I thought the OP was a piss take at first.

Exactly. A thread title that implies the OP doesn’t have any money but is which actually a moan that they aren’t a millionaire is not “this isn’t a race to the bottom” territory.

Unless they said it was lighthearted. Which I don’t think they did.

It's funny how people see things so differently. I've been skint my whole life, and I'm pretty sure I always will be. DH's job turned to shit over covid, so he's had to find a minimum wage job as well.
We're both in our 50's, work full time, don't go out, don't buy clothes unless they're falling off us. Most weeks I cry at some point over the lack of money, and genuinely don't know how we manage from one month to the next.

But you know what? There are people living in boxes, in tents, in famine. Could be a whole lot worse.

Stressing whether you can afford a £50 pair of flip flops 🤣

TheOrigRights · 22/05/2023 11:35

You do have money (to even be able to consider BC and £50 flip flops indicates this), you wish you had MORE money.

Very few people are able to live out any sort of dream of jumping on a plane, flying to wherever they want whenever they want.

EmpressSoleil · 22/05/2023 11:47

BC flights aren’t always that expensive. I paid £1600 BC (return) to Japan a year or two before covid with KLM. No points towards it at all. An economy ticket was around 700, premium economy around 1000. So it wasn’t “thousands” more. I know flights have gone up now but still. I’m not rich by any stretch of the imagination but it was worth it to me to save up that bit extra for comfort on such a long flight. So it’s certainly not an indicator of how well off someone is. Plenty of people with money choose economy.

In these times I think that if people can pay all their bills, food etc and have a bit left over for fun, then they should think themselves lucky. Yes I wish my money went as far as it used to. It is a bit gutting. But I know I’m lucky. So many have to worry about the basics. I’ve been there years ago and I am thankful every single day that I don’t have to do that now.

I think the amount of effort you went to, and made other people go to, just to fly business class is totally extreme. It seems like a really bizarre thing thing to fixate on. We all like holidays but it wouldn't even occur to me to be so jealous of those who fly business.

Yes, this. A huge amount of effort to go to.. to get Avios. Why?

I suppose because (quite a while back now) I’ve flown business class with work enough times it doesn’t hold any kind of glamour or allure for me. Perhaps if I were 6 foot 5 or something and the comfort difference was substantial, but I’m not and it isn’t. “Free” food is nice I suppose. Obviously I’d take business over economy but it’s not something I ever think about at all.

Most 'ordinary' people fantasise from time to time about having lottery-win amounts of money at their disposal - how easily many of life's problems would melt away if you had unlimited money to throw at them! And if you spend too long doing it, those feelings can tip over into envy and jealousy - totally normal.

All you can do is try to put it to one side and enjoy the good things in your own life, whether those are treats you can afford or non-material things such as good health or fulfilling relationships.

stayathomer · 22/05/2023 12:25

I wouldn’t envy people with tons of money- but yes I would rather not get that feeling when you get to the checkout and a shop costs more than you thought! We’re very lucky though- both working and we’re going abroad for the second year in a row- Italy (cheaper than anywhere else in Europe to fly to when we booked a year ago), staying in a eurocamp in a mobile home in the middle of nowhere. (We get loans out to pay for holidays then pay back over the year)

Righthandman · 22/05/2023 12:36

Just a slightly different perspective on the flipflops - I was embarrassed once to receive a pair as a gift that cost 45/50 pounds, I thought, who needs to spend that much on flipflops?! BUT, almost seven years later, they are still going strong! They were absolutely worth it, and cheaper than the 70ish I would have spent buying cheap ones every year. If I possibly could afford it I'd do the same again when they finally need to be replaced.

Blanketenvy · 22/05/2023 12:40

You sound incredibly shallow fixating on business class flights and designer flip flops. There's a distinct lack of self awareness in this post.

seatingavailable · 22/05/2023 12:41

It would be lush. Can you change jobs or do something which would enable you to go towards this kind of a life?

brandonflowersmushtash · 22/05/2023 13:11

You sound massively out of touch.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 23/05/2023 00:37

IMHO I think you need to change your mindset not necessarily your bank balance
12k on business class flights? Just why is that a life goal?
As for the £50 flip flops... You're an adult!
Budgeting issues are a constant worry for me as I'm unable to work due to lifelong disability... but guess what? Im happy with life and what I have( not a lot)
appreciate what you have now
Tomorrow isn't guaranteed

I really think you have to be happy with what you have. Possibly I have largely simple tastes but I think I have most things I want. Ok I don’t have multiple houses in different continents but the world only has finite resources.

I genuinely don’t envy people who are richer than me.

I still have the ones from accessorised that I took to hospital when dd1 was born. She’s 14 🤣

girlfriend44 · 27/08/2023 15:56

To anyone moaning, just think of people in Africa for example who are starving hungry and have nothing, to them you are rich.

ManchesterLu · 27/08/2023 16:30

I always feel like I want money, because it makes me angry seeing what other people do with theirs. Or like when people win the lottery and they just blow it all.

I have a full on plan (I know, I know) about what I'd do if I won, and it involves making life comfortable for me, family and friends, and helping out charities that I work with. If I won, I could stop working and dedicate more time to the charities and things I enjoy doing.

Other people just seem to blow thousands on cars and millions on houses.. I'D DO IT BETTER! 😂
