Would you hire a holiday cottage that had a beehive in the garden?

Quite a big garden, beehive is a long way from house.

Personally it would put me off.

I’m not a holiday cottage kind of person but this would be a positive addition for me.

Chemenger · 21/05/2023 08:00

This would definitely be a positive for me, makes the garden sound idyllic.

Scoutingforhoney · 21/05/2023 08:51

The garden really is gorgeous, loads of fruit trees. There is cherry plum which, if you pull out the stone and then push a blackberry in, is the best flavour explosion ever. I stood under that tree so often last summer, quietly munching. Divine!

Yes. Stayed in a city centre hotel that had bee hives and loved watching them.

WhyAmITired · 21/05/2023 08:55

I wouldn't like it because I have young children and I'd either be telling them constantly to leave it alone or telling them constantly that the bees were not on a deliberate mission to sting them to death.

For adults or older children it may be ok as long as there were no allergies.

Georgiepud · 20/05/2023 21:50

How close is the nearest A & E?
I'm terrified of them, even the sound, so I wouldn't.

Surely the bees are not aggressive and will not go after you?

You need medical help only if you are allergic to the bee sting, otherwise there's no risk.

Bees are not aggressive.

LindorDoubleChoc · 21/05/2023 08:56

Absolutely not. No way.

DinosApple · 21/05/2023 09:03

I'd use it as a selling point tbh.

There's plenty of people interested in nature who wouldn't be put off by this and would probably be attracted to it. We have teen and preteen DC.

We wouldn't have booked when they were tiny unless it was fenced off though.

We stayed in an off grid tiny eco cottage before and it's all a novelty if it's only for a week!

EggInANest · 21/05/2023 09:05

If I had beehives I wouldn’t trust them to holiday cottage visitors.

People can be very ignorant / negligent / selfish.

bussteward · 21/05/2023 09:06

Yes! It sounds dreamy.

TheHandbag · 21/05/2023 09:07

I'd fence off the bee hives and make it less obvious. If it's at the bottom of the garden just section off the area so there's no danger of balls knocking the hives etc. Quite easy to do.

Bees are not aggressive.

You're right, but my mum was a real flapper and shrieked around them so I've learnt that behaviour since tiny. Just petrified, like some are of mice.
The overwhelming consensus on here is go for it.

DinosApple · 21/05/2023 09:08

Also put some information on the bees in the welcome pack in case your DP isn't about when guests arrive.

BriarHare · 21/05/2023 09:09

Yes, we’d love that.

HoliOrangeBlossom · 21/05/2023 09:09

No

KimberleyClark · 21/05/2023 09:10

Wouldn’t bother me. Bees are not aggressive like wasps can be.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 21/05/2023 09:13

No it wouldn't put me off. The DC are teens so can be trusted.

Has it got a little fence and gate around it?

ChaToilLeam · 21/05/2023 09:13

I’d love it. Bees are fascinating! But it needs to be clear for anyone with allergies, and I would join other posters in recommending the hives be fenced off for the bees’ protection. Don’t underestimate how dopey some people can be when it comes to wildlife.

OrigamiOwls · 21/05/2023 09:16

It wouldn't automatically put me off, I'd just want know they were away from the house.

MonumentalLentil · 21/05/2023 09:17

I would love it, however I would be very wary of renting it out. There are far too many ignorant people that would mess with things they know nothing about, and ruin things. You have no way of knowing what stupid antics they would get up to, not just with the bees but the orchard as well.

Fence the whole thing off maybe. Or sell it to me...

lightbulbmomentsintown · 21/05/2023 09:23

If I had an allergy to bee stings then yes. But if not, no! Bees keep themselves to themselves doing their thing. If it's a big garden and you leave them alone, can't see why there would be a problem.

Brackenfield · 21/05/2023 09:26

Unless you're allergic why would there be an issue? Bees keep to themselves unless bothered

TiredOfCleaning · 21/05/2023 09:28

No, I'd be thrilled. But no bee allergies here.

Grumpyfroghats · 21/05/2023 09:29

I would worry about insurance if I was the one renting it out. If someone did suffer an allergic reaction, could they sue you? I would want to discuss it with the insurance company and make sure I was covered.

I wouldn't rent it myself as I have football mad young children and would worry about them accidentally hitting the hive.

TiredOfCleaning · 21/05/2023 09:32

I meant 'no, it would not put me off'. for clarity
