Wisdom tooth extraction that hasn't erupted

namechngd · 20/05/2023 20:22

Anyone had this done ? Mine is growing sideways and pushing on the tooth in front, causing lots of jaw pain.
The other one (llr) came through years ago but only partially, causing loads of trouble over the years and that's coming out too but I'm not too worried about that one.

The dentist said they will chip away at the bone for the one that hasn't erupted 😱 any experiences would be much appreciated ! Will it be a hospital job? Please tell me they knock you out??

Here's a pic of the one that's stuck under the gum line !

Mine were at a 90 degree angle too and never erupted but were still causing chaos. I had them out under general anaesthetic in hospital. It was really quick in and out in a morning and the surgical staff and nurses were really attentive.

Glad to hear you was put under, just reading about it now and freaking out thinking no way could I be awake for that !!

How was your recovery ?

I had one like this extracted while I was awake, they chipped it out of the bone, tbh it was totally fine so don't worry too much about it!

LER83 · 20/05/2023 20:53

I had 2 like that and had them out in hospital under general anesthetic. I felt quite groggy for a good few days, and took me a good couple of weeks before I could chew properly (had one out each side). Healed well and never had any further issues, was about 15 years ago now!

LadyLolaRuben · 20/05/2023 20:54

I had both lower impacted wisdom teeth out. I went through my private insurance and had general anaesthetic. I didnt want or need to be part of the extraction process

Interesting you was awake. And you must be brave ! Was this at a hospital or the dentist ??

This is how I feel, I don't want to be aware

Thanks for your experience, did you have any bruising and swelling ?

I had all four out at once under GA. The lower ones were at 90degrees. The surgeon said he cut them up in situ and removed them in two or three pieces, rather than make a large hole in the bone. (I've still got them in a jar somewhere 😄)

It was meant to be day surgery, but I had to stay the night because I hadn't wee'ed and either fell over or walked into the wall whenever they got me up out of bed. I don't recover quickly from GA. I feel fine, no nausea or anything, I'm just 'tipsy' for several days after.

DozyDelia · 20/05/2023 21:06

Yep. had it done 40 years ago! So dentistry wasn't as good then as now.

I had 6 local jabs to freeze it. Local dentist.
It came out with some pulling and the bone had to be cut into. No pain.

I was FINE. Drove myself home, around 7 miles, and was into work the next day teaching 30 secondary age students.

People had warned me I might bruise and all kinds of scare stories none of which happened.

chickbean · 20/05/2023 21:06

I only had three! All taken out under local anaesthic. First two piece of piss, third I nearly bit the dentist's finger off!! Not painful though.

Spicypeanuts · 20/05/2023 21:06

You could probably have that out under sedation and be fine. It's partially erupted which will make it much easier than if it was fully impacted.

I have had a fully impacted wisdom tooth removed with just your standard numbing injections and I wouldn't recommend it. Sedation or nitrous at the very least.

DozyDelia · 20/05/2023 21:07

Oh and I had a few stitches in the gum which were removed about 10 days later .

I would keep an open mind and not expect the worst.

DozyDelia · 20/05/2023 21:08

@Spicypeanuts It just shows how we are all different. I had the same as you and was fine - far less trouble than I'd been led to believe.
If it hurts, they've not used enough anaesthetic.

BonnieGlasses · 20/05/2023 21:08

I have one like this and I'm on the waiting list for an extraction at the dental hospital. I went for an initial appointment and they said I'd be awake but obviously numbed up during the extraction and they'd put a stitch in afterwards if necessary.

They said they don't do it under general anesthetic unless they really have to for extremely anxious patients, and you wait longer for that as more staff are needed for the procedure.

DozyDelia · 20/05/2023 21:10

I don't think they offer sedation at dentists (correct me if this is wrong) as it can be very dangerous and they are supposed to have someone there to resucitate etc.

Dilbertian · 20/05/2023 21:13

Massive swelling. Described variously as chipmunk or cherub. When I got home I put a ruler under my chin. My jaw rested on it for 7".

The external swelling was virtually gone by day 3 or 4, by which time the bruising was showing. Not around the jaw. No, the blood moves down between your muscles and shows up on the sides of your neck.

CrapBucket · 20/05/2023 21:14

I am usually a tough cookie but am very bad at wisdom teeth extraction. Have had one out with local and one with general.

Go General.

Both experiences were frankly brutal and complicated to recover from. But the only I was unconscious for was way better than the one seared into my memory!

Most people are a lot better at it than me, and despite the fact I took ages to recover it was all worth it to not have the teeth any more. Good luck.

Thepossibility · 20/05/2023 21:23

I had all four done at once under GA. Bottom two growing sideways. I was spitting splinters of tooth out for a year afterwards. Actual surgery fine, but one of my eyes couldn't shut for ages after so that was weird. Recovery was obviously painful, but at least I lost a little weight.

slowrunner07 · 20/05/2023 21:27

"Interesting you was awake. And you must be brave ! Was this at a hospital or the dentist ??"

It was at the dentist. Had the numbing injections, I don't recall any pain, just some pressure. No bruising or swelling, easy recovery.

I wasn't brave at all, I was absolutely terrified 😂 but it was actually absolutely fine.

namechngd · 20/05/2023 21:30

Seems so varied !
The partially impacted one the dentist said can come out at the dental surgery but it's the one that's still below the gum line he said hospital, it's not erupted at all not one bit.

Just sick of pain and the partially erupted one getting infected all the time ! I also keep biting my cheek because it gets caught between the top tooth and the wisdom, it's so sore !

I had 2 impacted wisdom teeth and has them out under GA in hospital- I elected to have all 4 out. Op was in the afternoon and husband took me home after a couple of hours. Had painkillers and it was fine, didn’t fancy eating anything apart from soup for a week so lost half a stone 😆

timetorefresh · 20/05/2023 21:34

I had all 4 of mine out while i was awake, done in two sets of 2. They had to take bone out. My face was ridiculously swollen after. I couldn't eat anything solid.

namechngd · 20/05/2023 21:48

Weight loss could be a bonus then 😆 struggling to shift the baby weight so might be a perk

I had this done last month, local anaesthetic, at the dentist. It wasn’t painful, but it was quite uncomfortable - a lot of pulling at my mouth to get the instruments in and what have you.

The dentist said my jaw bone was very strong, and he ended up having to pretty much smash the tooth out. I was surprised by how vigorous it all was - felt like he was kind of levering against my other teeth. I had always assumed teeth were more vulnerable than that, but apparently not.

My dentist has a TV screen on the ceiling, always playing MTV 00s Hits channel, which is adequately distracting.

It was a good few days before I could eat much more than ice cream and yoghurt, and it was quite painful during that time.

Thankfully my other wisdom teeth came in straight, so hopefully that’s the first and last time.
