What's the best airport you've been to?

I thought I'd start a thread on best airports as the flip side of the thread about the worst ones.

I'll start: Alicante. Rebuilt since I was last there thirty years ago. Very light and spacious. We were very quickly through bag drop and security. Lots of coffee and food places, including once you're through to the actual gates. Lots of staff for those passengers needing assistance. Very clean everywhere. Good aircon.

Another vote for Liverpool too, lovely chilled out easy to navigate airport.

We're off to Singapore later this year so I'm looking forward to that based on above posts.

Koh Samui. We made a huge mistake and ate just outside the airport as we were early, then our departure lounge had a free buffet- was gutted I wasn't hungry at all. (and this was for a Ryanair equivalent priced 1hr flight- and when I say 'buffet', I mean lots of amazing food). Outdoors and so pretty.

Knock (Ireland West) to Liverpool is just the best flight route. Knock has 2 gates (actually 3 but never seen the 3rd used) and is more like a train station. Biggest queue I've ever been in for security is 5 people. Always sail through security at Liverpool too- even during the times Dublin and Manchester were in the news daily for their 3 hour+ queues. Both still have free drop off and pickup.

Singapore- we had HOURS of queuing through immigration so that's off my list!

Transit and facilities - Changi, Singapore
Small outdoor and gateway to paradise Kona, Hawaii

Heraklion - dangerously overcrowded, filthy dirty, unbearably hot and disorganised too. A disgrace to Greece and the island of Crete.

Gatwick also up there, especially the North Terminal and sky bridge. Some gates are miles away and involve endless stairs. Not good before or after a red eye flight.

Wrong thread. This is about airports you like.

San Francisco. Monorail totally cool and great to keep kids amused while waiting for people to arrive. Very easy pick up and drop off.

KimberleyClark · 20/05/2023 20:42

Narita is lovely. I still have a kimono I bought there 22 years ago.

I lost the one I bought at Narita, and I'm still annoyed about it.

Humberside. If you get someone to pick you up from a flight, you get them to wait in a farm gateway down the single track road until they see your flight land. Give it 10 mins, then drive down the road and pick you up. Easy.

I also miss Doncaster. Bloody bastards who closed it. Angry

Mother87 · 20/05/2023 20:54

Singapore Changi & Istanbul

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 20/05/2023 20:56

Not sure it's the best but it's my most memorable- Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok. Spent a lot of time travelling through there between January and March 2012 and once spent a whole day there due to DH booking really cheap flights which meant we got there really early in the morning and the flight out wasn't until the evening. I did see some kind of famous Thai pop band though. Prettiest airport probably Koh Samui

I liked Hong Kong International. Well designed with good facilities.

I seem to recall Bangkok airport being nice too but we were only transferring there so didn’t experience the whole airport in the way you normally would.

See my post about Bangkok airport lol

feelingthankful · 20/05/2023 21:00

Another vote for Koh Samui in top spigot with Singapore in second. For European travel, departing from Liverpool would be my top choice for convenience of parking, lack of queues etc

Lagershandy · 20/05/2023 21:03

@ thenightsky I totally agree with you about Doncaster airport, the owners ought to hang their heads in shame.

Beezknees · 20/05/2023 21:11

Dubai. I've only transitioned through it but it's always been great and smooth, lots of shopping choices, quick through security.

Worst is Boa Vista which is basically just a tin shack, and Birmingham because I've never not had to wait over an hour in the queue for security.

Blomonje · 20/05/2023 21:15

Schiphol in Amsterdam has an art museum inside the airport. They regularly rotate the collections from the main museum in the city. It’s a great way to kill time and pick up a bit of culture while waiting for your flight. There’s also an outdoor terrace where you can watch the planes taking off.

EllaPaella · 20/05/2023 21:18

I love Newcastle. So so easy to get to (20 mins taxi or 30 mins metro), always quick and easy getting through security and everything always easy and well organised

IBelieveInAThingCalledScience · 20/05/2023 21:19

Malaysia and Seoul.

Immaculately clean, bright and airy with interesting shops and facilities.

Maggiesgirl · 20/05/2023 21:21

Changi for all sining and dancing, Bournemouth for small and efficient.

PtarmisanCheese · 20/05/2023 21:22

Recently been to Schiphol Airport and loved it, very clean, well set out so it never felt busy.
The clock is amazing, and I loved the little touches like cows on the walls.

I really want to go to Changi airport in Singapore, it’s supposed to be incredible.
I also want to go to Denver International Airport for the weird conspiracies around it!

Having not travelled for over 30 years I now want to travel loads, mainly to see the airports 😂

Countrydiary · 20/05/2023 21:29

Springfield, Missouri. This was years ago mind you. Inexplicably Richard Hammond popped up when you logged onto WiFi with a quote saying he thought it was the nicest airport in the world. It’s really big with about four flights a day, massive comfy armchairs and just so quiet and chilled. Zero queues for anything. Because we were transferring elsewhere within the States to fly back to the UK we attracted quite a crowd of staff at immigration to see a non US citizen go through passport control procedure.

tinytemper66 · 20/05/2023 21:29

Murcia. Small but clean and airy. A few shops but not really needed more. Alicante is another nice one.

citylifemummy · 20/05/2023 21:31

amicissimma · 20/05/2023 21:43

Savannah/Hilton Head. Their seating is rocking chairs. There are even rocking chairs outside at the bus stop for town.
