What's the best airport you've been to?

I thought I'd start a thread on best airports as the flip side of the thread about the worst ones.

I'll start: Alicante. Rebuilt since I was last there thirty years ago. Very light and spacious. We were very quickly through bag drop and security. Lots of coffee and food places, including once you're through to the actual gates. Lots of staff for those passengers needing assistance. Very clean everywhere. Good aircon.

Singapore. Obviously.

Where else are you going swimming in between flights? It's a destination in itself!

Dubaibutwhy · 20/05/2023 18:00

Food options not great at Singapore Changi.

Recently impressed by Vienna

I loved the butterflies in Singapore, just what we needed after a long flight. But I also have a very soft spot for the library in Amsterdam.

LightDrizzle · 20/05/2023 18:04

Faro. It’s small, clean with plenty of seats and enough food outlets and the parking is cheap and all within a short walk. They have Kiss and Fly right by the terminal so you can drop off and collect with 10 mins free of any charge. Great for those with pushchairs and wheelchairs with luggage.

Teacakeorcrumpet · 20/05/2023 18:04

Singapore Changi is amazing if you've a few hours to kill. Great showers, huge spacious lounges and loads of entertainment.

I prefer small airports though. Nice is fab for south of France. City is good if its empty but its always rammed with nowhere to sit.

Flying to the Maasai Mara is my most memorable landing ever and you loaded/unloaded your bags yourself! Victoria airport on Vancouver Island for the seaplanes is also cool.

Shannon is a dream to travel through especially with children as it's so small and never too much queuing plus you can bring liquids in your hand luggage so no stress about making sure you have things decanted into the small bottles. Although I believe a lot more airports now have those scanners so hopefully we will see that rule being relaxed everywhere

Singapore and Keflavic

Takoneko · 20/05/2023 18:15

I’d forgotten Keflavik. Great airport. So straightforward to get through and really well laid out.

useitorlose · 20/05/2023 18:16

Muscat, Oman - a breeze to travel through

Kindofcrunchy · 20/05/2023 18:19

Sydney airport is great, so easy to get off the plane and hop straight onto a train into the city. Most of the internal flights I took in Australia were really good actually.

Singapore Changi was by far the best I’ve been to.

Oh the shopping!!!!

Haywirecity · 20/05/2023 18:25

Doha. But it was so big we caught a mini train round it.

Backstreets · 20/05/2023 18:25

Seconding Hong Kong and Copenhagen. Helsinki was good too even if the prices made my eyes water, even for an airport.

going to Japan soon and very excited to see what Tokyo’s is like.

Another shout out for the former Doncaster Airport. Small enough so you don't feel it's impersonal, but it's got a few places to eat.

I once got delayed there for two hours, not only were we told what the problem was and what time they'd make the next announced but the crew came over and talked to groups of passengers to explain what was happening, what they were doing, and how long the problem would take to solve. Exemplary.

Someone I know did the initial talks to staff about job search ect when Peel Group decided to close the airport. They said they'd never come across a group of people who loved where they worked, as much as those. It showed in their service.

Best Dubai. Worst Tanzania

HundredMilesAnHour · 20/05/2023 18:33

Samui airport is my all time favourite. It's like a huge Tiki hut of an airport that is partly open to outside. Fabulous departure gates where all passengers can help themselves to drinks and snacks. And great shopping! Best airport ever.

I also really like Adelaide airport (especially the Penfolds wine bar). And used to like London City until they started doing more leisure flights so now it's more of a faff as there are more Gatwick-style clueless travellers. Bring back the efficient Canary Wharfers please!

xelous · 20/05/2023 18:34

Koh Samui airport! It's so pretty 😍

Magnoliainbloom · 20/05/2023 18:35

Oslo Torp. You can whizz through security and get to your gate in 7 mins. I love the simplicity of it. I’m not a fan of gargantuan ones with endless shops and gates. Small, functional, and simple are the best.

I also loved Socotra airport. It’s basically a room. When you disembark, you are greeted by paintings of the local trees.

What's the best airport you've been to?
xelous · 20/05/2023 18:35

@HundredMilesAnHour snap!

BitOutOfPractice · 20/05/2023 18:35

Southend. Covid nearly killed it but slowly it’s coming back. Chilled, quiet, no stress, quick. Lovely!

Pedallleur · 20/05/2023 18:37

Some yrs ago but Jackson, Wyoming. A runway, a waiting area and a baggage hall. Only did internal flights and the biggest plane was a 737. Denver was nice. I had a spell of in/out of Geneva and that was enjoyable. Unlike the he'll hole of Manchester some places can do it right. It's obv a difficult job moving 1000s of people and their luggage but Mcr seems to make it all just hard work for the passenger.

FlounderingFruitcake · 20/05/2023 18:38

I hate to say it because it has an awful rep but La Guardia. Top notch Centurion lounge. Vending machines selling everything from uniqlo clothes to benefit cosmetics. TSA pre check means my liquids stay in my bag and shoes are staying on. They let me carry sleeping DD through one time and lifted everything onto the belt for me. When she was awake they gave her a junior TSA officer badge sticker. Great celeb spotting too.

Also quite impressed with Gatwick recently. Paid £5 for premium security and from
stepping of the train to joining my friend in the bar was 7 minutes!

OP I was at Alicante this week and it was awful. They had 2 flights going from our gate within 20 minutes of each other so it was total chaos and the loos were filthy.

FlounderingFruitcake · 20/05/2023 18:41

Also weirdest airport but has anyone else been to Denver and seen the horrific murals and the masonic stone slab? Or heard the conspiracy theories about the tunnels?
