When did you last buy a tv?

Mine is about 13 years old and I feel like I've been left in the dark ages as I haven't a clue about smart TVs, I don't stream, don't watch 'catch-up' tv or whatever. This is mainly a financial decision as I can't justify monthly payments for telly but actually if my current one broke down I'd be completely lost as to what to buy.

Anyone else?

Have I got the wrong end of the stick and actually it's worth having a more high tech tv? I haven't been bothered to look into it as, to me, it's a minefield and I've got enough on my brain.

How old is your tv?

Mine is 9 years old. It's a smart TV but I've never used any of the smart features

SugarAndSpike · 17/05/2023 20:19

Oh I assumed smart just meant you could connect it to the internet and watch iplayer etc. Am I right?

Ours is 12.5 years old and we use a Roku stick to connect it to the Internet via the USB port.

User14528564 · 17/05/2023 20:22

newer TVs have the apps on for streaming but you can just use a Roku or firestick for this

our main TV is 2 years old as we treated ourselves to a new one when we retired, one upstairs is 2015 model from downstairs and the one we use in the caravan is an old 2006 one which has a very good picture and still works well

Haematomato · 17/05/2023 20:25

I couldn't be without my smart TV. Netflix, Prime, BBC, Disney+ etc all accessible with one button on the remote. Also the ability to cast and stream from other devices easily and no need for big clunky streaming/subscription boxes that don't match the rooms aesthetic. It makes things so much easier and quicker to use.

CityCommuter · 17/05/2023 20:26

Yes it's worth having a smart tv for catch up / players. You don't have to pay a monthly fee for anything but most people choose at least one subscription like Netflix which is cheap and handy if you want to watch a movie or a good documentary and if there's nothing worth watching on the actual telly!

AnnaMagnani · 17/05/2023 20:28

About 10 years ago. Not feeling a need for a new one.

It is a smart TV but doesn't have great apps except YouTube. Makes us watch less TV which I count as a good thing.

Jellykat · 17/05/2023 20:28

My DS1 bought mine (in the sitting room) for me christmas 2021, before that i had one that was 15 years old..

I only got rid of my tiny black and white one telly (from my bedroom) about 4 years ago, it still worked with a freeview box, loved it, but it was so small and my eyesight aint what it used to be!

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 17/05/2023 20:31

Beginning of this year after 12 years. Might be smart, have no idea.

Netflix, Prime, BBC, Disney+ etc all accessible with one button on the remote. Also the ability to cast and stream from other devices easily

Never buy a TV that's smarter than you, is my philosophy 😅The buggers'll be taking over if AI doesn't get there first.

User14528564 · 17/05/2023 20:33

Yours may last for a while yet. I’m watching the 2006 one in the caravan and it’s still going strong even though it’s put on the bed for transporting and is put up and put away a lot and has a generally hard life compared to one just sat in a house

frozendaisy · 17/05/2023 20:36

Go to a John Lewis oh my word some are beautiful...we unfortunately don't need a new one just yet

Redebs · 17/05/2023 20:37

I just realised that I have never bought myself a TV. Mine were given by friends. Haven't had a telly for a few years now.

HowToLearnToLoveMyself · 17/05/2023 20:39

Main tv 15 years ago
Eldests 3 year ago
Our room one from marketplace 6m ago as rarely used

AlltheFs · 17/05/2023 20:39

Our newest one is 1 year old, oldest is about 4. We had to change ours when we moved as the current one didn’t fit in new cottage sitting room.
We like tech, we just got rid of Sky and we stream TV and only watch in UHD. TV’s are cheap though these days, relatively speaking.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 17/05/2023 20:45

Our last one was bought 22 years ago. Stopped watching it about a year later. No idea if it works or not, as it basically became something to drape stuff over!

Typicalof · 17/05/2023 20:45

We use firetv stick with our 4yr old second hand TV. Ds1 accidentally hit our old TV screen and broke it. So we bought a second hand TV. I don't get TV insurance, since I buy second hand, it feels smarter to save the insurance money.

rainraingoawaay · 17/05/2023 20:50

One is 4 years old, one is 2 and one is a few months!

The newest one is super fancy all singing all dancing and I love it. Tempted to upgrade the 4 year old one too, the new features are just fab (one of those photo frame display ones plus all of the smart tv gadgets you could want).

Meredusoleil · 17/05/2023 20:51

Just bought a new one about a month ago! Not out if choice, but because we had to.

Old one lasted 13+ years and was not smart, so we used a firestick on it.

They have definitely gone down in price over the years, despite getting more high tech 👌

DazzleMaRazzle · 17/05/2023 20:56

Bought a new one two years ago to replace the twenty years old tank of a TV.

CatsOnTheChair · 17/05/2023 20:56

Probably a very similar aged TV here, but use DH's play station to access apps for Netflix and catch up TV.

SwedishEdith · 17/05/2023 21:02

Probably 8 or 9 years ago (usually in time for a World Cup). It's a smart TV but iplayer has stopped working on it. Sony no longer update the software or something. So built in obsolescence and need to use a fire stick for it now. Pain.

Soapyspuds · 17/05/2023 21:13

Maybe about 6 years ago.

Rather than buying a so called smart TV why not buy a Chromecast so you can cast Youtube, Iplayer etc to your TV?

TakeMeDancingNakedInTheRain · 17/05/2023 21:17

Got a new one a few months ago, the one before it was about 13 years old. The new TV is immense its huge and has everything a brand new telly should have, we were watching a kids film (one we've seen a million times) and omg the detail we could see, different textures that on our old telly just looked like block colour. We did have the other stuff on our old telly via linking the PlayStation up but everything is build in now and easy to navigate. I can't believe we had the old TV so long, just one of those things you just don't bother to replace as it works. The improvement in picture quality is incredible going from such an old telly.

CoodleMoodle · 17/05/2023 21:20

9 years ago. It's a Samsung. It's a smart TV but it's starting to get really slow, and some of the apps don't really work anymore. We've got a Firestick as well for Disney+.

thesnailandthewhale · 17/05/2023 21:24

At the start of the winter I bought 2 x 37" TVs from marketplace, one for my room, one for ds room. I figured it would be cheaper than heating downstairs. Both are smart TVs, roughly 2-3 years old, mine was £30, his was £25.
