When did you last buy a tv?

Mine is about 13 years old and I feel like I've been left in the dark ages as I haven't a clue about smart TVs, I don't stream, don't watch 'catch-up' tv or whatever. This is mainly a financial decision as I can't justify monthly payments for telly but actually if my current one broke down I'd be completely lost as to what to buy.

Anyone else?

Have I got the wrong end of the stick and actually it's worth having a more high tech tv? I haven't been bothered to look into it as, to me, it's a minefield and I've got enough on my brain.

How old is your tv?

I don't subscribe to anything but there's a fairly good choice of things to stream on the free/included in TV licence services.

I'm on my second TV in 14 years. Never spend more than £200 and refuse to buy a smart TV, I find most of the ones I've used are slow. I have a Firestick so I can access all of the streaming apps, flows nicely and quickly.

Potplant19 · 17/05/2023 21:37

Ours is about 20 years old and not smart but is fine. We use a Roku player but have just had to get a new one because the old one (maybe 6 years old), stopped supporting Disney+. I do find this planned obsolescence very frustrating..
We have Bose Sound touch speakers too which will now stop being compatible with BBC radio - they're only 6 years old. Very annoying!

purpleme12 · 17/05/2023 21:41

Just got a 32 inch. I say 'just' cos so many people get massive teles nowadays.
I'm not bothered about anything fancy

MaidOfSteel · 17/05/2023 21:46

I haven't bought a telly for at least 20 years. Various family members like to have up to date tellies so we get their cast offs, usually every few years.

Whatthetrolley · 17/05/2023 21:54

I've lived in my house 22 years, have only ever had 2 tvs, current one is 10 years old in the summer

Madcats · 17/05/2023 22:06

We have 2 TVs and our newest must be pre 2012. We have freesat and have a (Amazon prime) fire stick in the TV.s

It's all about your broadband speed

SugarAndSpike · 17/05/2023 22:07

I'm wondering if I've had a USB compatible tv therefore internet firestick compatible tv all this time without realising.
Would it go into any of these at the back my telly? (Excuse the dust... I don't venture back there often!!)

  1. It's not 'smart' but it's got a good picture and great sound. Ticks all my boxes. 😊

I’ve never owned a television. Other people’s TVs have been I my various homes over the years. When I lived alone I didn’t have one. We have a huge TV. OH & DS watch it, but I don’t.

mondaytosunday · 17/05/2023 22:39

18 months ago when we moved house. I rarely watch live TV - currently watching a series in Netflix.
It's great - so many great movies and series. We recently finished watching West Wing which is still brilliant. No problem with catching up on shows we've missed - no need to set to record or anything.
Plus during things like Wimbledon tennis, you can choose which matches you want to watch - not just the ones being broadcast.
And I can get the Internet on the TV too.
@MrsDanversGlidesAgain TVs are not sophisticated at all - they just allow you to access loads of entertainment!

DecommissionedVag · 17/05/2023 22:44

Come up to 8 years. It was a top end Samsung smart tv when I bought it. It can be a bit temperamental from time to time, so will be looking to buy a new one when I have the spare cash.

WotNoUserName · 17/05/2023 22:49

Ours is 5 years old. I got it off Tesco clearance eBay. Urgent purchase as the previous one just gave up and Doctor Who was starting at the weekend - my DCs were panicking they'd miss it!

I think it's smart. Not the smartest though. We have a firestick and watch online stuff. That's as smart as I want it. Don't care about any fancy stuff. I rarely watch it anyway.

justasoul · 17/05/2023 22:54

Our oldest one is about 13 years old - a Sony smart tv so out of date that when the apps stopped updating we bought a Roku and now that Roku has stopped updating too so we’re on the second one Grin

Newest one was bought for Christmas and even has a tiktok app Confused it has so many streaming channels that we didn’t even bother connecting it to the aerial, you can watch live tv on the apps.

OP, you can connect a Roku/alternative streaming stick to the hdmi port.

OxbridgeHopeful · 17/05/2023 22:58

22 yr old tv in our house too, with freeview box (replaced that at least once I think). Currently not plugged in though, I don't watch much and DH uses the computer in the study ...

macshoto · 17/05/2023 22:58

We still have an old Sony CRT from the mid 90s in one room. The other TVs are from the mid-2000's.

Most of the TV that we do watch is streamed onto iPads or on an iMac.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 17/05/2023 23:00

Mine is 2 years old. Samsung smart TV.
Smarter than me as I had to ask my son to set it up but I'm really happy with it

No - USB is different to HDMI.
HDMI effectively replaced SCART as the way you connect pictures and sound from DVD players, Sky boxes and the like, to the TV.
A good way of identifying a SmartTV would be the existence of a USB port (often for plugging a hard drive of media in, or for a fire stick).

TooOldForThisNonsense · 17/05/2023 23:04

We got it at Christmas 2019. Previous one we had got in 2008 but it had been switching itself on and off and it was getting annoyIng. Previous one was a Panasonic, current one a Phillips the Panasonic was better

SinnerBoy · 17/05/2023 23:05

July 2008, it was not long after we got married. We had a niece and nephew over from foreign climes and when they arrived, I went to show them how to use the DVD player.

The telly went pop, with a puff of smoke. I tried to have it repaired under guarantee, but the bloke said it would be cheaper to buy a new one.

I suppose it's "smart," we watch Netflix and Prime on it and the Switch is plugged in...

ThePlan · 17/05/2023 23:07

We bought a new one for our bedroom about a year ago. The others are all 3-6 years old. We seem to have every streaming service available. My partner says he’ll just try it for a month or just have it to watch a certain series but they never get cancelled. 🙄

Ambi · 17/05/2023 23:08

Black Friday deal Last year, 55" LG UHD OLED smart TV. The picture and sound quality is amazing. It looks smaller than our old 40" as the surround is tiny.

alexisccd · 17/05/2023 23:11

2010, run it with a fire stick so have all the apps etc. can't really get excited over a new tv and prefer to spend my money on holidays!

We and kids do have iPads / MacBook and can watch stuff on those.

I hate a tv in the room however so wd pay to have a drop down screen put in with a projector etc - mainly so it needn't be out all the time.

Ambi · 17/05/2023 23:11

I need a new one for the bedroom as some of the apps no longer work on the smart TV as the TV is from 2016, ITV is the latest app to become unavailable.
