Washing line spiders!

Margarita45 · 17/05/2023 10:41

Ok, so I have a rotary washing line (I call it a whirligig) and I swear the whole thing is attracting spiders and webs. I hate hanging my washing on it and the thought of little bugs on them gives me the heave.

Does anyone have any wonderful methods/tips for keeping them at bay?

It’s one of the reasons I don’t have a washin line! I have an airer that I put either in the spare room or when it’s sunny I can move it outside but bring it back in so it’s not left out there harvesting spiders 😂

Makingamess4212 · 17/05/2023 10:42

I add a little white vinegar to all my loads, not only is it an odor remover but spiders hate it! Not sure if it actually works or if it just gives me peace of mind 😕

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 17/05/2023 10:44

You do know we’ve all got millions of little bugs living on our skin all the time?!

Don’t worry about them - I even left my washing out last night! #spiderwillies

wildinthecountry · 17/05/2023 10:50

When spring comes around I give it a wipe before I use it ,maybe yours just needs a wipe more often .

reluctantbrit · 17/05/2023 10:51

Just wipe it down before you hang any up any washing.

I honestly don't know why people are so afraid of bugs potentially being on a washing line.

Mabelface · 17/05/2023 11:02

My friend uses a sweeping brush to get shot of them before she hangs washing out.

I don't either.

And in typical hilarious MN fashion, someone's aready mentioned leaving washing outside overnight and spider willies 🙄

Yeah. With irony.

Irony or not, it just isn't funny.

Oh that’s a shame. Was merely trying to bring some joy to your day. I hope you have a lovely one (no irony).

MarsDestroyerOfWorlds · 17/05/2023 12:34

@YellowAndGreenToBeSeen it made me smile. 🙂

Idrankyourbananamilk · 17/05/2023 12:36

@YellowAndGreenToBeSeen it made me snigger 😂

OP, I find our extendable line stays spider free in a way our old rotary didn’t. Do you have room for one of those?

bondsy · 17/05/2023 12:36

@YellowAndGreenToBeSeen I came here just for mentions of spider willys. You didn't disappoint.

ZacharinaQuack · 17/05/2023 12:40

Can you take it down and put it away between washes?

EversoDisorganised · 17/05/2023 12:44

Is it close to trees or shrubs? Ours is in the middle of the lawn and we don't get any of this but imagine we would if it was closer to plants.

Same!

Margarita45 · 17/05/2023 13:00

Thanks all.

It’s close to a single plant/shrub thing that for the life of me I cannot get rid of (no matter how many times I dig it out!) Otherwise pretty central.

Also, FYI I’m not scared of spiders being on the line. I just wouldn’t choose to have them in my clothes if there’s a safe way of avoiding it!

I probably could remove it between wages, but it’s have to fining he shed where I suspect I’d have the same problem. Not sure extendable would work as fence at other side it lower than the house.

My DH mumbled something about citrus last night and wiping with a citrus spray. I’ll give that a go too.

ZacharinaQuack · 17/05/2023 13:01

I reckon if it's folded up in the shed it'll be less attractive to spiders as a place to build webs

AnxiousShep · 17/05/2023 13:01

My neighbours have a cover for theirs. Could that work?

DrNo007 · 17/05/2023 13:03

Get a cover for it. Also keeps it clean.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 17/05/2023 13:16

@bondsy @Idrankyourbananamilk @StoatofDisarray @MarsDestroyerOfWorlds I mean, if you can’t come here for some old school LOLS, what is life?!

Am glad to have been of service <curtseys>

Sunnylassie · 17/05/2023 13:30

I have a cover for mine when not in use

Same.

@YellowAndGreenToBeSeen it seems you have been metaphorically "darked on".

Can’t dark on our spidey parade!

Floralnomad · 17/05/2023 14:18

Mines got a cover and I don’t find insects an issue .
