Is this enough food - and if not what else?

DH significant birthday this weekend and we're having 20 adults and 10 kids - in the garden from 1 (weather permitting):

2 x savoury tarts (large)
bread
potato salad
3 x large salads
olives
crackers
Grapes
cheese board
Houmous
crisps type things
Brownies
birthday cake
pizza for kids

Doesn't look much now I've written it down!

Any other ideas would be great.

I wouldn’t eat vegan food due to all the crap in it…

I don't think you know what vegan food is.

Vegetables
Salad
Pulses
Olives
Fruit
Nuts
Grains
Seeds

Vegan food, or even just 'food'

So 30 people have to be vegetarian because your DH is?

It's one meal. Lunch. Surely almost no-one eats meat every lunchtime anyway?

Tighginn · 17/05/2023 08:08

Nip to Costco and grab a few platters.

I'm not a massive eater but on a buffet I'd want some sausage rolls or meat or something. I could pretend otherwise but that's how I'd feel. I also feel the food choices of 30 people shouldn't be dictated by 1. If this was a vegan and everything was vegan everyone would have something to say.

Not everyone lives near a Costco. Our nearest is 3hrs drive away....

Kyse23 · 17/05/2023 08:31

It's one meal without meat
Does nobody ever eat a veg pizza for tea or a jacket potato with beans or an omelette or a feta salad? I often get to the end of the day and realise I've not eaten meat all day

Mrsjayy · 17/05/2023 08:35

It really is just one lunch I don't understand the need for a sausage roll the op is providing lots of food.

I assume the PP meant meat analogues. Tofurkey, mock duck/chicken/lamb, seitan, Quorn, tofu / soy / gluten based mimics etc. See also vegan cheese.

Personally I agree that they are frequently unpleasant in smell, taste and texture. Why bother? If you don't want to eat meat, why eat all the weird copies?

Most people would be perfectly happy to have actual non-fake-meat foods, but few meat eaters will be fooled by fake sausage rolls or fake cheese and onion pasties.

No one I know would have any negative reactions at all to a vegan lunch, if it was nice tasty food.

OK, fair enough, a vegan ‘cheese’ board would be given a swerve by many, but not a lovely spread of felafel, hummus, tasty pastries, good salads, samosas, Mediterranean and middle eastern type veg dishes etc / for example.

3luckystars · 17/05/2023 08:43

Just make about 10 pizzas. What you have listed is nowhere near enough. One person could eat a whole tart themselves and where would you be then.

Really a whole tart per person ?

Theelephantinthecastle · 17/05/2023 08:49

I don't think quiche/tarts are very different from pizzas fundamentally? Both are basically carbs with some toppings like vegetables/cheese etc

PinkFootstool · 17/05/2023 09:14

@Theelephantinthecastle I can eat a 13" Domino's pizza. Not sure I could eat a 13" quiche. Huge difference in the volume of carbs to protein ratio!

Blimey - of course not. I really wouldn't say not eating meat for 5 hours makes someone as vegetarian.

It's his birthday so we're having a vegetarian menu. And seriously it's 2023 - being vegetarian is hardly a new groundbreaking concept. FFS

Anyway, I'm leaving the thread now. Thank you for all great ideas.

Since you can't do meat (although I'd probably do meat for the other guests even if DH is veggie) I'd do extra pizzas for the adults, everything else is like a side dish.

But lots of people seem to be saying that the OP should provide pizzas because quiches are not enough - so presumably they are saying pizza is more filling?

PinkFootstool · 17/05/2023 09:43

No, pizza is more appetising! Quiche is a bit marmite.

Each to their own. I like both quiche and pizza but I think quiche is the better choice for a buffet because it's fine hot, cold or room temperature whereas I personally don't really like pizza which isn't hot

ObiWanKanobi · 17/05/2023 09:54

You need something a bit more substantial for the adults- chicken drumsticks and sausages?

ObiWanKanobi · 17/05/2023 09:57

Surely you can have some meat stuff? That will help bulk out the rest of the food you have.

Otherwise, you could make a pesto pasta salad and some veggie sausage rolls?

He's vegetarian and they don't want to serve meat so..

PhantomErik · 17/05/2023 10:30

Your new menu sounds great OP!

I'm laughing at all the 'where's the meat!!!' comments 😂

It's completely normal in my family / friendship group for a vegetarian to host a vegetarian party.

Hope your DH has a great birthday & you all enjoy the party.

Also if PP find vegan & vegetarian food horrible it's because you're cooking it wrong!

TenoringBehind · 17/05/2023 14:06

Lack of meat isn’t a problem but I think you need more food, and somehtung that isn’t cheese-based.

Mayrain · 24/05/2023 06:26

Just to thank all for input, food was amazing and plentiful (even if I do say so myself 😉) kids even ate it and didn’t bother with pizzas in the end (well except for my own when I couldn’t be bothered to make dinner.
