£4.60 for Tesco Finest Ham

How much are you willing to pay for decent -dare I say 'naice' ham?Supermarkets are taking the piss with weekly price increases.
£4.60 is for 250g of Wiltshire ham, so yes of course there's cheaper but didn't it used to that the offer was 2 for £3 and now it's 2 for £5?

I know. Its madness!

blanketsforall · 14/05/2023 22:10

Bake a small joint yourself - much cheaper and minimal effort

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 14/05/2023 22:12

Bake some yourself - bung in the oven for a couple of hours or do one in the slow cooker. You'll be sick of it by the end of the week as you'll have so much.

Yes-I buy a small joint and boil it. I think it's more that every time I do an online shop the prices have gone up on something. I can do certain things differently, cut back or batch cook more but when will this weekly price hike actually change? If you're still buying Lurpak, it's literally a luxury to me.

Freeze it sliced up in clingfilm

Crinkle77 · 14/05/2023 23:21

I've just looked online and it's £3.25 or 2 for £5. I wouldn't pay the full price but don't think £2.50 a pack is too bad for British pork and it is nice ham. Better the horrible slimy cheaper stuff.

Crinkle77 · 14/05/2023 23:24

Apologies it's £4.60 for the 250g pack. The one I saw was for the 125g pack.

Bathroomlove · 14/05/2023 23:38

I don't eat meat, but the vegetarian stuff has gone up loads too, as well as everything else. Hopefully it'll at least stabilise & a few things might go diwn a little 🤞🏼

GrazingSheep · 14/05/2023 23:39

Given that processed ham is classified as carcinogenic due to the nitrites it contains, Tesco are doing you a favour with their pricing.

Dungaree · 14/05/2023 23:39

It's too much for a packet of ham. There are some things you just have to pay more for like milk and bread but I've just changed what ham I buy. If we pay £4.60 they'll keep charging it. With everything getting more expensive each week a lot of people are just going to have to make changes to what they buy.

biscuiteer · 15/05/2023 21:40

You see I don't think we should have to put up with the increases. I think they are taking the piss. Just seen this BBC story about supermarket price increases being investigated.

Woman shopping in supermarket

Supermarkets investigated over food and fuel prices

The competition watchdog will look at whether a failure in competition means customers are overpaying.

In a similar note I just noticed the large tubs of Bisto are now £4 at Sainsbury's!! Cheaper on nectar prices but that’s extortionate

They were discussing this on LBC earlier. I just refuse to pay that much for ham, so I don't buy it anymore. I'll have something else (cheaper) in my sandwiches instead. I know the supermarkets probably don't care but my hope is that if people just stop buying these items then they'll have to review the prices.

Don’t then, but realistically your only other choices are don’t eat or cook everything from basic ingredients.

WesterChick · 15/05/2023 21:51

I've stopped buying ham at all, it used to be a staple in our fridge but there's 6 of us and prices have gone crazy. I must do the slow cooker ham though as it's much nicer and cheaper.

Re Bisto - I only use it to thicken / flavour an already decent beefy casserole or similar so own brand granules are a fraction of the price and exactly the same. I wouldn't use either as a pure gravy tbh.

Wait until you see the price of the small tub of glutenfree.

biscuiteer · 15/05/2023 22:01

I think they need to be named and shamed. £4 for Bisto which was £2.65 in January 1st in Sainsburys.
What else have you seen at a fucking ridiculous price that's clearly taking the piss?

Realistically don't eat or..? Well, first choice is not going to happen. Second choice -cheaper yes but I can't cook from scratch most of the time, as disabled.

AmberGer · 15/05/2023 22:14

Could it be an inflation before a special 'half price' offer? 🤔

Iwrote · 15/05/2023 22:20

Shit me, this thread reminded me I need Bisto, went to addnit to my Tesco basket.....£5.25. For Bisto!!!! I'll be trying a cheaper brand.

FarmersWife2019 · 15/05/2023 22:38

It would be one thing if the supermarkets passed on these profits to the pig farmers but they just don’t. It’s all supermarket profit.
Supermarkets dictate what they will pay pork producers the same way they dictate to the consumer what they will charge. They have too much control.
Supermarkets definitely wouldn’t care if we stopped buying these items as they sell low welfare EU pork which undercuts high welfare UK pork. They’re winning all the way.

BHRK · 15/05/2023 22:41

Cheese or cream cheese will be significantly cheaper (I know it’s not the same but…). I never buy ham unless it’s Parma ham. The regular stuff is full of nitrites, which are strongly linked to bowel cancer

MayBeeJuneSoon · 15/05/2023 22:46

People can't be paying these prices surely?

They must all end up in yellow sticker/reduced sections

@FarmersWife2019 , that’s why I buy only higher-welfare, U.K. raised pork or gammon, for which I go to M&S or Waitrose, rather than Asda, which is where I do most of my shopping. Asda in particular is awash with German or Dutch relatively cheap pork and gammon.
