Liverpool

I'm heading to Liverpool for the first time on a coach tour in a couple of weeks. It's 4 nights staying at the Adelphi (yep, I've read the reviews...!).

We have a day trip to Chester and free time in Liverpool to ourselves. One friend wants to do the ferry over the river, I'd like to do the Titanic museum. Is there anything that is an absolute must which we should see?

All advice welcome!

If you're staying at the Adelphi then visit China Town, it is a 5 minute walk. You're then open route to the Baltic Triangle which has loads of independent food stalls, cocktails and there is ghetto golf which is an absolute blast, this is mini golf with individually themed holes (dildos, Jeremy Kyle etc). Have a stroll down to the Albert Dock and take a walk around the Tate and the Maritime museum before you board the Ferry, the terminal isn't far at all. Rather than buying a ticket for the Ferry, you can get an all access solo card for buses and trains which includes the ferry. You're supposed to get off the other side and not do the full circle with a solo but they have no way of checking who got on where or how long you boarded etc so save yourselves twenty quid!
The open top bus boards at the Albert Dock too and does the tour around all the sites.
If you're looking for food, smoke and dough is our favorite, its eat all you want BBQ meats and breads (sides are extra!) and you can't move when you leave.
For tasty breckfast I suggest Sass Cafe or Moose Coffee although Moose usually has queues down the street!
You can do an underground tour of the tunnels under the city, not sure how to go about that one but everyone I have spoken to said it was amazing.
Enjoy!!

Western approaches (Liverpool war museum) is another one to add to the list.

If you're on the docks I recommend rough hand made for coffee and pastries. They do amazing croissants and cream cheese and blueberry pastries.

Can't you cancel the Adelphi and book premier inn or Travelodge or Ibis?

Stepbystep100 · 14/05/2023 15:16

Or use Host So Simple and rent and city centre air and b?

WhatAmIDoingWrong123 · 14/05/2023 15:25

The ferry is very short so it won’t take long. There is no Titanic museum, it’s the maritime museum with a focus on Titanic.

Just outside of the city centre is Sefton Park, in there you’ll find the Palm House (as showcased on Eurovision last night), very near to the park is Lark Lane and that’s great for food and drinks, get the 82 bus from Liverpool 1 Paradise Street (second stop from John Lewis on the Liverpool 1 side) and it’s a short ride through the city centre and Rocky Tocky before you get to Aigburth.

You can get on the train and go to Crosby beach to see Another Place, it’s 20 minutes. Get on at Central and go to Hall Rd, you want to turn right from the ticket office and head straight down Hall Rd to Burbo Bank, you’ll find the statues there.

I love Bold St at any time of day (food/some shops) and there’s usually good stuff going on at the Bombed Out Church at the top of Bold St.

The waterfront is lovely and I’d recommend Peaberrys at the docks for something to eat.

Hope you have a great time with us :-)

I suspect if OP has bought a coach package including the adelphi, then she's not wanting to splash out on alternative accommodation.

The adelphi is fine. Liverpool is a great place to be.

JulieHoney · 14/05/2023 15:44

Bundobust on (I think) Hope Street is fantastic for curry. Bold Street has loads of great places to eat and a fab independent book shop.

The museums are good, I’m fond of Tate Liverpool and they often have interesting exhibitions.

Rummikub · 14/05/2023 16:16

Bundobust is bold street last time I went. It’s veggie food, looks like a big no frills cafe but tasty. Bold Street has lots of independent eating places. Liverpool one has all the chains. Both decent atmospheres.

As pp mentioned the Williamson tunnels are a good trip. Only a short way from centre. Especially if you’re a a Dr Who fan as they used that as one of the locations in last series with John Bishop. The tunnels were built by Williamson aska the Mole of Edge Hill.

RunsLikeaLittleFatDuck · 14/05/2023 17:50

I wont add to the suggestions already mentioned as there are plenty, what I will recommend is keeping your eyes open as you walk around as there are art works all over the city streets.
Many, many murals and sculptures brighten up the city.

Toddlerteaplease · 15/05/2023 03:33

@GlitteryFarts Moose has finally introduced online booking! And there is now another branch, near the parish church. Still don't understand why they close at 5pm
Though!

Placemark!

Just reporting back!

The Adelphi was actually brilliant! Great food, the staff were lovely, the room was spotless. We had a problem trying to find the room because the place is so enormous but we had no complaints when we did find it.

We did the Philharmonic and ventured into the gents. Omg, the smell! Also did the yellow hop on, hop off bus, the Maritime Museum, the Tate, a boat trip from the docks, the shopping centre at the base of the radio city tower and an Irish bar. We had a day trip to Chester and did the Sick to Death museum (excellent!) and had a drink in Ye Olde Kings Head.

I'm definitely going back. There's so much I didn't get to see and I'm gutted about that. Liverpool is not at all what I expected and I wish I lived there! 100% recommend!

Would also recommend Speke Hall, bit of a way out but you can bus it from the centre. Not just a house, lovely grounds with a great view of the Mersey, take a picnic!

RoxyMuzak · 06/06/2023 09:08

I love Liverpool. I was on a bus once and said to the driver, 'Is this bus going to Speke?' and he said (you'll have to imagine the accent) 'If it does, it'll be a bloody miracle'.

Toddlerteaplease · 06/06/2023 11:16

I went to the sick to death museum in Chester and loved it. I was in Liverpool last Saturday and took my bike on the train to Ainsdale and cycled to Southport. The sun was shining and could see the Blackpool tower. Had a burger and an ice cream and cycled back. It was glorious.

Staying in Liverpool again this weekend. I can't wait!

WhatCameFirstTheChickenOrTheDickhead · 06/06/2023 11:26

I'm about an hour from Liverpool but haven't been since before COVID, we have a night away booked in a few weeks and this thread has made me so excited it's such a great city.

It's just taken an embarrassingly long time for the penny to drop. 🫣

That's hilarious!

I have to say how friendly everyone is, I'm in the South and no one talks to anyone, but wow, you have a friend everywhere in Liverpool. I'm very tempted to move, actually.

Have a fabulous time those of you going, I'm envious! And I love that photo and even more recommendations for my next visit - if I've not moved house first!

If it's open go up to top of the Anglican cathedral tower. The views are fantastic.

Don't know if you know, but it's traditional for all the stone to bé dressed by hand by the stonemasons. It's why it took so long to build, apart from WW2. At one time, I believe, it was the only place to apprentice stonemasons.

The organ, with 5 manuals and a pedal board, is, or used to be, the largest in the country. In the nave, you can see what looks like wood panelled cupboards. They're remote organ consoles. A verger showed me inside one when I was about 10, and fascinated by the organ.

I'm off to Liverpool next month for first time. Glad I stumbled across this thread for ideas

Have a fabulous time @carsarelife! I enjoyed myself so much that I've booked to go again next year.
