Liverpool

I'm heading to Liverpool for the first time on a coach tour in a couple of weeks. It's 4 nights staying at the Adelphi (yep, I've read the reviews...!).

We have a day trip to Chester and free time in Liverpool to ourselves. One friend wants to do the ferry over the river, I'd like to do the Titanic museum. Is there anything that is an absolute must which we should see?

All advice welcome!

Go in the crypt of the Metropolitan cathedral as well. Costs about £5 I think. And Moose for pancakes/ brunch.

ilovesooty · 14/05/2023 02:36

I stayed at the Adelphi for a night a couple of years ago. It was a bit shabby but not that awful. I lived.

Went to Liverpool for my birthday recently with 20 something DD. We were a bit meh about the Titanic Museum. Gender neutral toilets. DD wouldn't use them.

Weather was good and we enjoyed walking along the waterfront.

One evening, went to see a show at the Epstein Theatre and had a fabulous burger & chips and bottle of wine at the pub over the road. We had asked for a glass of wine each and the helpful bar person suggested we get a bottle instead as it's cheaper and we could take the bottle with to finish at the theatre 😁hic

Liverpool and it's people are fab - much friendlier and more down to earth than Manchester (where I'm from).

Fantastic city, great people (mostly). We only had a couple of days there, did the Hop on Hop off bus and the museums down by the docks. Wear decent shoes though, you can do a LOT of walking in Liverpool!

ClaireSweeneyStuntDouble · 14/05/2023 03:05

Wear your best bib and tucker. They don't slack on the style stakes in Liverpool.

SummerWhisper · 14/05/2023 06:52

Loads of good suggestions already but will add:

  • Bluecoat and Baltic Market for food / art / culture
  • Cains brewery for vintage stuff and food / drink
  • Woodside Ferry then its food market then Port Sunlight village
  • Woolton for Beatles (John Lennon's house, St Peter's Church where they met, Eleanor Rigby grave, Strawberry Fields which is also a cafe) or do the National Trust tour that starts in the Royal Albert Dock and you get to go inside John and Paul's childhood homes
  • Sefton Park's Palm House
  • Formby / Freshfields beach for the red squirrels (then Gormley's Another Place)
  • Heritage walking tours (2nd only to London for the most listed buildings)
  • City bus tour
  • Anfield stadium tour
  • Bongo's Bingo!!!!

You will have an amazing time. Report back!

I've never been to Liverpool although talking about going for years which is why I opened your thread.
But if your concerned about your hotel room door being opened you can buy locks for inside the door on Amazon to put on while your in the room. That might give you some reassurance.

EV4ME · 14/05/2023 07:00

Sadly the red squirrels succumbed to squirrel pox a few years ago. 😢 But the coastal woodland is gorgeous nonetheless.

Or stop a a bit sooner at Waterloo and walk down to the beach to see the statues. There's a fantastic Mexican restaurant on the same street as the station, as well.

StormShadow · 14/05/2023 08:51

Just fyi a lot of the museums close on Mondays, so if that's one of your 4 days then plan around it.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/05/2023 08:58

Last time I went, I spotted Liverpool cycle tours. (Bikes provided) So did one. It was really good. Though I had fortunately bought my own Ebike with me. As I didn't fancy the bill to the cathedrals. But bring a Helmet as no one else was wearing one and they didn't provide them.

notprincehamlet · 14/05/2023 09:12

The walking tour/silent disco looks like great fun (think it's organised by Silent Adventures). The glory days of the Adelphi are sadly long gone but it has an amazing history.

Zhx3 · 14/05/2023 09:23

Have a wander around the Georgian quarter, from one cathedral to the other, along Hope Street. Beautiful architecture. See if there's anything on at the Philharmonic that you'd like to watch!

A stroll along the water front with a stop at Albert Dock is spectacular.

Bold Street for an eclectic range of shops and eating places, with the bombed out church at the top.

I'd echo Port Sunlight as a stop, you cam do it in an hour or so on the train to Chester. There's a beautiful Flower Fairies exhibition at the Lady Lever Art Gallery at the moment.

For Chester, check whether it's a race day. Have a wander around the Roman Walls and I'd recommend the Cathedral, which also has a lovely cafe. Stroll along the river at The Groves.

StormShadow · 14/05/2023 09:42

Chester is brilliant.

OldTinHat · 14/05/2023 10:11

Wow, so much fabulous advice and suggestions, thank you.

I'll get an amazon door lock, unfortunately can't change hotel as it's part of the coach tour deal.

We're going Monday to Friday so noted about museums being shut, hopefully won't affect us.

I definitely want to make the most of the trip as its going to take about 8hrs to get there!

Will take best bib and tucker to the dry cleaners to make sure it's ready in time!

Thank you everyone for taking the time to reply, I really appreciate it.

Try Big bowl noodle if you like authentic Chinese food it's not far from the Philharmonic near the bombed out church Lerpwl at the Albert Dock if you like a posh meal .ye Cracke ,ye hole in yes wall, the Bridewell, the Ship and Mitrë, the lion tavern and the excelsior if you like old fashioned pubs . Matthew street always has beatles acts on .The museum by pier head has the best views over the 3 graces . If you go on the ferry you can see where they are building the new Everton stadium . You could check out what's on at the theatres they have some great musicals on . Enjoy !

Visited Liverpool for the first time over Easter holidays, what a brilliant city! Lively, friendly, great architecture. We rode the ferry (although it was freezing!), visited the British Music Experience and a few other museums along the docks. Loved Moose Coffee for brunch! Disappointed by Pattersons chicken though, despite the hype (they were literally OUT of chicken the day we visited...wtf)

Teen DS has been on a campaign to get us to move there. Lol! He's so bored in Norfolk (so am I...)

Work2live · 14/05/2023 11:22

Sadly Lerpwl has closed permanently @Soozikinzii - such a shame as it was fabulous!

Liverpool is my favourite city and fortunately I only live down the road. A few restaurants I can recommend are Maray, Hawksmoor (pricey), Bacaro for tapas, and Moose Coffee for breakfast.

Duke Street Market or Baltic Market are worth a visit if you like that sort of thing - I’d say Duke Street Market is a bit more polished, while Baltic Market is a bit more industrial, rough and ready but still some excellent food options. The Baltic triangle area is also great for wandering around and getting a drink.

I love the docks, Albert Dock is absolutely worth a walk around and again, lots of places to stop off for a drink, or an ice cream.

VillageFete · 14/05/2023 11:44

Liverpool is wonderful - the friendliest bunch of people you’ll find. Ask for directions, suggestions, help/advice and they’ll take you under their wing. I’m a Scouser, so biased, but honestly we do go out of our way for our tourists.

Fab suggestions so far and i’d echo the Baltic Market/Duke Street Market. Loads of great food choices and a brilliant vibe.

On Duke Street (close to the market) There’s a fabulous place for brunch and cocktails/mimosa’s. Highly recommend it - https://brunchandcocktailclub.com/

Go to Woolton Village - it’s lovely. You can catch the bus easily enough from the City Centre. It’s in South Liverpool and you have St Peter’s Church there and all of the Beatles connections. There’s a great little Cafe there called Coast that does fantastic cakes/afternoon tea etc…

The Albert Dock is a must, and if you like Mexican food there’s a great place there called Madre. Their cadillac nachos with buttermilk chicken are incredible, as are their baja fish tacos and margaritas.

Defo ferry cross the Mersey, just because.

Hope Street is really nice for food and drink, and maybe see what’s on one of the many Theatres that we have. There’s a great pub called The Blackburne not far from Hope Street that does a brilliant pre theatre menu. The food is fantastic.

Have a fabulous time!

If you’ve got a little door wedge take that for when you’re in the room, that’s a very old tip for travellers.

Incognito2023 · 14/05/2023 11:54

Only new suggestion is the Liver building and it’s tower tour - cheap and very worthwhile

pinkpinkeverywhere · 14/05/2023 12:04

I’d just add that you can do a tour under Liverpool One to see the old docks it’s built on. It’s free and only on a couple of days a week and you can book online. Doesn’t take long but they tell you all the history and explain the meanings of the fountains and markings outside Liverpool One. There’s a little viewing window above just outside Liverpool One and it’s under there that you visit. Hopefully it’s still going post-Covid.

I’m from Liverpool. I’d recommend the Albert Dock & all the museums along there. There’s quite a few all within walking distance.

The ferry is a nice experience (better on a sunny day) if not sunny then definitely take a coat.

Liverpool One & Church street for shopping (clothes) & some good restaurants in Liverpool One

Bold Street is good as well, which is on the way to the Cathedral if you plan on visiting there.

Definitely do St George’s Hall & if you have time there’s another museum by St George’s Hall that’s really good & they’re all free by the way.

There’s a Beatles museum (have to pay) & it is a bit pricey but if you love the Beatles then you will enjoy that. There’s also Bus Tours around Liverpool & one that takes you to all the Beatles childhood homes & places they grew up around.

You can visit the footy stadiums Anfield & Everton but they’re just outside of Liverpool City Centre.

Im sure I’ve missed so much more but me & my two children are always at the Albert Dock. Our favourite place it’s just got a feel to it that you can’t explain unless you’re there.

Hope you enjoy your stay here xx

bottleofbeer · 14/05/2023 13:20

You won't get Bongos tickets at this short notice. They're like gold dust when they go on sale, months in advance.

I'd forget all the stuff about places like Port Sunlight etc..nice but not strictly Liverpool and you've got limited time if it's Liverpool you want to see.

Nor do you have to stay in the Adelphi, if it's worrying you that much, cancel and book for one of the many, many other hotels/travelodges.

I wouldn't even make an itinerary. Wander around at leisure and you will find plenty to do.
