How do your kids listen to music?

Dc1 (10) has a digital radio, but she is also allowed her device in her room during daytime hours, so on a weekend she will watch and sing along to music videos on YouTube or play along on her keyboard.

Dc2 (8) doesn't have a music option in his room, however he is also someone who only seems to use his room for sleeping. Not like dc1 who hangs out in her room.

No music after bedtime anyways as it would keep the other sibling awake.

DD has like an anteroom where she does art etc. so it's easy for us. BTW we aren't posh, both rooms are tiny and in the attic!

SlipperyLizard · 12/05/2023 18:59

We don’t have a no devices in bedrooms rule, but we use Apple screen time/Google family to block access to all except certain apps (mainly audible, for story books) after bedtime until morning.

wheresmymojo · 12/05/2023 19:03

An Apple Alexa using the voice control to play from either Apple Music or Spotify

lunaloveroo · 12/05/2023 19:08

Dc has an echo dot (our old one when we upgraded).

Mone are quite small but we have a children's kindle fire thing that we pretty much only use for spotify and audible. They don't know how to use it really so I set it off for them and it has a passcode.

My children both have cd players and cds. Perhaps not the modern way of doing things but they like them!

stargirl1701 · 12/05/2023 19:34

Yoto radio and a YTO MYO card of favourite tracks.

Chuzzle · 12/05/2023 19:44

Radio. CDs. (at bedtime)
Spotify during the day.

Isthisexpected · 12/05/2023 19:48

Cd player

momentarybliss · 12/05/2023 19:48

Echo dot. They can listen to music or stories.

Dacadactyl · 12/05/2023 19:52

My DD 16 has a CD player with radio and she can have her phone in her room during the day (although she tends to be busy so doesn't go in her phone a lot in general)

DS 11 has no phone or any other device yet but will soon be getting one. He can have a CD player when he starts asking about music.

reelcat · 12/05/2023 20:54

Dab radio

BeyondMyWits · 12/05/2023 21:02

My kids (girls 18 months apart) just used their room to sleep in. They shared a room with bunk beds. They had phones in the daytime and a cd player in the room. But no music after 8pm as it disturbed everyone (small house).

Meredusoleil · 12/05/2023 21:04

Mine have Echo Shows.

Slaistery · 12/05/2023 21:06

Bedtime is for sleeping. We only have overnight no phones rule. Why do they need music when they’re sleeping? I’m very confused by this. They have pre phone cd players but don’t play them when going to sleep.

unlikelychump · 12/05/2023 21:23

MP3 players

Glooper · 12/05/2023 21:24

My ds likes to hang out in his room and listen to music. He uses Apple music but obviously it’s on his iPhone. I’d prefer him not to be on WhatsApp etc in his room. I find the app blocking thing doesn’t work all that well so maybe need a work around.

I'm having this issue. Both have a portable speaker so at the moment I expect them to set the phone to play something and use the speaker in their room. I then take their phones in when I go to bed because it has their alarm on it for the morning. I don't always remember so it's not ideal. And if DD wakes in the night, she wants to be able to put music on to get back to sleep.

You could use a little echo dot you just ask it to play x on Apple Music and the dots don't have screens

Apple Home Pod mini with Apple Music set to not allow parental advisory lyrics etc. works as an alarm etc too. And an intercom which is handy.

User124534687 · 12/05/2023 21:34

The only way I have found to get around this problem is for them to have a playlist on their phone, put ear pods in, press play, then leave phone on stairs (outside room) so it’s clear they’re just using it for music.
