Has anyone flown First Class?

I mean the really fancy looking ones with your own little 'room' like Emirates, Singapore etc...

Was it as amazing as it looks? I'd love to experience flying first class one day, but unless we win the lottery or something it'll probably never happen!

I don’t like the idea of being in a little room while stuck in a flying tube — my claustrophobia is bad enough without that.
Flown regular first class ( not long haul). The extra space and the fact that it was quiet was lovely. Attention from flight attendants was a bit over the top for me, but I’m not keen on being waited on.

Jamhamlamb · 12/05/2023 16:44

I fly virgin upper class regularly, I love it but its not quite Emirates private rooms

MarkWithaC · 12/05/2023 16:47

I've only ever attained the heady heights of Virgin Premium Economy Grin Our flight London to Hong Kong was overbooked, so they bumped us up from economy. I'm tall and long-legged and even having a little bit more leg room was good. That's all I'm bothered about, really; I don't need massages, a pillow menu or a limo from the airport. I wish they'd put a bit of that money into making economy just a little more roomy.

Yes, first class with Qatar, long haul flight (+16hrs) so definitely got our money's worth. Not a room as such but our seats were together (made a double bed once flat) and we had doors so we could close them and section our area off. Food was amazing and service 5 star!

Simonjt · 12/05/2023 17:01

Yes, I flew Singapore first class suite in early 2018, I didn’t pay for it! We had adjoining suites which when they’re on the same booking can be made into a double room with a double bed. It was fantastic, but I would never ever pay for it (not that I could pay for it anyway). The weirdest bit was being able to have a shower on the aeroplane.

We do sometimes fly business class, but only when we can get very good deals.

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 12/05/2023 17:09

Sadly not the fancy ones on Emirates, but have been lucky enough to fly first class a few times to LA and New York. What I really like about it (apart from all the space, obviously), is the crew address me by name and they're genuinely keen to make sure my trip is a good as possible.

Last time I flew was to New York. On the return, there was the most odious passenger who quite literally pushed me out of the way so he could board first. From what he said to me, this was the reason he felt entitled to push me out of his way, because his seat (1A) meant he should be first on the plane. He was vile to the crew as he walked on board, pushing one of the female crew out the way to get to his seat.

Anyway, the crew were horrified by him, I know something was spilt on him during the flight, and when he asked for a sleeping pad, he was told they didn't have any left. This was true, the crew gave me his so I actually had two sleeping pads to lie on. Had a lovely sleep as a result! The crew also bought me extra pudding too.

I had a contract job with Virgin Atlantic and had to go in upper class undercover ( couldn't reveal I was staff) for 'experience '

What a horrible day at work that was. Not.

Drowninginoptions · 12/05/2023 17:14

I've not flown Emirates etc. but have used BA first class trans-Atlantic a few times. It is great service and very comfortable. Unfortnately I really can't sleep properly in any moving vehicles so probably not worth paying for it. Luckily mine were all paid for me/concessionary tickets.

Bluesclues1 · 12/05/2023 17:21

Virgin Atlantic upper class is similar to business class for most airlines - lay flat bed but in a large cabin.

I used to be crew and would always request working in First Class. Less passengers who are surprisingly less demanding - they often eat in the lounge and then want to sleep.

I did get to fly first a few times when travelling and it’s lovely. Not sure if I’d pay £10k + for it but most people don’t - they use points.

ShyMaryEllen · 12/05/2023 17:25

I was upgraded to First from Business when I was flying with Emirates for work (I wasn't paying for any of it).

It was lovely, although I was asleep for a lot of it, as it was an overnight flight. The things I remember most are that there was a choice of champagne and that I was offered pyjamas 😂. To be honest, Emirates Business Class is so good that it 's not easy to think of what they could realistically improve between that and First.

TakeMe2Insanity · 12/05/2023 17:28

Flew first class on Oman Air, its a full on cubicle. It was good as DC comfortably sat with us and we (1 parent 1 child) had room and not squashed while the other had food etc. The airline was awful no gfml loaded no allergy info sheets just plating placement info. The only thing I could eat was caviar and theres a limit on how much you can have plain. I had gf emergency bread with me but they wouldn’t give me anything beyond the caviar!

We’d flown out economy with them and that was equally dire in terms of food.

TakeMe2Insanity · 12/05/2023 17:30

Just to add I much prefer Qatar business class. Any coeliacs randomly reading this the best business class gfml is on Finnair.

grosslyunfair · 12/05/2023 17:30

I was upgraded once on a very long haul flight. It was amazing- I loved the champagne and looked it up when I got home and it was £300 a bottle! The service and huge bed and sense of comfort was brilliant. I'd never ever pay for it, although as others say I might use points or fly bus8ness when I can get a deal

MouseTime · 12/05/2023 17:31

I've regularly flown BA first class long haul and Virgin Upper Class either with work or with complimentary upgrade vouchers from frequent flyer points. I'd never pay for it myself. It's good fun but business class is so good these days that I don't see the point unless you are super wealthy. I've never been in one of those cabin things though. They look very fancy.

I like the space and the quietness but have found the air stewards a bit much sometimes. On BA they crouch down to your level, shake your hand and make pleasant small talk. I know they have to do it and I appreciate that they do it well but just bugger off and leave me alone 😅. Im on to the hand shaking now and always have an excuse ready.

I've flown with my four kids when they were little on Virgin Upper class which was fun as we don't look like we would fly first and I'd get a few quizzical looks. My kids were always immaculately behaved when we flew so that made it easier, they knew the drill when we flew.
I've never flown short haul first class like a PP, is that even a thing. We fly club Europe with BA and other European carriers but never first class.

Unfortunately, I don't enjoy flying so it's wasted on me. I'm not scared of flying but I don't enjoy it. There are too many people and everywhere is too busy. I'd rather holiday in the UK.

ArnoldBee · 12/05/2023 17:51

I flew Raffles Class with Singapore Airlines when I was 15. I didn't pay for it as Grandma knew the pilot. It was funny going to economy then telling the hostess to give a message to the captain and her probably thinking another one pretending they know the captain. I have to say we were well attended and I went in the cockpit for take off! Bit concerning about the amount of water that comes through the windows and the amount of flannels in there.

That’s not first class, it’s business class.

Not quite the same but I have a colleague who bangs on about how she only flies first as “only the best will do” and I was quite impressed with how savvy she must be with points etc until it transpired she meant TUI premium economy 😂.

I’ve been upgraded to first from business twice, although both times BA so nothing like the Middle Eastern airlines! To be honest it was just like a “better” version of business with a smaller cabin and more personal service, plus marginally better food. I wouldn’t pay for first tbh but happily pay for business.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 12/05/2023 17:58

My family are BA staff and get upgraded regularly to first class. The unspoken rule is that you don't let anyone know you're staff, you turn up looking smart and refuse stuff like the free toiletry bags. Beyond that, the champagne flows freely and my mum refuses to go to the US now unless she knows she's got an upgrade pending😂

AtChoService · 12/05/2023 18:05

Yes, BA London to Jamaica. We got the very first row too 😁

Then when I next flew and went with easyjet, it was a bit of a shock.

gogogoji · 12/05/2023 18:08

Yes many times. Also many more times business abs as I am a small person and have to have a special meal (which is never as good) there is not a huge benefit for me flying first over business if it is a good airline. Qatar and Emirates business is really goods separated off space etc and very spacious for a small person like me.
I don't understand anyone saying 'oooo no, too claustrophobic'. There is nothing particularly claustrophobic about being in a separate unit. In fact as you have a lot more space around you, it is the opposite of claustrophobic.
I don't engage particularly with the crew. Im polite but I don't want a conversation and they are trained to understand that.
Getting proper bedding is nice. Proper mattress protector type thing to lie on and proper duvet type cover and full sized pillow. I don't drink so no benefit for me there. I just like being able to sleep privately

Careerdilemma · 12/05/2023 18:10

Quite a few times on BA. Although you don't get a suite. I enjoy the lie flat beds which they make up with Egyptian cotton sheets, and the pyjamas are nice. Lovely food and drink, great service. Nice to be in a smaller cabin and enjoy the peace. I mostly value it for the sleep!

inky1991 · 12/05/2023 18:12

There's a YouTube channel called Trek Trendy, who documents the experience of flying first class on all the top airlines. You really get to see what you get for your money - it's fascinating!

grass321 · 12/05/2023 18:13

I've flown BA first class a few times. The differential to business class is less now BA have changed the business class configurations.

Still wear the pyjamas (not terribly stylish, make me look like a middle aged yoga teacher). Quite a lot of slightly sycophantic but well-meaning name checking.

Was just us and another couple on one flight and I found out afterwards that the cabin crew had plied my son with a continuous stream of treats (discreetly, I'm always conscious of what my kids are doing so as not to disturb other passengers). Then as we got off, the air stewardess told me my son was "a complete gannet'. Hmmm.

From memory, might have had a different security lane at Heathrow than the usual business one but can't entirely remember. Also booked the free massages.

So nice (in the sale or using airmiles) but not extraordinary. I think BA may be slowly converting them to business as don't see first class offered on as many flights as five years ago.

Aworldofmyown · 12/05/2023 18:20

I have on BA, just once. The food was incredible. Was a fab experience.

eurochick · 12/05/2023 18:21

I've "only" flown normal BA First Class. I also found the attention a little too much but loved the space and the bedding.

HundredMilesAnHour · 12/05/2023 18:22

I've flown First with BA, Cathay, American and Emirates. And many years ago I flew on Concorde (so all First). Usually paid in full (by me) but occasionally I pay (or use points) to upgrade from Business into First. These days First is so expensive that it's just not worth it to me.

A (wealthy) friend flies First all the time (and by that I mean at least twice every month) but he lives in a different world to the rest of us. He's one of those people who gets met by airline staff at the door of the plane so he can be whisked through the airport, and he boards even before the people with babies/wheelchairs etc. It's quite embarrassing travelling with him.😂But the service he gets is incredible. Which is why he continues to fly certain airlines as they really look after him. I went to his birthday party in New York one year (see what I mean!) and it turned out we were on the same flight back to London. Except he was in First and I was in World Traveller Plus. And he took the St Regis New York's Bentley to the airport and I took an Uber. 😂I met him at JFK and as we walked towards the Concorde room, the lady on reception greeted him by name from quite a few metres away (he used to commute weekly London-NYC-London so knows almost everyone). He asked her if we could get me a better seat (😝) so she moved me to the first row of Club. As soon as we were in the air and the seatbelt sign went off, one of the crew from the First cabin appeared at my side and asked me to join my friend in First to drink champagne with him. We sat on the crew seats drinking champagne for most of the flight chatting with the crew in First. What a life eh?! Going First for him is like getting a bus for the rest of us mere mortals.
