Has anyone flown First Class?

I mean the really fancy looking ones with your own little 'room' like Emirates, Singapore etc...

Was it as amazing as it looks? I'd love to experience flying first class one day, but unless we win the lottery or something it'll probably never happen!

Yes, some years ago, with Emirates, JAL and Singapore Airlines. And yes, it was glorious 😁

JandalsAlways · 13/05/2023 12:43

Ooh me too! I don't think even if I could afford to splurge I'd waste my money, but it would be great if I won tickets! I even get excited with premium economy 🤣

I have. It was great!

We flew First with Emirates to Australia the Christmas after 9/11, because it was cheaper than business. On the Germany to Dubai leg we were the only people in the cabin. In those days there were no flat beds, just 'cradle seats' but we were very comfortable and had excellent service.

Since then we've been twice to Aus in business class (we have family there). It was totally worth it for the flat beds. I didn't get a perfect night's sleep, but being able to lie down was wonderful. Food was good too (not spectacular, but very nice).

I don’t believe you.

It sounds like you work for them!

Any business can have a bad day and my experience with them was bad it doesn’t mean it wasn’t true.

Houseplantmad · 13/05/2023 14:02

I've flown to Australia first class return. It was lovely - very comfortable and good service. The only downer was that there were some badly behaved children on the way out and that took the shine off somewhat.

No. I don’t work for them. But I am a Gold level frequent flyer with them and I know for a fact there’s plenty to eat on board. You could have had anything from the menu, they would even had taken from different meal options and put together a meal for you. End of.

gogogoji · 13/05/2023 19:30

@PollyThePixie are you suggesting that airlines don't ever make mistakes? I assure you they do. I travel frequently. Less now than pre Covid. I have on more than one occasion been on a flight where my precooked meal was not onboard. Not sure why this is such an impossible thing for you to believe. It happens.

You’re missing a major point I have coeliac disease I order a gluten free meal for a reason and no I can’t just order anything.

If a company tells you they have no allergy information let alone ingredients and the best information they can give you is placement information who would you believe the chief steward on your flight or a random on the internet with alleged gold status who can’t hear a word against them?

underneaththeash · 13/05/2023 20:31

We flew 1st once to Barbados as it was about the same price as business. Wine was amazing, but it was a little over attentive for me.

@PollyThePixie we had the same issue going recently in business, the Gf food forDS didn’t materialise and they had very little fir him to eat. Luckily he’s not coeliac.

Yes, you are right it happens...no airline can guarantee booked meals are going to make it - multiple reasons for it not happening ranging from screw ups in the catering department at the ordering stage to a last minute aircraft change.

That said a good crew with effort can usually rustle up something acceptable for the passenger(s) involved from the other catering that is on board, but it does become something of a challenge if the number of missing meals is well into double figures............... 😕

Yep this happened to my diabetic coeliac step dad when he was flying to Oz. His pre-booked meals didn't show up, if my mum hadn't packed emergency supplies he would have been in real trouble.

I also don't understand why this is so hard to believe. I'm vegetarian, always book my meals well in advance and it hasn't been available on a number of occasions. I always take some food with me just in case.

With regards to the actual topic of the thread, I've never flown first but will be flying business for the first time next year. I'm almost as excited about that as I am about the holiday!

I flew a lot with work. Over 6 hours intercontinental we were allowed business class, but often I got upgraded as was frequent flyer and single woman traveller. I must have flown first into South America , Asia, and Australia maybe a dozen times.

I was working, and not a drinker on flights as it really makes me feel shit, so the free alcohol wasn’t a stellar. The upgrade of food was nice to have, but still not worth the money you’d pay for it. The flat bed was good- but I can’t sleep well on flights anyway, changing time zones, hot flushing, noise and worst my nose blocking up which always happens on flights, meant in practice I wouldn’t get that much more sleep than in business class if any.

what I would pay for as single female traveller was privacy and staff treating me with respect.

I have spent too many flights trying to fend off man spreaders, people snoring next to me, just not feeling entirely safe going to sleep with a strange bloke 4 inches away next to me. I like in first that you can have space for your stuff to hand, meant I could even take crocheting 🤷🏼‍♀️🤣. Jus having in effect your own private space where you don’t have to crawl over somone when I needed the loo.
also. Found in first that if i went into loos and there was a mess on loo seat etc, the staff were way more helpful at cleaning the bathroom up for me really nicely- in fact they’d often stop me before I went in and nip in to clean down first- these are service gestures that make a differ nice as even in business class I’ve gone in after blokes and 🤢, and staff can either be too busy or irritated if you dare ask them to clean.

Ive been treated like shit by both flight crew and ground staff at times- particularly by US companies like UU, AA etc. they operate national flights like buses, and don’t know how to do intercontinental ime. Some really dreadful responses when I’ve had flight logistics issues due to frequent delays, when I’ve be n flying with special assistance ( I’ve had to travel with fractures or post operatives over the course of my career) etc. when you are first class, all staff treat you with respect, they stop, listen, try to resolve issues with patience and care. It’s not much to ask. There are some great staff in all airlines, but sadly there are some staff that behave like officious little pricks who are doing you a favour to fly with them. You simply do not get that on first class.

Airlines vary a lot and that can often surpass other factors, s I’d rather fly to Azusa in standard virgin ( not even business) than business class on UU or AA , it’s the way the staff treat you that makes that difference. Business class on some Asian airlines will outstrip business class on other airlines, again just based on service levels and attitude of the companies towards their customers. I’d specifically alter my schedule to try to use some f these companies than fly , say , BA . BA ar nt too bad ime, not as good as they were, bu no where near the sheer awfulness of US companies.

so to me service attitudes and privacy out weigh anything else by a long shot

Tell us you don't know what coeliac disease is without telling us you don't know what coeliac disease is.
Clue. 1:20 million. That's what is required to be certified GF. Less than 1:20 million. So no, taking bits of food from other meals that have been prepped in a gluten kitchen is not an option. But thanks y'all for giving us all a laugh at your 'I'm a gold card holder' wisdom.

Totally agree with you. If a salad is not marked GF, you don’t know that it has not been contaminated with a stray crumb from a stray crouton. As little as a single breadcrumb can set off a reaction. A worker in a non GF kitchen could have a stray crumb on their uniform. Even a piece of cheese could haven been cut with a knife that had laid on a surface where a cracker or bread had been.

Business class and loved it! Gorgeous proper meal, ate two desserts (😛) and drank a lot of wine. Slept comfortably (9 hr flight) and flight crew were superb. Would do that again!
Made me think: so this is how the other half lives! 😃
