Please help, can't pee

Bubbles254 · 11/05/2023 14:46

Waiting for an endoscopy, was told not to drink fluids after 10.30 today, did big wee when I left home at 12.00. On arrival at hospital told they can only do the proceedure if I provide a urine sample to test for pregnancy (no idea why I wasn't pre warned of this).

Anyway I have tried everything I can think of to get myself to pee, running water, bending forwards, bladder massage, exercise but still nothing. Any ideas what else might help? I will be so annoyed if they send me home becuase of this.

Run the water on to your hands? If the sink is close enough to the toilet that is. Or wet your hands a sit on the toilet with the water still running.

Yamaya · 11/05/2023 14:49

Or make a fist and push into your bladder as you rock backwards and forwards.

Nothing working, is it likely my bladder is completely empty if I have not drunk since 10.30?

Well yeah, you need to drink to be able to pee. So glass of water?

I am not allowed to drink before the endoscopy

Honestly, why don't they tell people this ahead of time and ask them to bring a sample.
I hope they won't cancel your procedure OP.
If your bladder is empty it can't be helped.

(My poor neighbour went for a similar procedure, she rang up the week before to enquire if she should stop her medication. She was told definitely not by a nurse, then when she turned up, the doctor told her off for not stopping and refused to do the procedure. She is 80 years old and really struggled to get there).

Bubbles254 · 11/05/2023 15:02

I know it is so infuriating. You would think this is a common problem if people have been told to stop liquids.

Unfortunately a pregnancy test is a legal requirement for all women over 12. They really should tell you before hand so you can come prepared.

JaneJeffer · 11/05/2023 15:05

If you're confident you're not pregnant and unable to test they should have a form you can sign excusing them from liability if you are.

I hope so, I will ask. It is pretty rubbish. At a private hospital, maybe they make extra money by charging the insurance company twice.

Ooo yes, I remember now when I had my tonsils out last year I signed a paper saying I didn't want the pregnancy test because I knew I couldn't be pregnant.

Daffodilsandtuplips · 11/05/2023 15:14

I’m remember as a little girl a nurse splashing cool water on my foof to help matters when asked for urine sample. It worked.

OnTheHamsterWheelOfDoom · 11/05/2023 15:16

I had this scenario once; didn't know I'd need to give a urine sample before surgery and I'd not been drinking as instructed. There was nothing in my bladder to produce.

Even after explaining to them in words of one syllable that I couldn't possibly be pregnant because I was in a same sex relationship, they still wanted the pregnancy test.

In the end they had me drink a glass of water and bumped me to the afternoon surgery list.

Rowthe · 11/05/2023 15:21

I think if you're stressed this can make it worse.

purplecorkheart · 11/05/2023 15:22

I found running the tap on a trickle rather than full flow works for me

Colourfingers2 · 11/05/2023 15:27

I’ve never been able to understand why Doctors and Hospitals are so obsessed with piss. I once went in for a bad earache and they asked for a urine sample.
I refused until they’d had a look down my earoles and it had nothing to do with my willly, my wee or my bladder. In fact you couldn’t have got much further away from them.
I know Acute Otitus Media when I get it.

Bubbles254 · 11/05/2023 15:36

Doctors seem to be really obsessed with pregnancy. When I was 21 I was in a car crash and admitted to hospital on a spinal board. The doctor who assessed me refused to x ray me becuase he considered there was a chance I might be pregnant (despite me assuring him otherwise). I was discharged but when leaving I noticed blood in my urine. They decided to give me a mri which showed up a burst fracture in my spine. I could have easily have been paralysed if I had left the hospital that day. I was immediately put in a back brace for the next 3 months.

I would drink water regardless of advice. I'm assuming it's to reduce risk of chocking on own vomit etc but your stomach is always full of acids etc anyway. I wouldn't eat, but I would drink even up to an hour before surgery.

Of course we're 'obsessed' with pregnancy tests. If you were pregnant and had sedation or a general anesthetic then you'd have a high risk of a miscarriage or god knows what would happen to the baby

Bubbles254 · 11/05/2023 16:01

It shouldn't be at the expense of the woman's health though. If she says she can't possibly be pregnant that should be good enough.

So, just to be clear, you're valuing the health of a hypothetical, possibly unwanted, embryo over the clear risks to the health of the woman laying in front of you?

Kyse23 · 11/05/2023 16:11

@IndiaPaleAle surely there's an in between though?
I've had it where I have said "I have a copper IUD, haven't had sex for 4 months, I'm currently on my period and i am categorically not pregnant, if by a miracle I was, I will not be continuing with the pregnancy"
They wanted a urine test. And then commented there was a large amount of blood in it. Yep because I couldn't use tampons because I was losing giant clots! (It wasn't that I went in for)

My friend was told she had to do one and and she's a lesbian

TheShellBeach · 11/05/2023 16:16

I was once asked for a urine sample when I had my period.

I did tell the nurse, but she insisted, then looked aghast at the specimen full of blood.

She then threw it away. I mean FFS have they no sense?

Doyouthinktheyknow · 11/05/2023 16:46

It’s ridiculous that they expect a urine sample after asking you to be nil by mouth!

Running water normally works but if your bladder is empty, it’s not going to work!

i’ve no womb, I’m now wondering if they would take my word for that or would have to consult my notes to confirm I’m not pregnant🤷‍♀️ The surgery was 17 years ago, probably need some research to find it!
