Please help, can't pee

Bubbles254 · 11/05/2023 14:46

Waiting for an endoscopy, was told not to drink fluids after 10.30 today, did big wee when I left home at 12.00. On arrival at hospital told they can only do the proceedure if I provide a urine sample to test for pregnancy (no idea why I wasn't pre warned of this).

Anyway I have tried everything I can think of to get myself to pee, running water, bending forwards, bladder massage, exercise but still nothing. Any ideas what else might help? I will be so annoyed if they send me home becuase of this.

So, just to be clear, you're valuing the health of a hypothetical, possibly unwanted, embryo over the clear risks to the health of the woman laying in front of you?

Nope ,.problem is people lie.
And ladies who for whatever reason do not want to admit they have been sexually active also lie.

The abdominal xrays with foetuses show this.

It's a given . Pregnancy needs to be ruled out, and despite a pregnancy being unwanted feeling may change once the baby arrives and if any harm had been done there really isnt any excuse, especially with current guidance around xrays for women.

Hang on a minute, yesterday you were a housing solicitor and today you're a medical professional?

@IndiaPaleAle surely there's an in between though?
I've had it where I have said "I have a copper IUD, haven't had sex for 4 months, I'm currently on my period and i am categorically not pregnant, if by a miracle I was, I will not be continuing with the pregnancy"
They wanted a urine test. And then commented there was a large amount of blood in it. Yep because I couldn't use tampons because I was losing giant clots! (It wasn't that I went in for)

My friend was told she had to do one and and she's a lesbian

Being a lesbian doesnt stop you from being pregnant. And I'm not saying this is true of your friend but if she was having an affair with a man, she would never admit to their being a chance she could be pregnant.

And yes we do get positive pregnancy tests from ladies who say there is no way they could be pregnant.

Have you ever considered that it's quite offensive to be told you're going to be denied essential medical care in case you're lying or cheating?

Thankfully, we live in a country where pregnancies need not arrive at all. If you induced a miscarriage in me I'd think you'd done me a favour - and I'd be happy to sign paperwork to that effect.

Did you miss the bit where a previous poster said she was almost paralysed because the doctor insisted on a pregnancy test?

If my surgery had been delayed due to being unable to give a sample, I'd have lost the kidney altogether (it was very much borderline by the time my surgery date finally came up anyway). The health of a hypothetical baby does not trump the health of the very real woman in front of you.

Before you suggest that the foetus could go to term and be damaged by the woman's choice not to disclose her pregnancy - it's entirely legal for a woman to smoke and drink throughout her pregnancy despite the well documented health risks from those recreational activities.

Women are more than incubators for foetuses.

My health board didn't ask for a pregnancy test when I had my endoscopy with sedation 2 years ago. DD is going for one next Wednesday. Its not been mentioned at all in the booking process or the forms we have received. How odd. I guess I had better get her to do a sample just in case

Bubbles254 · 11/05/2023 17:32

Had the endoscopy without the test, they did take my word for it in the end, I think me offering to produce my bloody tampon for examination was quite persuasive and I didn't even have to sign anything.

I'm not saying women are incubators, but there is obvious guidance laid out, for certain procedures and regardless of how you are saying you would feel, people do turn round and sue.

And you seem to be putting a lot of words in my mouth about what I've actually said.

I'm explaining the protocol behind why they would want a urine sample from females of childbearing age, regardless of their personal situation.

I didnt say it was justified to refuse medical intervention to put the health of a foetus above a woman, just explain why it is done the way it is done.

Spidey66 · 11/05/2023 18:36

I've had a number of health issues in the last couple of years needing GAs etc and haven't been asked to do a sample. They've taken my word that as I've had a hysterectomy there's no chance of pregnancy. That and the fact I'm mid 50s. But they've all been in the same hospital so they have the evidence in their notes.

musicalfrog · 11/05/2023 20:34

When I had roaccutane many years ago I had to promise not to get pregnant for the duration. Thank goodness my doctor trusted me because that stuff would seriously damage an unborn child. Ridiculous to insist on a test before offering healthcare.

wildfirewonder · 11/05/2023 20:38

Bubbles254 · 11/05/2023 16:01

It shouldn't be at the expense of the woman's health though. If she says she can't possibly be pregnant that should be good enough.

I don't think this would be adequate, really. People are knobs!

IntheSnowySnowyMountains · 11/05/2023 23:41

Good grief. How ridiculous. I hope you got to have the procedure.

I live abroad (Europe) and have had 6 surgeries under GA and 2 under spinal, plus more x-rays and MRIs than I can count and not once have I been asked to do a pregnancy test. Because I signed a form saying I wasn't pregnant and the HCPs trust me.

SqueakyDinosaur · 12/05/2023 00:12

I see a LOT of hospitals (lots of different stuff going on). Most of them are sensible but occasionally you get one where the processes are just mad:

Them: Is there any possibility you could be pregnant?
Me: No
Them: We'll need a test to confirm that.
Me: I'm 57. 3 years ago I had a radical hysterectomy. It's in my records.
Them: We'll still need a test.
