Has anyone used a shopping trolley on the beach?

Those 4 wheeled foldable beach trolleys are a bit pricey and take up a lot of space in my tiny boot. I've also seen people get stuck on the dunes and have to carry them which requires two people.

Has anyone tried using a normal 2 wheel shopping trolley to haul their stuff down to the beach? How did they perform on sand?

Oh and to preempt the usual mumsnet responses to beach questions, no we can't carry less stuff and no we don't have the kitchen sink with us! 😂We have a lot of kids in our party and tend to stay all day so we need sandwiches and drinks as well as the usual towels and suncream. It gets heavy carrying it all in beach bags as it's quite a long trek.

I only clicked because I thought you meant the type you use in the supermarket and was thinking WTF?

We use the big blue ikea bags - they hold tons but are easy to carry with the long shoulder straps.

PinkFootstool · 10/05/2023 14:31

My Dad always used to take a big hiking rucksack to carry it all. A small gas camping stove, small frying pan, half a loaf of bread, two packets of cheap sausages, bottle ketchup and drinks. That was us for set the day!

I've used those box trolleys as above and they are pretty crap and easily broken. Look for something with bigger wheels.

We used granny shopping trolleys through the mud of festivals for years, including the infamous Drownload. They held up well. This sort of thing - but I'm sure I paid about £10 in a cheapo shop:

We tried IKEA bags last year and got horrible bruises on our shoulders from the straps! It's really quite a long walk from the car park that's the trouble.

You need big, fat wheels for sand.

Sorry folks, I didn't want to use the term granny trolley in case it upset anyone who uses one!

I'd love a boot big enough to fit a Tesco trolley in though!

Hahaha - they're are some trendy numbers for today's Grannies.

A golf cart might work if you can find anyone with an old one.

I would always pack everyones stuff individually. So each kid had a backpack with their towel, their food, drinks etc. I carried my stuff plus the cold food stuff.

Yvetty · 10/05/2023 14:44

we take a ‘granny’ trolley to the beach. End up carrying it along the sand with 2 people - one person holds the handle and then there’s a bit at the bottom frame that the other person holds on to, so it works out ok.

Yvetty · 10/05/2023 14:45

the kids also carry their own towels in bags too.

Summerfun54321 · 10/05/2023 14:57

Anything with small wheels is shit on sand. You basically have to have wheels the size of a children's bike to work.

PinkFootstool · 10/05/2023 15:05

@AnotherOneGone that's a hell of a price - we always wanted them for festivals and they were at least £150!

Severalus · 10/05/2023 15:08

I've seen people get stuck with those 4 wheelers on the sand dune path down to the beach. I think they're good for wet sand but dig in too much on soft stuff.

Yes. We used one when the kids were younger and couldn't help carry everything. Worked fine on the sand.

ASGIRC · 10/05/2023 15:15

I swear by my 4 wheel granny trolley (it basically takes all the weight, like a 4 wheel suitcase), but I dont think it would fare well int he sand. While, because it has 4 wheels, it is steadier, and 2 of the wheels are bigger, I dont think theyd cope well on dry sand and would probably get stuck.

CoronationKicking · 10/05/2023 15:32

Sounds like Bamburgh, you wouldn't want to try any trolley down there.

FluffyTrousers · 10/05/2023 15:33

I always used a 2 wheel shopping trolley to transport stacks of stuff to the beach. We used to have a long walk from the car park along a made up track, then across the sand. The Sandy bit was hard work but achievable. I also had a backpack and the boys carried their body boards.

We had one of those trolleys that's like a folding plastic crate. Held enough for us with a supermarket bag in top. But useless on the sand - however we really wanted it for the walk to and from the beach (including a cliff path) rather than wheeling it miles across the sand. Once on tje beach we'd just carry it.

This. We had these for blankets, pop up tents, mats etc and then lunches in backpacks. They are ok on the beach if used for the bulky light stuff, and before you get to the sand you can have all the other bags strapped on top. They are also fun for DC to pull for part of the way.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/05/2023 15:44

Rucksacks are better for cliff paths or dunes imo. And of course kids should carry what they can.
