Has anyone used a shopping trolley on the beach?

Those 4 wheeled foldable beach trolleys are a bit pricey and take up a lot of space in my tiny boot. I've also seen people get stuck on the dunes and have to carry them which requires two people.

Has anyone tried using a normal 2 wheel shopping trolley to haul their stuff down to the beach? How did they perform on sand?

Oh and to preempt the usual mumsnet responses to beach questions, no we can't carry less stuff and no we don't have the kitchen sink with us! 😂We have a lot of kids in our party and tend to stay all day so we need sandwiches and drinks as well as the usual towels and suncream. It gets heavy carrying it all in beach bags as it's quite a long trek.

They won't work on sand

tikkanaan · 10/05/2023 13:47

What sort of sand? Wet or dry?

CoronationKicking · 10/05/2023 13:47

You'll look like right scruffs sitting next to your stolen Tesco trolley on the beach. Some people have no shame.

What about something sledge like?
Could you have something made?

tikkanaan · 10/05/2023 13:50

Or a bodyboard

Lmao. How many Tesco trollies do you know that have 2 wheels? She means the “granny” type trollies that’s a bag on wheels.

AliceMcK · 10/05/2023 13:51

I’d imagine it would be far easier 2 people lifting a 2 wheeled shopping trolley across the sand than the 4 wheel ones. It would just be like 2 people lifting a pram. I remember as a child helping both my mum and Nan carry their shopping trolleys upstairs without any great hassle.

CindersAgain · 10/05/2023 13:53

I’d be inclined to use bigger bags. Those checked laundry ones for example.

Severalus · 10/05/2023 13:54

Sledge is a good idea. I had thought a shopping trolley would pack down smaller as you can get models that are foldable but I suppose its the same as a sledge in terms of boot space. We never have enough space for stuff on holiday so I'm always looking for compact options.

Initially I thought tesco trolley too.

But I wouldn't think a granny trolley would work on sand, I also think it would be a nightmare to get sand back out of.

HerMammy · 10/05/2023 13:59

Sledge is the way to go, my DDs use them at festivals as often their camp site is a trek from carpark.
Get some bungee cords to strap stuff down.

FasterthanBolt · 10/05/2023 14:01

We live a 10 minute walk from the beach and always used a two wheel shopping trolley for the beach, although ours is shingle. It was brilliant, held everything we needed for a day out and wasn't heavy!

Bimbom · 10/05/2023 14:01

Yes we often take one

Stand down @PurelyBelter, pretty sure Coronationkicking was joking Wink

Or maybe not Grin

Needmorelego · 10/05/2023 14:06

I have in the past. It can be a bit bumpy.
The fold down style ones tend to have weak wheels so they wouldn't be a good - but a regular one is fine.
My current trolley died recently and I have been eyeing up the ones that have a flip down seat - spare seat for the beach 🤔

I actually thought she meant a Tesco trolley 🤣

Did wonder how she was getting it in the boot

I don't think they're called Granny Trollies anymore. They've gone all hip/trendy and are now Festival Trollies. Glasto, Reading etc are awash with them. 😂

Severalus · 10/05/2023 14:12

Sorry folks, I didn't want to use the term granny trolley in case it upset anyone who uses one!

I'd love a boot big enough to fit a Tesco trolley in though!

Ha! I was imagining a wire trolley until I read your OP.

Wheels and sand are a bad combo, but a 3 wheel off road buggy is way better than a small wheeled maclaren style one. I think the Amazon trolley posted above is a good shout if there are no steps.

We just use those enormous supermarket bags or have everyone take a rucksack.

That's a really fair point re grannies.

starfishmummy · 10/05/2023 14:20

We had one of those trolleys that's like a folding plastic crate. Held enough for us with a supermarket bag in top. But useless on the sand - however we really wanted it for the walk to and from the beach (including a cliff path) rather than wheeling it miles across the sand. Once on tje beach we'd just carry it.
