One of my ' love life ' things is as above , it makes me feel all is good in the world . Another is listening to heavy rain against the windows knowing we are all safe & cosy at home.
What's yours ?

That sigh kids do after they've been asleep for a while, I think it's a 'going into a deeper evel of sleep' sigh, but I love it.

The sound of my chickens preening their feathers, all calmly sorting out their quills and oiling their vanes.

Children playing out in the playground at school

The smell of skin that has been in the sun, I love tucking in my kids to bed when they've been playing in the sun, I snuffle them.

Owls
and bats!

MrsAvocet · 10/05/2023 00:11

I love the noises when we sleep on our boat, whether it is the slap of the water or the clanking of the shrouds in the wind, sounds of nearby wildlife or any of the other random creaking and clunking noises that a boat makes. Unfortunately DH hates many of the noises and insists on fastening as many potentially noise making things down as much as possible and then worrying excessively about any noise he can't silence, or worse still, can't identify. It's odd, because I am normally the worrier in the relationship and DH is pretty laid back, but on the boat I take the attitude that it makes all these noises every night we are not there and hasn't sunk yet so there's no particular reason it should do so whilst we are onboard and I find the noises quite soothing but DH imagines disaster with every creak! We are agreed however that there is no better sight, sound or smell than bacon sizzling first thing in the morning after a night afloat, when the sun is just coming up and the world is still asleep, bar us and the birds.

I love to hear the sound of the train in the quiet evening.
Love hearing heavy rain while I'm curled up in bed on my electric blanket.
Loved those huge storms we had a couple of years, ago where the lightening just went on forever.
We're a couple of miles away from salt marshes. And every year we get 2 oystercatchers that come inland to mate. Who knew they were so active at night? Flying around squawking through the early hours. I absolutely love listening to them and feel quite possessive of them now.

Tintackedsea · 10/05/2023 00:22

Corncrakes at night
The sea smashing or shushing on the shore
The last vestiges of light as the sun drops below the horizon
Basil/mint/rosemary/thyme rubbed as I garden
Bees on the borage
The silky fur on the dog's ears
A patch of light to swim into
The dip of a soldier into the perfect yolk
The tomato reek in July
The rough stiffness of a new towel
A mummeration of starlings
Sunshine dried sheets on the bed

I hate most of these! Owl hoots are creepy, wood pigeons irritating repetitive feckers, hearing the foghorn or other people's wind chimes means it's woken me up and I can't make it stop, and hearing the dawn chorus means I'm still bloody awake. The only noise I can tolerate at night is my family making cute sleeping noises. Sorry OP, think I need some sleep.

Chatillon · 10/05/2023 05:10

Swallows chattering. They make different sounds during the course of the summer. We have some that rebuild nests around us each year. When the first brood are ready the chicks will land on the window ledge and with the double windows open all night that’s where they will come shortly after first light. The window faces east so they get the first sun to warm their faces.

Then unless you were here to hear it you would not believe it. Like a language lesson in a kindergarten the parents teach the chicks to chatter. One parent will perform a string of chatter and the chicks will try to copy it. Over a few weeks the strings get longer, more sophisticated until the young swallows are word perfect. Like babies that bangle eventually they master the language. All this goes on just eight feet from my pillow.

it’s amazing to hear when it’s raining and the scent of the honeysuckle wafts through.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 10/05/2023 05:23

I've been awake for a while listening to the dawn chorus, and drinking tea. Life doesn't get better 😁

I also love the sound of rain when I'm cosy in bed, far off trains, the smell of geraniums on a hot sunny day, and the sound of thunder rumbling away.

WildRosie · 10/05/2023 08:13

The sound of carrion crows triple-squawking at 5 a.m. in the spring and summer. It means another night shift is over!

garlicandsapphires · 10/05/2023 08:30

This is a lovely thread. Owls hooting softly is my favourite thing in the world. Also rain on velux. And of course birdsong at this time of year.

Summerwhereareyou · 10/05/2023 08:52

Wonderful, agree owl or cuckoo sounds are magical

PurpleChrayne · 10/05/2023 08:57

This thread is so beautifully evocative!

ArbitraryHaddock · 10/05/2023 09:21

What a lovely thread! Just reading the words has calmed me. I nominate this thread for classics. Thanks for starting it, OP. Oh, and I agree with all your lovely sounds.

Butteredtoast55 · 09/05/2023 22:46

Haar is the sea fog or sea fret that comes rolling in from the ocean. Eerily beautiful.

Jim lad!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/05/2023 09:31

This isn’t a sound.

But yesterday l saw a lamb asleep on his mum’s back. It was both heartbreaking and wonderful at the same time.

Tratjymp · 10/05/2023 09:32

hearing the foghorn or other people's wind

Can't always tell which it is.

WarningToTheCurious · 10/05/2023 09:34

Green woodpeckers.

SunnyEgg · 10/05/2023 09:41

Waves crashing on a beach
birds in the garden
One from school days - cars going past at night on the rain
One from childhood - children laughing in another room
children singing together
Rain and wind when inside

I haven’t heard an owl for a while but definitely up there

longtompot · 10/05/2023 10:05

Lovely thread. Just reading whilst Nick Drakes The Cello Song is playing on the radio, perfect accompaniment 😊

We too get owls and I love their calls. I love the sound of rain when in bed at night.

Iloveabaconbutty · 10/05/2023 14:18

Three scenarios come to mind...

Watching the sunrise over the sea at dawn on a May morning and then walking back home for a cup of tea with the birdsong all around me. No cars on the streets, no-one around, windows still curtained. Peace, tranquillity and stillness.

At night time in bed hearing the constant whispering, murmuring hum of the waves running up the beach nearby as I drift off to sleep...

The sound of rain on the tent as I snuggle down more deeply in my sleeping bag with the promise of a bright sunny day tomorrow.

NowZeusHasLainWithLeda · 10/05/2023 14:21

Lovely thread
Will add a smell, not a sound. The smell of night, in spring. Nothing scented, nothing "weathery" just when you step outside (in my case usually to rather unpoetically put the bins out 🤣) and there's a smell that's different. (not the bins!) Warmish air. Velvety. Hint of nicer days to come.

PimpMyFridge · 10/05/2023 14:23

The smell of cut grass. Reminds me of those days in childhood summers that felt like they'd never end.

YouNeverSeeTheRealMe · 10/05/2023 14:31

We have 2 owls that sit in the trees at the bottom of our garden. Last week, we saw a Sparrowhawk - unfortunately, it had a blackbird in its talons. Still, nature is great

knittingaddict · 10/05/2023 14:36

Mine is the same as yours op. No idea why, but when I here an owl at night it's instantly calming and lovely. We live next to countryside and it's a fairly regular thing and happened a night or two ago.

knittingaddict · 10/05/2023 14:39

Also the sound of trains in the night. One of my grandparents lived near a railway track and I would hear them going past when I was in bed and staying with them. I wouldn't say no to buying near a train line, although I suspect it is busier now than it was in the 60's and 70's and I would actually hate it.
