How important are year 2 sats?

In all honesty, I’m not even sure what they’re for.
Is it to assess what level they’ll be working at in year 3?

My eldest didn’t do them as they were cancelled due to covid so this is my first experience of them.
I guess my underlying question is, how much should I be preparing DD for them?

The point is to create something to compare Yr6 SATs to.

They aren't important at all.

My elder one didn't sit them as she was below minimum level, younger DD was Yr2 in 2020. It hasn't affected them at all.

Bobbinsbirthday · 09/05/2023 21:09

SATs are important. They are tremendously informative: using such prior assessment data, GCSE grades in individual subjects are accurately calculated when a child is eleven.

Feckadoodledoo · 09/05/2023 21:24

Unfortunately they are wrongly important and unfortunately do determine high school class sets due to their use in GCSE predictions as per above post

You do not need to prepare your child for Year 2 SATS, hopefully the school will not be even mentioning them really they just get to do a special booklet, sometimes in the classroom, sometimes taken out in small groups.
There are only booklets for maths and reading comprehension. The other things are assessed during the year.
Do not panic at all, the level they are is what they are, it will show whether they need more support in Year 3 which the school should already know and is mostly for ofsted and the LA to judge whether the school is performing well or not.
This is the last year of year 2 SATS.

Mmm not really? Especially Year 2 ones.

GG1986 · 09/05/2023 21:26

Sats are important for year 6 but not year 2, the year 2 sats are more to see if the teachers are teaching properly apparently. My 7 year old has them next week and we haven't told her anything about them.

Is this a joke?

Year 2 SATS don't, thats Year 6 SATS

My school did a wonderful job with Yr 2 Sats, made it into a big game that they were all going to be spies, such a good idea and none of them were stressed about it as they all wanted to do the spy games.

Asked us parents not to talk about Sats or exams, just refer to it by its spy name...
Really good. (We are an Outstanding school, for reference.)

In any case, I always thought it was an assessment of the teaching rather than the children specifically?

Don’t be naive.

SAT- Standardised Assessment Test(tasks) - another import from the USA. Used to assess Value Added, that is what a child has learned from the preceding years. Of course there has to be a base line - hence the tests in Y2. For the child they're of little significance. Y7 on the other hand at the end of KS3 are used to loosely predict GCSE grades and possible setting oportunities

Tallulasdancingshoes · 09/05/2023 21:41

They’re not very important really. And the final assessment isn’t based solely on the tests scores. Teacher assessment from throughout the year also plays a big part too.

This is what our local schools are doing. Mine are not in yr2 yet but I thought it was bloody wonderful. Such a refreshing change and the kids love their secret missions that they can't tell anyone apart from their parents about. Me and their dad have loved hearing about this! The kids will be great when they get into year 2!

Oh and mine have been asking to complete extra tasks with homework so they are ready for the secret tasks next year 🤣🤣

Heckythump1 · 15/05/2023 09:15

Mine is in Y2 too, they're doing Sats this week... she's not phased and is excited because they've mixed the the two year 2 classes up for the week and she's in the other class. Plus they're doing fun stuff in the afternoons!
I'm wondering why they've mixed the classes up to do them though? One her friends was really upset this morning because she doesn't want to go in the other class. :(

SnacksToTheMax · 15/05/2023 09:37

Our school didn’t even tell parents they were happening - they were extremely chilled about the whole thing and went out of their way to keep the kids calm about it all. The first I knew of it was my daughter telling me one day that she’d done some quizzes and been rewarded with a biscuit 🤣

ChickenBurgers · 15/05/2023 09:42

My eldest did them last year, he wasn’t even aware he was doing them they put such little emphasis on it. I know he did do them as we all got their results at the end of the year (not exactly what they got, but whether they are working at expectations, above expectations or working towards expectations). I found it quite informative to see where he was working at and he certainly didn’t seem stressed by them!

Jules912 · 15/05/2023 09:49

Not at all, in fact this is the last year they're compulsory.

Flora56 · 15/05/2023 09:50

This is the last year. It’s to provide a target for year 6 outcomes and measure progress. The school are currently measured on progress from year 2 to year 6.

This is the last cohort to be measured in this way though, due to the implementation of a reception baseline. Next years cohort, and those after, will have progress measured from Reception to Year 6.

delilabell · 16/05/2023 10:58

I wish our school was like these mentioned. Instead they've had after school classes, homework and extra work in school. They call them "quizzes" but they know exactly what they are. They're also in mixed year 1/2 class and the year ones are having time in tje forest area whilst they're doing them. My dd has been in tears because she's worried she won't do as well as her friends. Just horrible

Tallulasdancingshoes · 16/05/2023 13:13

Mine started them yesterday and her teacher told them it was just another practise test. But she came home and told me she knew it was the real one because it was printed in colour, the holes were different and it was stapled differently to all the others. Rumbled by a 7 year old 😂

Isthatarealname · 16/05/2023 13:23

Our school aren't telling us when they are, just at some point in May so the parents don't freak the kids out too much. Kids just get given a "jazzy booklet".

This thread has now concerned me, I assume the SATs in Year 6/7 are the ones that predict GCSE? Surely the exams that my daughter will take in 10 years time will not be effected by what she is doing now.

Tallulasdancingshoes · 16/05/2023 18:14

No, they just help to track progress up to year 6. GCSE targets aren’t based in yr2 SATs.

Flora56 · 16/05/2023 19:13

Yes year 6 SATs are used to set a GCSE target. Year 2 SATs are a progress measure for schools. They set a target for Year 6 and check against Reception exit data. This is the last year due to the introduction of the Reception baseline.
