I need a handhold please

I'm going into hospital tomorrow to have the insane amount of fluid in my abdomen drained, and a CT scan, as no-one so far has been able to work out what caused it in the first place. They're ruling out a sick bug caught at work, which is what I originally thought it was, as it's dragged on so long.

Anyone had a CT scan & could talk me through it? I'm quite scared now someone's actually dealing with it properly!

Thanks MN

Hiya Op

i just recently had my first one, it’s quite fine honestly, try not to worry!

They’ll take you down to the radiography.
I was gowned up for this

they may inject a contrast medium to see everything properly, I had this. For that you have a cannula fitted.

you will lie down, probably arms over your head on the little bed trolley thing.

the contrast dye is injected into the cannula and they say it makes you feel like you peed yourself but you didn’t 😂 I found this to be true it’s very strange and you feel warm but it’s not overly uncomfortable, just strange!

then there’s a prompt telling you breathe in, hold, breathe out etc whilst they do the scans

it makes a sort of whirring noise but is open etc.

I will say I struggled with a severely altered taste and smell for about two days from the contrast but I think that may just be me, it’s never been right after my pregnancy last year!

Then somebody will talk through the findings with you and go from there

it’s great that they are investigating further and hopefully get to the bottom of things for you

I hope that helps xx

@CatchHimDerry thank you, I appreciate that! Roughly how long did it take?

I'm hoping they drain first, I can't lay flat for long if not.

Same as the post above, I had a CT with contrast last week. Took about 10 minutes to answer medical questions and get the cannula in and then the actual scan was over in about 10 minutes.

they told me the contrast makes you feel like you’re having a hot flush but as the pp had said, it felt like I’d wet myself to the point I had to check afterwards!

scan was over really quickly and not at all scary

I’m so pleased you are finally getting somewhere, you’ve been unwell for such a long time.

Yes as above the constrast is odd, I knew it would make me feel warm, but I thought it would spread through my body, but in reality within a split second I felt warm all over, it did wear off very quickly and it wasn’t an unpleasant sensation.

If you can’t lay down for long remember you can let them know if you do need a break, part of looking after you is making sure you aren’t being subjected to unnecessary pain and discomfort.

Thank you all so much, it doesn't sound too daunting after all.

The last time I was in hospital was 13 years go, giving birth to dd2!

@Simonjt it's been dead on 8 weeks of being passed round various departments til the gynae unit took over!

Best of luck for today, hope they get to the bottom of this for you Flowers

doradoo · 10/05/2023 08:35

Good luck OP - I had a CT scan otherwise and was dreading it as claustrophobic- but was fine!

Its nothing like an MRI tunnel. Contrast stuff was strange feeling though. Make sure you drink lots afterwards to flush it all through

doradoo · 10/05/2023 08:35

Last week not otherwise.... terrible typing

UsernameTaken76 · 10/05/2023 09:14

Fingers crossed for today - sounds like classic white coat syndrome! Good luck Flowers

Crunchymum · 11/05/2023 12:32

Oh bless you lucysmam I hope they were able to do your procedure.

I often post on your "what are you up to today" threads and I do recall you being poorly and never fully recovering.

I hope this is the beginning of your journey back to full fitness. Forget the handhold, I'm sending you a massive hug ❤️

Bossyboo · 11/05/2023 18:03

Another hand hold here too. I always look for your ' what's going on today' threads. Always lovely to read Smile
Hope today has been more successful and you get the answers you need Daffodil

lucysmam · 11/05/2023 18:14

Today has been a whirlwind of various tests, clinics, and ct scan. Plus the drain for the bloat...it's drained 6L so far 🤯

I'm so ready for my own bed now 💤💤
