Anyone experienced in dating furniture?

Wondered if anyone could help. My husband is about to skip this set of drawers, but i thought i'd check first if anyone knew anything about them? I doubt they're worth anything but any information on the period would be interesting.

Please don't throw them away. Donate them or give them to someone who can upcycle or restore them.

ohsuzannah · 08/05/2023 14:49

I would say 1930's

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 08/05/2023 14:52

DH is being quite annoying at the moment, so a date with Chester Drawers is sounding quite appealing Grin

Joking aside, I thought those drawers looked 1950's. I would keep them personally, but I like old style wood, so.

@GeoffPeterson very good 😌

I hope this thread has chaired you up OP, or at least console-d you.

I had a relationship with a closet once, but it went badly wrong. It was all out wardrobe in the end.

1930s lovely solid drawers just right for upcycling.

Please don’t vandalise them by painting them grey with twatty crystal handles
sand and wax/varnish

JanglyBeads · 08/05/2023 14:59

Utility Furniture probably - designed in the War to set styles, to use scarce wood.

I agree. I think they're solid oak.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 08/05/2023 15:02

Yes, restore rather than 'upcycle' as such.

I suppose I've only got my-shelf to blame.

Best comment of the thread, well played OP 👏😂

rickandmorts · 08/05/2023 15:05

Dont skip them! Put on fb marketplace or your local fb group and say they're going free. Or stick them outside on the pavement with a free sign on. They're lovely and deserve to be rehomed!

LaurieFairyCake · 08/05/2023 15:05

30's/40's drawers

Isthatascratchonmygrandmother · 08/05/2023 15:09

Thanks all! I did have my doubts about skipping them. I just didn't know anything of them. I definitely will not be painting them grey/adding glitter.

The knobs are really interesting, and so is the shape. But the angles of the photos make them hard to get a good look at and date. I wouldn't chuck them out.

Here are some more photos of the knobs

It’s 1930’s.

HashBrownandBeans · 08/05/2023 15:15

Definitely 1930s. Good solid furniture

Icantbelieveitsnotnutter · 08/05/2023 15:17

No Chippendales quips?

Johnduttonsbuttocks · 08/05/2023 15:23

I was in the closet for a short while, but I am out and proud now.

I once ended up in a drunken snog with a chair but nothing since

Not sure I’d agree that they are interesting knobs. I’ve seen better ones in my day 😉

WishingMyLifeAway · 08/05/2023 15:50

Why would you skip a perfectly good piece of furniture, regardless of its value.

If you don't want it, pop it outside on a non-rainy day with a "please take this" notice on it. It'll be gone in an hour.

Well I had a fling with a leather wing backed chair, but it didn’t work out….

🤣

imSatanhonest · 08/05/2023 16:05

I got ghosted by an Ercol table once

ItsOnlyWordsInnit · 08/05/2023 16:08

Tinder is always the best option for dating wooden furniture, I‘ve found - but it’s not very flexible, a bit too rigid.

SoupDragon · 08/05/2023 16:10

That square nut on the back of the knob looks typical of the "around 1930s" furniture I have.
