Knocking noise in my washer drum

Softoprider · 08/05/2023 13:03

There is nothing wrong with my machine. It washes the clothes and has no smell. When it spins though, there is a noise like something has got behind the drum and it rattles when it spins. It is driving me bonkers. Sometimes it sounds like a drill when the spin is fast.
Can I get behind the drum to have a look is my question ?

Ours did this when it wasn’t level. Might be worth having a look to see if you can fiddle with the feet.

Softoprider · 08/05/2023 13:44

It has been there for years. The knocking has only been going on for a few weeks. I just want to know if I can get inside the drum myself without having to call in a man

Usually it could be bouncing that's causing the knocking the other option is taking the case off the washing machine to see, but it's likely to be the feet

TheNoodlesIncident · 08/05/2023 13:47

Sounds like the bearings. Getting inside the drum... Depends on the model but you're better getting an engineer to it.

Softoprider · 08/05/2023 15:15

Thank you. I think it is the bearings. Another nail in my financial âš° coffin

It might be worth seeing if there is a YouTube video on how to replace the bearing in the washing machine and if it's an easy DIY for your specific model or not

My DH has changed the bearings in ours before although he is also an engineer so its a bit more within his skillset potentially

Daisysdandy · 08/05/2023 15:23

My drum was broken when it did a knock knock knock noise. I rang the manufacturers and they sent their engineer out who replaced it. They said it was a rare fault. He needed to take it apart to find the fault mind. I guess you need an engineer to take a look.

DogInATent · 08/05/2023 15:28

If it's not something in the drum then it could be the hanger springs or the bearing. Both are repairable but neither will get better on their own and could get worse. Get someone out. If it's out of warranty find a recommendation for a local appliance repairs business.

GoodChat · 08/05/2023 15:35

It's worth getting an engineer to check it over. It'll probably be cheaper than buying a new one to get a repair.

kitchenhelprequired · 08/05/2023 16:21

The longer you leave it the more likely it is to be irreparable. We had a drum go after I ignored the gradually increasing noises it was making.

Softoprider · 08/05/2023 16:22

It is out of the ten year warranty. I am gutted. I will buy the same machine again though as it is and still is..very good.

happened with ours it was a £1 coin bad news is it must of got caught and somehow smashed a hole in plastic outer drum

also replacing bearings is a major job the machine has to be stripped right down see YouTube video it’s not an amateur 30 minute job

Flatbellyfella · 08/05/2023 17:47

If it’s the bearing gone, you can feel it, by putting your fingers just inside of the top of the drum & try lifting it, there should be no movement up or down.

Softoprider · 08/05/2023 20:31

I'll try it

We had this recently - turned out that the concrete inside it had broken apart. I never knew they had concrete inside so I thought the plumber was having us in. Had to replace it

theblackradiator · 08/05/2023 20:47

ours did this and was a very very loud knocking sound when the weight was cracked in the bottom of the machine that stops it bouncing around the room on spin cycle. could it be a crack in the weight?

EarringsandLipstick · 08/05/2023 20:56

Having had many many issues with washing machines, my money is on the bearing or spring.

Both are not especially expensive fixes - though obviously a pain to find an engineer & get them out.

I doubt it's the concrete block (I've had that too). The noise is immense with that.

Softoprider · 19/05/2023 13:19

The drum is gone. That's what the repair man said. I am using it - gingerly and always when I am there - he told me not to use it and leave the house. It is working with small loads for now but at least I know what is wrong and am looking at new machines.

Nonylonneeded · 19/05/2023 13:25

If it’s an old machine that you like perhaps you could consider replacing with one exactly the same, second hand? To save cash

Why are you still using it OP?!

I know it's a pain, and costly but if the drum is beyond repair, you really shouldn't use the machine at all. It's dangerous to do so.

I had to manage with outdoor laundromats until I had my new machine.

Softoprider · 19/05/2023 14:19

I'm still using it because it is working perfectly. It's just noisy is all. When it conks out I'll go and buy another. I will get the same machine as well

OP posts:
shelbabab · 19/05/2023 14:24

Mine was similar. It started out loudly and then a few days later wasn't as loud. I kept using it anyway especially as noise got less. About 5 days after it started though the machine was making dirty marks on clothes. Then the next load this white stuff was coming away and the clothes came out looking minging.

It took nearly 2 weeks to get new one delivered as there weren't many options on the market for integrated machines and I wanted a 9kg. So just maybe start looking just now to see how long it wld be for delivery.

Softoprider · 19/05/2023 14:27

Yes - mine is a 9kg and I will want the same size again. I am already looking !

It can't be 'gone' then. If it's working fine just noisy, there's a fixable issue.

If he's told you it's gone, then it's not working ok. You might still be able to get it to work, but that's really not a good idea.

The bearings could be gone, a spring could be broken - all issues I have. But they are fixable for under £100.

I'm trying to think what it could be that the engineer describes it as 'gone' but it still works & can't be repaired. Did you ask him what the exact issue is?

Softoprider · 19/05/2023 14:52

The drum is cracked.
