Can everybody else do this? (Thread about random skills you have)

So, I'm not sure if this even counts as a random skill or if it's something loads of people do.
If I decide to have a nap or go to sleep for the night, I can wake up at exactly the time that I plan to...without any sort of alarm.

So today, being Sunday, decided on a quick afternoon nap from 1.10-1.25 I decided. Closed my eyes, slept instantly and woke up at exactly 1.25.

Have tested it many times and as long as I clearly tell my brain when to sleep and when to wake up, it will.

Weird or completely unspectacular? 🤷🏽‍♀️

What about you, do you have any random skills or talents?

I can write with both hands at the same time, one hand writes normal and one does mirror writing.

Rinkydinkydoodle · 08/05/2023 02:04

I can levitate birds. No-one cares.

Unless I've been spun around blindfolded I'm really good at knowing which way is North, south, east or west.I'm also really good at map reading (much better than DH). I slightly resent google maps as it takes away from proper map reading skills. So I guess technology has made my skills useless!

NotMeSecretFormular · 08/05/2023 02:43

I can catch anything that's thrown vaguely in my direction Grin

HollywoodTease · 08/05/2023 02:55

I can write backwards.

Errm, tongue, not tonuge (did I invent a new word?).

You have word inventing skills 😁

I can keep track of time when I sleep too and wake at a set time. My dad could do it as well.

I used to have a perfect sense of compass direction, but lost it when I moved into my current house. I get a sense of confusion and annoyance when I try it at home, but I used to be able to recognise North wherever I was.

A major skill is procrastination. I can tolerate a massive degree of angst and stress instead of simply getting a task done. I can hold my nerve right up to the absolute limit before exploding into action. My self-deception over achieving it before a deadline is legendary.

Goodread1 · 08/05/2023 03:10

I can be extremely insighful ,intuitive, that word soon gets around about this and then some else wants to have readings too,

I used to give good sound intuitive readings to my former bosses and a few of of my work colleagues too,

and other places too,

Once was so intuitive psychic 🔮 it freaked a former friend, out, that i was spot on,
she was happy about the idea of me giving psychic, intuitive readings before for her too,

she has good intuitive abilities too

I wake up when I need to as well and it doesn't matter when that is. Could be 3:00 AM with only 4 hours sleep and I'll wake up on the dot. I put it down to working irregular shifts in my first job and I just developed a knack for it. I haven't needed an alarm clock in over 30 years and on the very rare occasion when I have bothered to set an alarm just in case I've woken up a couple of minutes beforehand and disabled the alarm before it went off. I'm not a light sleeper either and can sleep well through just about anything when it comes to noise, light or environment.

Swansandcustard · 08/05/2023 03:19

I can’t programme myself to wake up at a certain time, but when I do wake up, 9/10 times I know what the time is before checking. This is winter/summer and anywhere.

I can wiggle my second toe on its own. Plus both little toes on their own. And wiggle my ears, one at a time. I have no use for any of these skills!

Also a mild photographic memory, which helped me remember my revision notes (literally read them off the pages), but terrible for longer term consolidation of it all. Was great at uni though.

I work in a field where visualising information is important so that helps.

Could anyone wiggle that toe with the right brain power and practice, or is that purely a birth skill?
I think the brain is so fascinating really. Everyone will have a slightly different experience of normal life.

givemecoffeenow · 08/05/2023 04:17

I can peel an orange in one piece 🍊

I also tend to wake up minutes before my alarm is set.

Plankingplanks · 08/05/2023 04:54

I can also read super fast, and also remember getting screamed at by a teacher for not reading in school when I'd actually read the book really fast. Said teacher dragged me in front to the class to quiz me on it, and went rather red faced when I got it all right!

I can take in vast quantities of information and retain them for just long enough to sit an exam or have an interview. Ask me the next day and it's gone!! Although some does sink in and I find myself months later able to talk about whatever it is I've read.

I can also read upside down, backwards or however.

I always know what the time is and I am extremely accident prone and clumsy. I swear I think my body is totally different to how it actually is, which makes catching things, or moving through places an accident waiting to happen!! 🤣

Plankingplanks · 08/05/2023 04:55

Oh and one of my sons can do that weird flower thing with his tongue. It's very odd.

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 08/05/2023 05:03

I cannot remember anything numerical, but I can look at a colour and remember’ it to a very accurate degree.

I can do stereograms (magic eye pictures) instantaneously. Both cross-eyed and parallel view.

I never got the hang of those! Would spend hours staring at them whilst others instantly said "ooh there's a giraffe!" So now I officially hate them.

I can, however, do the "can you find the cat amongst all of the pandas" type questions.

I have a photographic memory. I felt like I was cheating on my A levels as I could picture my essay plans as if I had them in front of me.

Unfortunately it's a very transient skill, I can only retain images like that for the short term.

I wish I had this skill. I hate reading wordy documents at work and would love to be able to skim read.

Did you teach yourself this skill or have you just always done it without initially realising that others can't?

JeannieAlogy · 08/05/2023 08:34

I'm definitely in the useless skills camp. I have a degree of hypermobility too - I can put my hand flat on the table and raise my ring finger independently. I can also "stack" the fingers on my right hand by crossing my middle finger over my index finger, then ring finger over the missle finger, and then the little finger on top.
I can tell when instruments are not properly tuned to pitch.
I can pick things up with my toes.
I can read upside down. Used to be able to write back to front as well as upside down but don't have much call for that.

Like a couple of PPs, I can easily trip over nothing and choke on air.

MiningForYou · 08/05/2023 08:46

If I have a meal in a restaurant, or see a photo of something I think I would like to eat, I can work out how to cook it without looking up a recipe.

It might not sound impressive but I’ve made lots of meals I had no clue about.

I’m not trained, don’t watch cookery shows and don’t even own a recipe book. I just love my food.

IHeartGeneHunt · 08/05/2023 08:54

I can guess the time to within minutes either way, without having seen a clock for hours.

I am eerily good at guessing the time. No matter when I last looked at a clock, I can accurately guess the time within 5 minutes. Often I'm wrong by a couple of mins.

Also, if I need to vomit at night I will wake up. I can lie there indefinitely, but my body politely waits until I'm sitting in front of the toilet before I retch 😂 Like I don't even have the urge to vomit unless I'm ready.
