Can everybody else do this? (Thread about random skills you have)

So, I'm not sure if this even counts as a random skill or if it's something loads of people do.
If I decide to have a nap or go to sleep for the night, I can wake up at exactly the time that I plan to...without any sort of alarm.

So today, being Sunday, decided on a quick afternoon nap from 1.10-1.25 I decided. Closed my eyes, slept instantly and woke up at exactly 1.25.

Have tested it many times and as long as I clearly tell my brain when to sleep and when to wake up, it will.

Weird or completely unspectacular? 🤷🏽‍♀️

What about you, do you have any random skills or talents?

I'm in the ear wiggle club.

Kyse · 07/05/2023 23:41

@TheodoreMortlock are you me? Grin

It's so boring explaining though
Teacher at school told me I hadn't read the book properly
People asking if I'm actually reading something
My brain thinks faster than I write so I have really messy writing
My manager tried to tell me I hadn't read something so I quoted the whole lot back to him and he hasn't ever said it again

Words like and/the/we etc are ones I just skip and if it's a book then I can read both pages at once. Don't read line by line but I can sort of look at the open pages and "read" it

moggerhanger · 07/05/2023 23:45

I usually know the time to within 10 mins accuracy, without needing to look at a clock.

I have absolutely no sense of direction though, and despite being good at understanding maps, I regularly take the wrong route on hikes and have to backtrack.

IAteAllTheTomatoes · 07/05/2023 23:45

How? I can't even fall asleep when I want, zero chance of waking up like that!

It usually takes me 1-2 hours to both fall asleep and to wake up 😞

finished31 · 07/05/2023 23:48

I can write with both hands

IHateLegDay · 07/05/2023 23:51

I'm genuinely impressed! I need about 10 alarms to get me up!

Yep that’s me as well.

Haha, that is EXACTLY the same here!

Can you read on a Kindle or similar? I can't - I suppose technically I can, but I can't read the way I usually do and I find it very frustrating.

IHateLegDay · 07/05/2023 23:53

I can guess what will happen in the near future of my friends/family and I'm nearly always right!
Most recently I told my friend she'd have twins. A month later she got pregnant with twin boys 😊

Violinist64 · 07/05/2023 23:54

I can read a piece of music like a book and “hear” it at pitch.

Kyse · 07/05/2023 23:54

@TheodoreMortlock nope, I hate it. Can't listen to audiobooks either

Changeforachange · 07/05/2023 23:58

I'm really good with names. People rarely remember mine & then have to get through an awkward conversation, trying not to make it obvious 🤣

I do get Steve & Ian mixed up very occasionally though. Too many.

DelilahBucket · 07/05/2023 23:59

I can bend my finger joints backwards, as well as my elbows and knees. People say I'm double jointed, but that's not actually a thing. It's called hypermobility. I've always had it but these days it sucks because it causes more problems than the party tricks are worth 🙄

Davros · 07/05/2023 23:16

James Bond can wake up at the time he has decided like some of you.
I can raise each eyebrow separately.

I have practiced for hours in front of a mirror trying to raise each eyebrow separately. No joy😥
What's really annoying is that the rest of my family can all do it.

I can, however, roll up the sides of my tongue into a tube.

RenoDakota · 08/05/2023 00:06

tailinthejam · 07/05/2023 23:11

I can read upside-down. The book I mean, not me.

moggerhanger · 08/05/2023 00:07

@Groutyonehereagain you'd think time and space skills would go together, wouldn't you? Annoying that they don't!

Adifferentangle · 08/05/2023 00:13

I am the same. Do you both have good eyesight? My children don't seem to have inherited this 'skill' and I feel sorry for them.

prettycolours · 08/05/2023 00:15

I can do stereograms (magic eye pictures) instantaneously. Both cross-eyed and parallel view.

MonumentalLentil · 08/05/2023 00:16

I can see pets in my house.
They are not actually alive any more, and sometimes not even mine.

ConstanceReid · 08/05/2023 00:19

Another speed reader here. I’ve noticed when my husband reads, his eyes go across each word. I don’t do this. I sort of scan lines and as a result, read about 5x faster than he does.

I can also put both legs around my shoulders at once. 🤷‍♀️

MonumentalLentil · 08/05/2023 00:20

I can also roll my tonuge into a tube and raise each eyebrow individually.

If I bend the middle knuckle of a finger and hold it stiff (and still bent) but not the top joint, then tap the top of the finger up and down it will wobble about.

Clymene · 08/05/2023 00:23

I can make my tongue into a flower (rolling with added steps), open a bottle with my teeth and read upside down. Those skills are in escalating order of usefulness

MonumentalLentil · 08/05/2023 00:58

Errm, tongue, not tonuge (did I invent a new word?).

Tarkan · 08/05/2023 01:18

My mum can stop herself having hiccups literally by saying "I don't have hiccups" and they stop. I've unfortunately not inherited the skill as hiccups can set off an attack of my heart condition and it would be really handy to just "turn them off" like she can.

However I can roll my tongue and use it like a straw in a drink. 🤣

sashh · 08/05/2023 01:21

If I can manage to sleep I can do that too OP but I quite an insomniac so have not done it for a while.

I can also estimate the time of things eg cooking, I used to freak my housemate out by standing up to go in the kitchen a fraction of a second before the timer beeped.

I can also detect very small differences in weight, I only found out this is unusual when I mentioned something about the 'heavier kindle' my carer actually weighed them (I have 2) there is a 4g difference.
