I'm stuck on one final question of the training we've all been asked to do as in invigilator training... And the JCQ website to access the information is down!

Can anyone tell me what is the correct answer to this question, please?

Your pic doesn't show the question?

DP is an EO.

Day
Date
Time
Subject
Unit/Component
Tier

Otherwise the wrong paper could be opened.

Colourgreen · 06/05/2023 23:08

Thank you so much! I will try it now 🌹

No problem - if nothing else, it proves that I do listen to him talking about work occasionally. (I'm more Data and Governance oriented in my job).

Colourgreen · 06/05/2023 23:13

Aah, I didn't understand your first sentence and now I do! I'm so tired, I've been doing this for three hours! Impressive knowledge, thank you x

You've made my night, thank you - I'm finally there!

I was expecting fireworks and confetti on the screen, but alas... At least I can go to bed now. Many thanks!

Long online training does that to me as well.

In practice, what is means is that you are making absolutely certain that before you open the packets that you have been given, they have given you that morning's Mathematics Calculator Paper for Foundation Tier and not something else.

Yay! Sleep well!

Thanks so much, NeverDrop. I appreciate your help, and the fireworks 🎇!

I'm invigilating on Tues for the first time. It's been a few months since my training and I've forgotten all my training!! I don't know why I signed up for this!

Poppins2016 · 07/05/2023 00:23

I'm just here to comment on the irony of an invigilator asking for help with their test... 😇

Poppins2016 · 07/05/2023 00:24

(It made me smile!)

Fullofpudding · 07/05/2023 00:26

Poppins the training is intense! It's all about rules and regulations rather than the content of their exam papers!

Colourgreen · 07/05/2023 11:00

I see your point, Poppins... 😆
My defence is that I have no desire to train to be an invigilator - I'm a teacher - but I was told to take an extra three hours unpaid out of my weekend to do it as we can't guarantee getting trained invigilators into school (and it's cheaper to use us). And the literature to learn the answers was on a website whose server was down, in the busy lead up to the exams when it is most needed. However, I do feel well prepped now. The testing is thorough.

Not trying to turn this into a 'why we are leaving in droves' thread, but...

I remember invigilating for exams, this is in higher education, as did DH. We received zero training. I have retired and he doesn’t have to invigilate anymore. Good luck.

Cheer yourself up by watching the Inbetweeners episode where Will has his mishap in an exam.

AtomicBlondeRose · 07/05/2023 11:10

We were all told to do this training a couple of years ago as we were short of invigilators. As teachers are not supposed to be asked to invigilate I never did it and surprise, surprise, nothing came of it. They know they’re not supposed to make you invigilate - it’s a paid position! You should get paid extra and it’s taking a job away from someone (ok they can’t get people to do them but that’s not your problem to solve).

Funkyslippers · 07/05/2023 11:15

Oh bloody hell OP, I have PTSD seeing questions like that. We have to undergo that training annually and last time it was double the amount of questions with timed assessments on each section and we had to get 100% in all of them. If we didn't get 100% we had to go back and try again from scratch to find some of the questions were different! So frustrating!

Yes, this was the same! The number of times I did that last section, with what I thought was every contortion of the six options, and then random new questions coming in but never losing this one... I was losing my mind until NeverDrop came and saved the day.

You are right, Atomic. Unfortunately I will have to invigilate (as I did last year, but without training) or our students won't be able to sit their exams, as we really, genuinely can't get staff to work at the school.

My dd21 does invigilating straight after her uni exams are done... earns some extra money for a few weeks before summer.

She started during a gap year as it was a few weeks spread over the year with gaps for travelling. Since she started they ask the students taking a gap year if they want to train up... decent money without full time commitment, and something for the CV. They are no longer short of invigilators.

Colourgreen · 07/05/2023 18:52

Oh that's a good idea for a short term job for students. My mum used to do it too, in her retirement, scribing and reading. It can be interesting and quite rewarding in the right setting.

The money is very poor for invigilators and the time involved bitty. At my school about minimum wage and very mean on time to be in school. I am support staff (highly qualified) and wont volunteer whereas the local indep secondary school are offering at least 40% more per hour. So I shall be looking at that next year.

Colourgreen · 07/05/2023 20:41

Yes I was surprised to see that local schools were offering about the minimum wage for invigilators. There's quite a lot to remember!

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 07/05/2023 20:46

i'm in Scotland it's 10.90 an hour with a minimum of 3 hours paid per session of even if exam is only 1 hour long you get 32.70 ( you need to be there about 30 minutes before exam and it takes about 15 minutes after, but with an hours exam there is certainly some children allowed extra time etc

Oh god, us too! My department and I all did it at the same time in our department office. All computers on, with the JCQ guidance up on one of them, and we just went through it all together.

Clearly didn't help - I had no idea what the answer was to your question!
