70% increase in car insurance!

We've just had renewal offer through, increase from around £1k to £1700. That's for three cars on a multi-car policy. I was horrified.

Just called and they struggled to get it down, managed to reduce to £1400. Is anyone else having the same problem?

Mine went up a little bit this year but renewals have always been expensive so I switch providers every year to get the cheapest deal. Have you shopped around on a comparison website?

Semm · 06/05/2023 13:20

Yes mine went up recently and there was another thread just a few days ago along similar lines! Really frustrating.

Nimbostratus100 · 06/05/2023 13:21

have you made any claims? or many more claims in your area?

Interested in this thread?

That's insane. We had two cars, two drivers, £42pcm.

Have you added a driver?

Have you had any claims?

Have you gone onto comparison sites?

NoIncomeTaxNoVAT · 06/05/2023 13:23

Are you with Admiral by any chance? My renewal quote has gone from £250 to £320 for no changes whatsoever. I need to call them but I'll probably switch this year. My car is 20 yrs old and not even worth £320!! 😖😖

Orangebadger · 06/05/2023 13:28

My car insurance wasn't so bad but my buildings and contents insurance went from £400 pa to £750!!! Nuts needless to say I found cover elsewhere.

SecretsIWouldNeverTell · 06/05/2023 13:31

Contact them and say you want a much better deal or you'll walk.

My insurance company doubled mine last year, (went from £255 a year to £500,) and when I rang them, the dropped it to £303. Stupid. May as well have done that in the first place.

Kyse · 06/05/2023 13:33

Shop around, I do every year
I check confused and go compare, and then use Quidco for cash back too
Mine almost doubled, when I tried elsewhere it was only £20 more for the year and I got £40 back from Quidco
There's no benefit in having loyalty, it doesn't pay!

NoSquirrels · 06/05/2023 13:36

It’s been in the news - insurance hikes all round this year. At least 10%, some much more.

JagerbombsUnite · 06/05/2023 13:38

Renewal offers are always extortionate. That's why I switch provider anually.

inappropriateraspberry · 06/05/2023 14:38

My renewal went up £8 to £216 for one car. My excess was already low at £95, but is now only £45! Not sure why, I claimed for a damaged bumper (own fault).
I'm with Hastings, if that's any help.

Theunamedcat · 06/05/2023 14:43

I rang told them i got a lower quote and they matched it

Shop around they are only taking the piss because people let them there is no way the cost of living has increased their outgoings by 50% they have cut staff some work from home so they have lower outgoings we are all hurting but all they are doing is increasing the amount of uninsured drivers on the road

Yes! I am with Admiral. They've always been good, even reduced it last year down from £1200 to £1000.

I will do a comparison but it's tedious having to enter all the info they ask for, was hoping Admiral would just reduce it!

I wouldn't have batted an eyelid at 10% but 70%??!

Admirals renewal quotes are outrageous. Shop around.

cryinglaughing · 06/05/2023 15:12

Those multi car policies are expensive anyway.
We did it once as it was best for our newly passed teen.
Now, we are all insured by different companies and I shop round every year for the best deals.

Ilikewinter · 06/05/2023 15:26

I think car insurance on the whole has gone up, even shopping around DH went up nearly £100 and my DM was initally quoted a renewal fee of £700 .... for a Fiat 500 🤣🤣🤣 not sure what planet her insurance company was on

We were told years ago that it was best to have a multi car policy due to having three cars, two drivers and two no claims discounts. I don't know if that's actually the case!

They've always been good, even reduced it last year down from £1200 to £1000.

And this year they reduced it from £1700 to £1400? It’s about the same percentage decrease they offered you. So it’s probably a ‘standard’ retention offer that you get if you call. You probably could have had it cheaper for several years if you’d shopped around. If you do the work on comparison site before you call to haggle with the retentions team that’s the best way.

ichundich · 06/05/2023 18:36

Have you tried price comparison sites? I never renew with the same insurer because the quote always goes up even though the car has decreased in value.

KnottyKnitting · 06/05/2023 18:57

Yep- my dads went up from 550 to £900. No claims, full no claims bonus, clean driving record.

He called them and they dropped it to £800. I went on Confuse.com and got a well respected policy for him for £580. He rang the other company and told them to get knotted! It's always advisable to shop around. I have had to do it many times- insurance companies just bank on inertia- that people won't query their ridiculous hikes.

GoodChat · 06/05/2023 19:05

OP go on their website and see what your quote would be as a new customer. Then get them to give you that price.

No, the reduction from £1200 to £1000 was in their renewal offer, it wasn't down to me haggling. I've never had to before

OP posts:
TeenagersAngst · 06/05/2023 20:06

So, I've done some comparisons this afternoon and all so fat come out more expensive than the £1400 I've been offered. So maybe we'll be staying with Admiral after all!

OP posts:

We had our main car insurance quote and it was increased by £150 but I got the price down to £80 more than last year. We then got our second car insurance through which has a 19 and 21 year on and it had doubled! Phoned them up to try and get price down but couldn’t, tried comparisiiom sites and could only get £50 cheaper but required a black box so stuck with original company,
