70% increase in car insurance!

TeenagersAngst · 06/05/2023 13:17

We've just had renewal offer through, increase from around £1k to £1700. That's for three cars on a multi-car policy. I was horrified.

Just called and they struggled to get it down, managed to reduce to £1400. Is anyone else having the same problem?

The new GIPP rules should stop renewals being more expensive than new policies (wasn’t that way before). And insurance has been hammered by inflation…if you crash the cost of repairing the car is c15% higher than it was a year ago…and that’s before you consider that the insurers assets (that back your policy) have been walloped by market movements (Ukraine etc). I’m expecting a hefty increase this year.

So, I've done some comparisons this afternoon and all so fat come out more expensive than the £1400 I've been offered. So maybe we'll be staying with Admiral after all!

Have you looked at individual policies in comparison?

BillyNoM8s · 06/05/2023 22:36

We are with Hastings and renewal quote is £150 more than last year. Zero claims. 3 years NCB.

Comparison sights are only cheaper with lesser known insurers with mixed reviews and higher excess, or poorly rated black box policiesConfused it's shit.

Never expected to be paying nearly £800 a month in our mid 30's.

I had an absolute fuck up with Hastings and swore never to use them again. They did come out a bit cheaper for me this year but nope, paid the extra and went with more than

Long story but I got rear ended on the motorway. Can that hit me said he got hit from behind
I had to pay the excess which was about £300 and it was a non fault claim. That was June and I didn't get my excess back for... 6 months

SinnerBoy · 07/05/2023 04:56

Call Adrian Flux, they are a broker. We've been with them for about 8 years, since Kwik Fit rolled ours over, without permission, from £300 to £900.

We mostly get a new company, I think it was Aviva last year. Tell them what you paid for the previous one and they will try to beat it.

They got our £900 quote down to about £350.

Username84 · 07/05/2023 05:26

I'm not surprised, look at their financial results.
https://www.insurancetimes.co.uk/news/catch-up-on-insurers-full-year-financial-results-for-2022/2023/1443975.article

Reductions on investments (what they do with your premium), massive inflation in repairs due to parts and staff shortages, prices of used cars way up, mileage back up since covid. Basically it costs them a load more to insure you than before and they still want to make a profit.

GoodChat · 07/05/2023 06:09

@Kyse Jesus Christ if you think thats a massive fuck up wait til you have an accident that was absolutely not your fault, the other driver admitted fault at the scene, then they tried to immediately settle 50/50. Disputed that and was settled (eventually) in my favour. 3 years later they contacted me again to tell me the other side had contested and they were going 50/50 again and had to go through the whole argument all over. They threatened court proceedings and everything.

That was Axa.

Are you with Admiral by any chance? My renewal quote has gone from £250 to £320 for no changes whatsoever. I need to call them but I'll probably switch this year. My car is 20 yrs old and not even worth £320!! 😖😖

@NoIncomeTaxNoVAT I’m with Admiral as well and my renewal has just come through and it’s gone from £210 a year to £440! No claims, no changes, nothing.

OP go on their website and see what your quote would be as a new customer. Then get them to give you that price.

I tried that and their system recognise you from the car details

My renewal went up £8 to £216 for one car. My excess was already low at £95, but is now only £45! Not sure why, I claimed for a damaged bumper (own fault).
I'm with Hastings, if that's any help.

We’re with Hastings too, it dropped £70 last year and then went up 12p this year. I was happy to renew on those terms.

TeenagersAngst · 07/05/2023 07:13

@LadyPenelope68 that will almost certainly come down a bit if you call them. The renewal offers must be high based on the assumption some will challenge them and some won't

@TeenagersAngst
i rang them, they could only reduce it to £380 which is still a huge increase for Jo changes on policy and 10 years NCB.

I have been with Aviva for about 3 years, my renewal last year went down about £10 and my renewal this year went up about £10 so I haven't bothered changing, my insurance is about £210. DH is with Aviva and his went up a similar percentage, his insurance is about £300 as it's a bigger car.

The thing about car insurance is that it's totally bespoke to the individual, the only valid comparison is for your specific details with different providers. There's no value in any other comparisons

If youre happy with your renewal offer and dont want the hassle of filling in the comparison site questions that's good but for most people prices are going up and its worth the bother even if just to sure your renewal is the best value

They're going on my no list too Grin

Hastings also nearly paid out when my car rolled with the handbrake off into a parked car, the statement from the other car owner said "both cars were parked and unoccupied" and then he tried to claim injury Hmm
