Needing the Loo at the coronation.

Some of the guests have been there since 7am.
Are they allowed to go out for the loo.
What about the musicians/guards etc.
I'd of had to turn down the invite if I'd received one.

MN is obsessed with wondering how people can manage a couple of hours without needing the loo.

Obviously anyone with health problems may well need to go fairly often but surely anyone else should not?

I am almost 70, drink quite a lot of tea and fruit juice during the day but only go about every 5 to 6 hours. If I go out I can go all day without going to the loo - upto to 9 hours.

My sister is the same as me and so is DH. We surely can't be that unusual?

There are lots of jobs where it's not possible to use the loo very often.

CabernetSauvignon · 06/05/2023 17:56

I assumed that Charles and Camilla were making a quick dash to the loo during that bit at the end when they disappeared for quite a long time, given that they still had a long ride in a jiggling carriage to get through. But DH's view was that it was a chance for Justin Welby to hand round the gins.

There were people camped out from yesterday early evening until late afternoon today. They had to hold it in a lot longer than a few hours. What happens with them? There must be someone on here who has done something similar.

When I heard that Judi Dench had turned up at 8.45 a.m., my first thought was "Surely they're not going to make a national treasure like Dame Judi cross her legs for four hours?"

Portaloos and/or nearby cafés and pubs.

Beargrumps22 · 06/05/2023 18:06

Phaps they give Camilla a shewee behind the curtains! i have an irritable bladder so hanging on is not an option for me or follows days of pain

honeyimstillfree · 06/05/2023 18:16

leg bag

ejbaxa · 06/05/2023 18:19

I’d have worn an adult nappy. It was a very, very strange arrangement. Surely they could have had a toilet monitor.

SleazyLizzard · 06/05/2023 18:29

At the Queen’s funeral there were loads of loos in the area near The Mall and Buckingham Palace

Unfortunately for me, I'm recently finding that needing the loo bears little relation to how much I've drunk- yesterday I had a cup of coffee at 7am and needed the loo 3 times by 12:30.
If I drink alcohol it's worse, can't drink if I've got to travel more than about 40 mins to get home. Very inconvenient, and yes it does affect daily life. I've noticed I do plan activities around availability of loos, not much fun but no choice.
I know many of my similarly aged friends are similar .

Limetreee · 06/05/2023 18:54

Mydogisthebest. I’m like you late 60s I drink a bottle of water, three coffees, and a can of soft drink and I don’t need to go for at least 8 hours.

I was hoping Charles' prostate is small!

So was I.

Toddlerteaplease · 06/05/2023 18:55

I bet the cloister garden was full of portaloos

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 06/05/2023 19:11

A portaloo would be fine for all the nobodies like us; but can you imagine hearing somebody re-arranging all of their finery inside one and then seeing a royal, foreign president, dignitary or top celebrity emerging from one? Especially if they needed to indicate to you that you might want to give it 10 minutes Grin

I believe there are plenty of portaloos. (Autocorrect prefers 'portals' so maybe them too.)

CaptainMyCaptain · 06/05/2023 19:28

I was once at an event a day after the Queen had been there and used the Royal portaloo. It wasn't one of those plastic kiosks it was on caravan type wheels and quite nice.

I guess it's like running a marathon. They must train

I agree woth this - got a similar friend to you - crazy!

Perhaps it's the fact we know more about healthy living now than we did decades ago? Eg we know that we should drink 2-3 litres of water a day, etc.

Bluebellsinbloom41 · 06/05/2023 19:57

What I was wondering actually was what if Charles or Camilla had been ill, like norovirus or something... Think how disruption it would have caused if they'd had to cancel it.

There has been an obsession with drinking water in the last couple of decades and an anxiety about being dehydrated which is really over the top. I have a friend who can’t go anywhere without a bottle of water that she sips constantly. It’s like being with a toddler because she needs to go to the toilet so often. Days out are spoiled by her need to go and her worry she won’t find anywhere.

I was born in the 1960s. Until the 1990s people just drank at meal times when they ate. There was no sense that you had to carry liquid with you at all times and consume it frequently.

Yay, I thought it was just me who thought this (1964 baby here).

Jules912 · 06/05/2023 20:51

This happened in the past ( Edward VII I think). Of course there was no tv in those days but they'd already prepared all the food for the feast. They gave it to the poor, but a lot still went to waste.

LizzieSiddal · 06/05/2023 20:57

Agree with others that going for a day out with someone who’s constantly drinking water is such a bloody faff when you’re constantly having to stop for a loo. If i’m going out for the day I just drink less than usual in the morning. and make up for it in the evening.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 06/05/2023 21:02

I used to be a teacher. Can't leave a lesson for a wee and normal not to have time at break and lunch to go. Quite often I went to the loo when I got up at half six in the morning and went again when I got home at half six in the evening. I'd still drink and eat in the day. It's just what you get used to.

Yes I have been puzzled why people need to drink water every few minutes of the day ..am a 1963 child ! All my co workers under 30 have a water bottle that they constantly sip on .

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 06/05/2023 21:07

I'm an '83 baby and I don't do it! I get my liquid from copious cups of tea 😁. And never take a water bottle on a trip out; who could possibly be arsed to carry it round all day?!
