Phone you can hold in one (small) hand - any still out there?

Recommendations please! Does anyone still have a phone they can hold in only one small perfectly normal sized female hand? Didn’t think it was such a big ask, but everything seems to be basically tablet sized now. Except the iPhone minis. If you do have an iPhone mini, is it worth the price and are they still super breakable?

I don’t take many photos and I listen to music but don’t really watch videos. Ideally, I’d like something cheap I can shove in my bag or drop without feeling guilty, and that will fit in the pocket of my jeans.

Any suggestions? What do you have? Would you like to have a bit of a rant about the male dominated tech industry?

Holding my iPhone 13 mini in one hand right now.

Me too! Love it, everyone laughs at how small it is!!

I have a redmi 10 as I hate big phones. It's ok, camera is limited at best but better than my ability to aim so not an issue for me...

Samsung Galaxy M52

iPhone 13 mini here and it’s great. Bought it so it would fit in front jeans pockets.

It is pretty much the same size as the newest SE but the actual screen on the mini is slightly bigger.

Occasionally I regret its small size as my eyesight is not great but mostly I’m very happy with it. I have had it since they came out so Sept 2021, no problems /damage/ change in performance so all good.

DS1(14), who is very very fussy about tech, has the iPhone mini, even though his hands are ginormous🤣 He loves it. It is his best friend. He doesn't like big phones, preferring something he can stick in his school blazer or trouser pocket without it stabbing him when he leans over. It has survived being dropped a couple of times. He is young though, with good eyesight. I can barely see the phone, let alone the rubbish he shows me on it.

Yes my phone!

One disadvantage of the iPhone mini is that the smaller screen size means that some pages look a bit cramped, or push the important bits off the top/bottom of the screen. Often with cookie notifications, the accept button is too far down. And google also tucks the search bar slightly above the top, meaning you can’t actually see what you’re typing unless you pull the screen down a bit.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 07/05/2023 11:58

I am with you. My last phone slipped out of my hands, it was so big and awkward. I went to Tescos the same day an d got a cheap IMO phone which was much smaller. The assistant said they couldn't recommend it because it was much slower, but I can't say I care as I'm happier with a smaller phone.

Think I have a iphone 12. It's in my right hand.

AWaferThinMint · 07/05/2023 12:28

I typed this one handed on an iPhone 12 mini. I find having a pop socket on the back helps. A decent case and fragility isn’t an issue.

Mermaidinmymind · 07/05/2023 13:06

I have a Samsung S22 & can hold it in one hand. The only downside is that the battery isn't brilliant.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 07/05/2023 13:35

I have an iPhone se2020 as I have the same issue

Malarandras · 07/05/2023 13:38

I have normal size hands and I’m holding an iPhone 13 Pro in one hand.

tectonicplates · 07/05/2023 17:18

I’d just point to point out that I’ve tried out the Samsung S22 and S23 several times and no, I cannot hold them in one hand. They are simply not small enough. Samsung need to make a genuinely mini phone, and by mini I mean no larger than the iPhone 13 mini. I was holding out for mini phone for ages but my old phone was becoming unusable so I had to give in and get the iPhone. Still really annoyed about the whole situation. Why are Samsung so determined to ignore women?

Rockbird · 07/05/2023 17:41

I'm a 5' 2" woman holding a 14 pro max with one hand. If a small phone is your preference then crack on but this isn't a male/female thing so don't make it one. The only woman I know with a small phone is my 77yo mother. Everyone else manages their phone just fine.

tectonicplates · 07/05/2023 17:43

@Rockbird Have you read Caroline Criado Perez’s book? On average, women have smaller hands than men. It’s biology. Most of the people needing smaller phones are women. It is absolutely a sexism issue.

Depends what you mean by "with one hand". Personally I want to be able to USE the phone with one hand, which means holding it with thumb at the bottom and ring finger at the top while using the index finger for scrolling. And for that, yes, the fact women have smaller hands on average absolutely does play a role.

OP - Samsung A41 in my case, although it's at the upper end of what I find workable. Also obviously not a new model.

asimileofsomesmoke · 07/05/2023 21:36

I think this thread is demonstrative that everyone else doesn't manage just fine 🙃

Obviously not every woman has smaller hands, but across large sample sizes it's a trend. And given that period trackers were left off the first all-you-could-possibly-need-in-health-monitoring smartwatches, and that the first voice activated AIs had (and still) have much better voice recognition for deep voices compared to higher pitched ones, I think I'm justified in suspecting smartphone size has something to do with the average hand size of most of the mostly male designers. I accept that there are also non-sexist reasons, like the increased use of video, for having bigger screens. But there's also an element of thoughtlessness about it that is consistent with a wider trend of ignoring women's needs.

Did you know that almost all car crash test dummies are based on male height, weight and proportions? And many dummies that are supposed to be female are just smaller versions of the male dummy, rather than adjusted for a different average waist-to-hip and waist-to-breast ratio? Incidentally, did you know that while women are statistically less likely to be involved in a car accident, a woman who is involved in a car accident is statistically more likely to die than the average person involved in a car accident?

I'm another with an iPhone 13 Mini. I can balance it in one (bizarrely small) hand, and swipe or tap with my thumb. It also fits easily into most pockets (I'm handbag averse).

I'd have loved a larger screen, but size and weight makes them cumbersome and tiring for small hands, as well as less discreet, and awkward to carry.

Apple stopped making the Mini after the 12 and 13, so if this is your fancy, track one down quickly!
