Where would you go in Europe for two months of healing time ?

I’ve had the most horrific year with ex. Sadly, I’ll have to leave my home in a few weeks. I was hoping to buy a new place, but nothing seems to be working out for me. So much has happened and feel so overwhelmed and like I can’t cope anymore. Thinking of sticking my stuff in storage and leaving the UK to go somewhere peaceful for a couple of months to process everything.

Where would you go?

Also Croatia. Just so chilled. Hvar - just lovely xx

Beula82 · 04/05/2023 22:08

Another couple.
Transcarpathian Alps in Romania - like going back in time in spectacular beauty. Farming by hand, no tourists, remote and so welcoming.
Montenegro- like Switzerland before the people came. Huge diversity of landscapes, mountains, beaches, gorgeous old city of Kotor set between the lake and the sea.

Countries where you can have both the mountains and the sea nearby would be beautiful for you. I second Croatia. Great food, beautiful swimming and stunning mountains and sea. San Sebastián/Donostia for similar reasons. Amazing food, mountains and sea right there and it’s just a beautiful place to be. Anywhere on the Amalfi coast for similar reasons, only downside is that it’s pricey.

Happy healing OP 💐

Thank you for the book recommendation. This looks very interesting and it resonates - I suppose I’ve had a lack of community in my life through all the trials and turned inwards for a very long time. Feels like things will always be this way if I don’t change things soon.

It's just normal to turn inwards to protect ourselves in times of trouble. You just need to take some time and then to unfurl again. All will be well.

Rome

QueenOfHiraeth · 04/05/2023 22:25

Another vote for Northern Portugal. If I could run away that's where I'd go, it has everything

I’m really not very good around people at the moment - it’s been an intensely difficult year that’s dredged up lots of other shit. I feel so lost when I’m around people. Just spent a lovely few days in Norway at a celebration at my dearest friend’s house. I found myself dying to escape to my room for silence every so often as it was all too much. I fear this has become my normal. Awful really. But I think I do need to learn to socialise again, and some time working might be good whilst away.

I hear you. We only have 1-2 volunteers at a time (small farm in Portugal) - the most interesting people are the ones who are using the solitude and beauty of the place, and the quiet companionship of the horses, to give their senses time to recover.

@Magnoliainbloom well it's summer in Greece but none are on the package tour circuit- hydra doesn't have sandy beaches so it's upmarket but has no big hotels etc- they are all lovely

I would go back to the Azores in a heartbeat.

I think the suggestion of Slovenia by a PP is good. Gorgeous, quite eco-oriented, manageable, etc.

In my experience, it always helps to go back to the place you most felt yourself to do some soul-searching. Some places just somehow are more 'you' than others. I guess for me this would be the place I went to uni as an 18 yr old. Whenever I need a reset, I go back there, and spend some time thinking about what my actual hopes and priorities are.

jannier · 04/05/2023 22:51

Italy every time.

declutteringmymind · 04/05/2023 22:55

I'm not Christian but I fancy the Camino.

Or I would do Italy. Start on a beach and interail as I fancied. Roam around Florence, Venice and back on a beach or lake Como.

You are absolutely doing the right thing.

PastTheGin · 04/05/2023 22:58

Scandinavia. Lots of space and nature, not many people. Rent a hut somewhere in the back of beyond and enjoy the silence! Denmark for endless windswept, sandy beaches, Sweden/Norway/Finland for forests and lakes.

HappiDaze · 04/05/2023 23:06

Find a relaxing yoga retreat

It will be full of solo travellers and I think it will be a kind calm and fun environment to take your mind off everything

OneCup · 04/05/2023 23:08

I d reconnect with nature for a month (mountains or sea side) then would go to a city. Bit like a rebirth.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 04/05/2023 23:10

South of France and head towards northern Italy.

AlltheFs · 04/05/2023 23:14

Javea, Costa Blanca. It is opposite Ibiza (can get a boat over) and it’s on some
ley lines. Beautiful mountain and scenery and very healing. It has a good energy.

HappiDaze · 04/05/2023 23:18

Something like these which are cheaper long term or you could try different ones that are easy enough to travel between

I've been wanting to go to Tromso for a long stay. I've never been but I really like the look of it and the northerly-ness. A really pretty, contained, little town in the middle of absolutely nowhere with mountains and sea.

SkaneTos · 04/05/2023 23:19

Jylland (Jutland), Denmark, or Jamtland, Sweden.

Sofahugs · 04/05/2023 23:20

agree Croatia is stunning, Italy if you have a bigger budget. I think Spain has lots of great cities and tourist areas linked to a really good rail service, easy to work your way down from Barcelona to Malaga (which has a great bus station).

personally I would focus on an individual country, and give it a good tour.

SkiingIsHeaven · 04/05/2023 23:22

I would drive to the alps. Move around there a bit then head over to the Italian lakes.

DestinationTravel · 04/05/2023 23:27

Bali.

I know you said Europe, but do consider Asia as well. I went for a week long 'healing' break, and ended up staying for months as it was so affordable, with friendly people and a community-oriented diverse culture.. I find Europe too isolating sometimes when I go on solo breaks - Asia is far more welcoming.

I also recommend Nerja in Spain for a seaside break @Magnoliainbloom

LaviniasBigBloomers · 04/05/2023 23:27

If I was in your shoes I'd eurorail around for a couple of months.

If you want a base and like Portugal, we went to Olhao last spring (disclaimer, it's close to Faro so may have more tourists in the summer) and I fell in love with it. There's an amazing food market and you can live on buttons. There's a weird sort of modern development which I guess was built before Covid then people couldn't afford to live there? It's a little odd but there are loads of super-cheap Air BnBs there.

Brittany in France is lovely. Morlaix has a port, you can walk around, a market twice a week, old medieval houses, lovely little bakery selling fresh bread and croissants every day, ice cream shops selling Italian ice cream. Pavement cafes and beautiful Italian restaurants, a high aquaduct you can walk over and 20 mins from the coast and 200 metres from the start of the National Forest so lots of hiking and bike trails. There is a Tourist Information Centre that has bike hire too. It is very beautiful scenery. Look for Morlaix, Brittany in Google.
