Why is thinking/ making dinner so utterly soul destroying

Honestly I'm just in from work and the 3 kids are glaring at me telling me they're hungry. It's my least favourite part of the day lol inspiration needed today 🙏

God, I feel you. It's so utterly soul destroying.
Pasta?
Wraps with whatever is left in the fridge?
Stirfry?
Jacket potato?
These are my go-tos for fast meals.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 04/05/2023 17:42

Pasta.
Or freezer pizza.

starpatch · 04/05/2023 17:42

Oh god I actually mostly enjoy cooking but its the mind numbing daily demand of it

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 04/05/2023 17:42

Or fry up or omlette

kingofchaos · 04/05/2023 17:44

I hear you!

My DS is uber fussy and will only eat a fairly limited amount of things, so often I make 2 separate things for him and DD.

I think it's also the chore of cooking/ clearing up after a long day at work too 😩

kingofchaos · 04/05/2023 17:44

It's pizza and salad tonight!

Lamelie · 04/05/2023 17:46

It’s because it’s relentless. Whether you’re hungry or tired or fancy oysters and a glass of wine- the bairns need feeding.

sweettoffeecake · 04/05/2023 17:47

Yes I feel the same. I actually used to enjoy cooking when I was part time and had more time to organise something nice. Today however im only in from my full time job -I'm juggling 2 rounds of football pick ups, a dance lesson and homework with a one hour window to have dinner. Will I be judged if it's beige food with lots of ketchup 🙈

I used to feel like this but my 13 year old DS discovered a love for cooking and now does it all! He tells me what he wants to make and I just have to do the shopping. He does make me do the cleaning up though but it’s better than having to do both.

I am SO envious. I'd happily clean if someone else cooked. I prefer cleaning.

Vassari · 04/05/2023 17:50

I'm new here, but I thought I'd share a tip. I make a weekly menu of meals and I assign them to a day of the week. That way there's never any wondering about what's for dinner that night and it also saves money as you're not overspending thinking that you'll buy this and use it for "something". Less stress and if your children are old enough they can even start preparing part of the meal so you have even less to worry about when you get home. :)

Modda · 04/05/2023 17:50

Full English? Mine love that as a dinner

You've hit the jackpot there alright! Usually my DH makes a start but he's away with work so it's on me tonight. I'm tired too so I'm feeling very irritated by all this feeding of offspring lol

Meal planning is definitely the way forward. It's a pity I am too disorganised even for that! I keep thinking I will do it and then I go off piste!

I feel very lucky! He makes good food too 😀.

PickAChew · 04/05/2023 17:53

The kids won't judge you. Sometimes freezer food is a necessary evil.

sweettoffeecake · 04/05/2023 17:54

I've tried all the tips and tricks, turns out I'm too useless for all that plus my children like to test my resolve by limiting their repertoire by about 20% of as the week goes on- they're very kind like that 😫

I could not agree more.
I totally hate everything about it the shopping, planning and especially the cooking.
I just made dinner and there was swearing

philautia · 04/05/2023 17:56

If I haven't made / prepared something already, my emergency family meals are:

Pasta with a quick homemade sauce or pesto

Jacket potato with cheese, beans or tuna and salad

Beans or scrambled egg on toast

Cheese and ham omelette

Fish finger sandwiches

Usually though, I plan what I'm doing at the weekend for the days we're all eating together, so things like chicken and vegetable noodle stir fry, toad in the hole with vegetables, homemade vegetable soups with nice bread and butter, cottage pie, spaghetti bolognaise all go down well in our house.

If I think about it long enough I swear I could actually build up enough tangible rage to murder someone

Yep, I hear you and I don't even have children Grin

Kpo58 · 04/05/2023 18:10

I hear you. Unfortunately my kids won't eat stir fried yet. They aren't keen on non roasted potatoes and are bored of pasta.

Dillydollydingdong · 04/05/2023 18:10

Takeaway?

Mumtobabyhavoc · 04/05/2023 18:13

Eggs, fruit, pancakes. 😋
