It's called the Cinderella Effect. Children living with a step parent are 40 to 100 times more likely to be murdered.

I don't dispute this figure at all, but do you have a source for it as I would like to quote

FourTeaFallOut · 02/05/2023 19:16

Neurodiversitydoctor · 02/05/2023 19:15

I don't doubt it, but do you have a link ?

Sure

BSB30 · 02/05/2023 19:16

@Nimbostratus100 I know 😞. I'm guessing they didn't want to get involved but in a situation like that, I wouldn't care what the parents tried to do to me.

Poor poor little boy. Heartbreaking. I don't understand how any parent can do this.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 02/05/2023 19:17

Poor little boy. This hurts my heart. Why does it keep happening?

Nimbostratus100 · 02/05/2023 19:18

JamHam · 02/05/2023 19:13

Lots of people did, and repeatedly reported it.

really! wow ! why on earth wasn't it acted on? ! awful!

MichelleScarn · 02/05/2023 19:20

Also another who can't read the article and feel like a coward for this. Hoping also there's no soft sentence for the 'mother'.

BSB30 · 02/05/2023 19:05

It said neighbours saw but I couldn't just watch, I would physically go and get the child, bring him in my house and call the police.

People say this but the reality is they wouldn’t. A quick google suggests Howell was a convicted drug dealer long before he shacked up with Alfie’s mother. I’ve no doubt he was intimidating to neighbours. The article suggests concerns were reported to social services and the police which is as much as most people would do.

It was. Alfie was open to social services and Howell wasn’t supposed to be there at night. But a chronically underfunded social services department won’t have the resources to check up out of hours more than every so often. We’ll know more when the case review is published.

optimistic40 · 02/05/2023 19:26

I can't bear to read these as I feel unwell for days afterwards. No punishment will really seem just, either.

DiscoBeat · 02/05/2023 19:29

Me too. This is so so sad. I just want to give the poor little boy a big hug and help and it's too late for anyone to do that. I will never understand how a mother can be that way toward her child. I hope they get the maximum possible sentence.
Also, I think any 'partner' moving in to a family should be subject to background checks. There must have been something violent in his past.

optimistic40 · 02/05/2023 19:30

Neighbours saw the abuse? That's awful. Yes, I would call the police.

GoodChat · 02/05/2023 19:32

They did. And social services. Repeatedly.

StarDolphins · 02/05/2023 19:37

There’s so many of these horrific cases & many more that don’t make the news.

Yet when I insist I will remain single because I refuse to bring an unrelated man into my DD’s home, I get shot down.

i see it all the time, split up & reach for the nearest guy.

Lots of people did, and repeatedly reported it.

Yep. And it sounds as if there had already been similar (?) Issues with this mother and a previous partner. This is just vile.

I hate knowing that it isn't unusual.😫

GoodChat · 02/05/2023 18:39

I hope they get done for murder. Both of them. Not the soft sentences they give the mothers.

This. The mother sound get more. Hope they both rot

FearTheWankingDead · 02/05/2023 19:46

There’s so many of these stories. No doubt we will read about another one in a few weeks.

AAAAABBBBBCCCCC · 02/05/2023 19:49

You would have to batter me to death before you laid a finger on my child...

ShowUs · 02/05/2023 19:49

On a previous thread someone said that they wonder if it’s a bit like when lions kill a lioness’s young because it is basically competition and the male lion only wants his DNA surviving and have the lioness as only his mate and no other males.

ShowUs · 02/05/2023 19:53

What was so awful was the thread that was deleted yesterday.

A young girl was in pain and crying which made the mother angry and attack her.

The amount of posters calling the young girl a brat and that she deserved it was sickening!

I can’t ever imagine saying any child deserves being physically punished especially when they weren’t doing anything wrong but some of the replies were sick and sadistic and they would have absolutely defended their partner for attacking his child because in their mind the child must have deserved it.

Yep same here, and then people say "don't you deserve happiness too" I AM bloody happy, and DS's happiness is more important.

But 'lessons will be learned', I bet.

Social services and, more to the point, the government that fails to fund them sufficiently NEED to be held to account. Yet another child failed.

Lessons weren't learned over Victoria Climbie, which was when I was at school. Primary school.

OP posts:
ShowUs · 02/05/2023 19:57

But the court heard it did not take long for relatives and neighbours to 'contact the authorities' with their concerns over the pair and social services instituted a care plan which barred Howell from staying overnight at her property in Droitwich, Worcestershire, where Alfie died.

Jurors were told the pair paid lip service to the rule, with Howell regularly staying over.

From the link.
So they were known to be a risk to the child and yet the child was allowed to stay or didn’t have regular checks.

It’s sickening that this was something that could have been avoided quite easily.

Don't place too much emphasis on what people say here. There is an entire cohort of posters who seek out threads to be provocatively anti-children on a board built for mothers.

tillytoodles1 · 02/05/2023 20:00

She should be sterilised and him castrated to prevent either of them having any children in the future, but then everyone will say its against their human rights. They should be hanged or at least imprisoned unti the day they die for what they did to that poor little boy.

I’m exactly the same! The ‘you deserve happiness’ implies only having a man makes me happy! But like you, I am happy with my choices & my DD stable & happy home is my only priority & she makes me happy! I am fulfilled with my life.

I might get myself a companion (with his own house) when she leaves home!
