My dd woke up with a fever, headache and nausea last night, threw up once. Today much the same, a temperature and nausea/stomach pain with headache but not actually vomiting. This evening she's complained that her neck hurts. I then checked and she has a pin prick rash on her torso.

Obviously I was immediately thinking "shit, meningitis". How've, I wouldn't describe her as very unwell. She's under the weather, a bit mopey, but definitely doesn't look systemically unwell. Called 111, they're total shit, will only ask questions based on one symptom - I explained I was concerned specifically about the combination of symptoms but no joy. They've arranged a call back at some point, no doubt when she's in bed and I'll have to drag her out then.

Would you go to A&E now or wait? As I say, she does not appear critically unwell, it's just the combination of symptoms concerning me.

I would be taking her for sure. I had meningitis when I was 2. It’s left me deaf.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 02/05/2023 18:15

Yes with those symptoms. Can't be too safe with children

Did you actually do the glass test?! A non-blanching rash = A&E

Have you done the glass test. If it is a non blanching rash I would not be waiting around for out of hours to get back to you.

DaxTornado · 02/05/2023 18:23

They will advuse you to go to a and e. Save time and go now. She has a fever and therefore an infection. With the rash and neck stiffness the infection I would be most worried about is meningitis. Children compensate being very unwell for a long time then quickly deteriorate. I would take her now.

PS glass test for anyone interested

They will send you to a and E. Just go now

QueenSmartypants · 02/05/2023 18:51

I wouldn't even wait, not with those symptoms. Go straight to a&e

hellodarknessmyoldfriend22 · 02/05/2023 18:57

Op have you done the glass test or not?

If it doesn't fade under a glass go to A&E.

Equally this doesnt definitely mean it's meningitis. DD has had a non blanching rash twice and both times it wasn't meningitis

MargaretThursday · 02/05/2023 19:01

As everyone says you need to get checked out.

However the rash is a later symptom of meningitis, so she would be noticeably very ill if she had that rash (ds used to get viral non fading rashes a lot)
With the neck it's noticeably stiff, so see if she can kiss her knee. If she can bend her head to that, it's a good sign.
If she isn't reacting to light (that's ordinary daylight, not bright torch straight in her eye) that's also a good sign.

However, any concern and you'd be best go straight to A&E without waiting for the call back.
If it isn't it can be fairly quickly checked, and if it is, then time is important.

HappyHourStartsNow · 02/05/2023 19:01

I would go now, don’t bother waiting for a call back. If she deteriorates then you will be in the right place or on the way there. If it turns out to be a virus that you don’t need to be too worried about, then you will still have done the right thing. I wouldn’t risk the alternative.

Cam22 · 02/05/2023 19:01

Do not wait. Take your child to A&E now.

ConcernedCatmother · 02/05/2023 19:02

CurlewKate · 02/05/2023 18:05

I think I would. And I am lax to the point of neglect.

It’s not often I laugh out loud but this tickled me.

but YES op

determinedtomakethiswork · 02/05/2023 19:03

I hope she gets seen quickly and that everything is good.

YWP · 02/05/2023 19:05

If you have done the glass test and it disappears then I would wait for the call back / out of hour’s appointment.

If the glass test and it doesn’t disappear I would go to a&e now.

It all hinges on the glass test for me

Duckyneedsaclean · 02/05/2023 19:08

Sorry, yes, I've done the glass test and it nearly entirely fades. Anyway, appointment at 7.45 opposite A&E so in the right place of necessary.

OP posts:
KeyboardMash · 02/05/2023 19:11

Ah! Yes - if it's fading then I think you're fine waiting for that appointment.

OneFrenchEgg · 02/05/2023 19:23

Nope, ds had bacterial meningitis as a baby and they mentioned (as a pp says) the rash is at the point of incredibly serious illness so I'd do 111 if anything.
But you aren't me and your kid isn't my kid so you need to make your own decisions based on the information available to you and your knowledge of your child.

Giselletheunicorn · 02/05/2023 19:24

Yes I think A&E as a precaution. But try not to panic. Lots of viral infections can cause muscle aches and sore necks - lots of lymph glands around chin and neck. And it's possible to get viral rashes as a body's response to any virus. (My DH got one in the winter in response to the coughing virus that's doing the rounds.) fingers crossed it's just a run of the mill crappy bug...

AutumnCrow · 02/05/2023 19:30

Good luck with your appointment, OP. Thinking of you. Flowers

Inkblue · 02/05/2023 19:42

I hope you are getting seen shortly. I had meningitis once and didn’t feel terrible, just a bit fluey. I wanted some time off work because of that but the GP picked it up straight away.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 02/05/2023 19:49

I hope you don't have to wait too long.

Good luck Flowers

Chocolateismyfavourite · 02/05/2023 19:53

Good luck

LysHastighed · 02/05/2023 20:02

Does the rash feel rough? Might be scarlet fever

lljkk · 02/05/2023 20:49

Hope appt went well as it could, OP.

Duckyneedsaclean · 02/05/2023 21:10

Thanks all, definitely not meningitis and she's actually starting to feel better since we got home.

Got to rate the 111 service actually after dragging them in my OP. Called them at about 6pm and we were home after full assessment by 8.15. Must be a quiet day 😄
