It's happened. I've 'had a fall'.

I haven't fallen over in years. I think the last time was holding baby ds and I tried to step over the baby gate, but being young and agile I managed to save ds and most of myself.

Today I was coming back in from the garden and I'm not sure if I missed the step or my foot slid off but I came crashing down like a felled tree, taking the bin with me and almost crushing ddog to death. Most of my weight went on my knee that is very stiff and sore now, as well as a bruised foot and dented pride. It was quite a while before I could get back up again.

I feel a bit weird now and almost, vulnerable? Like I can no longer just spring back up and shake it off. Oh, the joys of getting older 🙄

I've had about 3 falls in the garden in the last 5 years or so and I'm only 45 😂 First time I sprained my ankle so badly it took over 12 months to get better.

YukoandHiro · 01/05/2023 19:30

I fell over the back door step onto both my knees at the end of last year and it took me 3 months to get better - look out for water on the knee, that's what happened to me

BungalowLil · 01/05/2023 19:32

Don't know if you are menopausal, but during my menopause I kept having odd slips and falls...broke a leg and my shoulder on separate occasions. Since the menopause ended I seem to manage to stay upright. I wonder if it's a hormone thing.

Luckydog7 · 01/05/2023 19:33

I feel in this territory at 36, I'm just so unfit and inflexible after the early childrearing years that I have no core strength at all and pull a muscle if I flinch too hard, not even joking.

I'm considering starting a strength training routine to reverse this but struggling to find the time...

Offthexmaslist · 01/05/2023 19:33

I also fell backwards off the back door step at Easter causing partial tear to my MCL (knee ligament) , bruised tailbone and wounded pride. Still hobbling. (Only 62)

Mabelface · 01/05/2023 19:37

Nah, you fell over 😉

YOUNG people fall over. OLD people have a fall 🤣🤣

Countmeout · 01/05/2023 19:42

I think it becomes ‘I’ve had a fall ‘ only at a certain age, mind you that age is flexible I think!

I fell 3 times in the last 10 years, smooth soles of Zara shoes and sandals involved in all of them. I’ve marks on my knees from the first two. I was furious I ruined a pair of merino tights. I nearly fell on holiday last year, I turned round to look behind on a spiral staircase, fortunately jumped down 2 steps and managed to regain my balance. It does shake you up and takes a while to feel safe again doing whatever you were doing.

I’m older than all of you.

Squirrelsnut · 01/05/2023 19:43

If it makes you feel any better, I fell into our pond for no good reason at all.
My friend recently went arse over tit in Silver Street in Cambridge in front of many tourists.

I've fallen over thousands of times in my life (both drunk and sober). This was definitely 'a fall'.

I fell into a boat on holiday last year and went over on my ankle. It still hurts now and it's nearly a year later. I'm 50 and I feel like every time I hurt myself now, it never quite heals

YnysMonCrone · 01/05/2023 19:47

I've found the difference between falling over and having a fall is whether people laugh at you or not. I used to fall over over a lot. I'm now definitely in the having a fall category. Mainly because I'm much fatter than I used to be and less likely to get up easily. I'm 52

Iheartmysmart · 01/05/2023 19:48

I managed to trip over a mat that I’d put down to stop the dog sliding on the laminate floor. Two badly bruised knees and a huge lump on my head from where I hit it on my wardrobe!

Oh and a few months ago I was away with work, walking along the road with a colleague and she fell over. I helped her up with a snigger then fell down the stairs at the hotel the next day.

hoophoophooray · 01/05/2023 19:49

I fell down the stairs over a year ago. My shoulder still isn't quite right. I'm 45...

Mabelface · 01/05/2023 19:50

I'm 53 and won't accept having a fall yet, despite slipping on grass last year, appearing to hover for a moment before landing splat on my back. I'm a youngster, I tell you!

claracluck1978 · 01/05/2023 19:50

I feel your pain

I had a fall at work this week. Tripped over something that I knew was in my way but clearly couldn't lift my clown feet high enough

I'm now sporting a line across my nose and the blackest bruised knees I've ever seen. Oh, and v much hurt pride.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/05/2023 19:56

I Had A Fall in January, and broke my arm. I know exactly what you mean about feeling weird and vulnerable - the world felt like a dangerous place for a bit. I felt at risk just walking around!

It wore off after a while and now I'm back to doing stupid careless shit again.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/05/2023 19:57

I am 55 and have had 2 falls in last 12months, and broke something each time. I feel off kilter and nervous of falling again. Be nice if it is just menopause not old age.

Turtles4543 · 01/05/2023 20:00

Yeah 41. My driveway, in front of teenagers.

Laiste · 01/05/2023 20:00

Flowers OP

It's such a bloody shock hitting the ground as an adult isn't it? (provided you're not someone who falls over regularly in their sport ect)

It's such a long way down and the ground is SO hard and there's no bounce!
My last 3 falls:

I fell off a horse about 12 years ago and broke my coccyx. That was a long way down and as i fell i had to time to wonder what i'd break Shock

Around 8 years ago i fell off a pair of stupid lace up platform sandals in Tesco car park. I went down like a sack of shite and DH had no time to catch me and i'm glad because we'd have both hit the ground. I grazed all my toes really badly and twisted my ankle and it all hurt like FUCK but i pretended it didn't and styled it out.

3rd one was bad and what i'd call 'A Fall'. It was icy and i was coming down a slope outside our house and started to slide. I knew when i got to the bottom i'd fall over and had to chose backwards or forwards. I chose forwards because i was afraid of going back and hitting my head and i had young DD with me. When i fell it was full force onto my knees and Oh My God, they bled and swelled up and i cried. I crawled back up the slope and into the house with little DD4 (aged 5 then) all upset about Mummy Sad

My knees haven't properly recovered. They hurt when it's cold and i can't kneel down on them.

Now when ever it's slippery i walk like a penguin with something stuck up it's arse and clutch at who ever's with me like a nutter 🙄

icebearforpresident · 01/05/2023 20:01

I fell down the stairs between Xmas and new year. I was walking down when one of the kids came into the hall and I stopped about 5 stairs from to talk to her. She walked off and I did as well, forgetting I was on the stairs. We have a turn at the bottom so I put my hand out onto the wall to try and stop myself but it’s all artex so I couldn’t get a good grip and just cut my hand to buggery. Half slipped, half fell and rolled at the bottom into the wall, giving myself a massive bruise on the process. I still feel nervous going down the stairs now. It was definitely ‘a fall’ and I feel like it’s aged me 30-odd years (I’m 37)

junebirthdaygirl · 01/05/2023 20:03

I was on holidays and somehow the sunhat blinded my vision and l fell over an uneven sidewalk. Flat on my face. I was nor hurt except for cut knees which ruined walking around in shorts. But l felt shaken for days after. In my 60s and hadn't fallen since l was a child.

wetpebbles · 01/05/2023 20:05

I tried to hop over a 1 ft fence at the park and didn't lift my foot high enough so went arse over tit in front of a few spectators
