It's happened. I've 'had a fall'.

I haven't fallen over in years. I think the last time was holding baby ds and I tried to step over the baby gate, but being young and agile I managed to save ds and most of myself.

Today I was coming back in from the garden and I'm not sure if I missed the step or my foot slid off but I came crashing down like a felled tree, taking the bin with me and almost crushing ddog to death. Most of my weight went on my knee that is very stiff and sore now, as well as a bruised foot and dented pride. It was quite a while before I could get back up again.

I feel a bit weird now and almost, vulnerable? Like I can no longer just spring back up and shake it off. Oh, the joys of getting older 🙄

I once tripped crossing the road outside work, it was a quiet street, but there was a car coming towards me and I felt so vulnerable being unable to get out of the way or make myself visible. It was fine of course.

I go through phases of having falls. I find if I fall once chances are I will do the same again within weeks.

Several years ago, New Year’s Day in Edinburgh I fell over the low metal railings around Hollyrood House. I lay face down in the mud and could hear my sister shrieking Oh my god that’s my sister. Despite what people might have thought I had drunk one glass of Prosecco that morning and nothing the night before.

Moved house and fell down the stairs with the vacuum cleaner on moving day. Thought I had broken my leg. All I could think was how was I going to manage in my new house with everything packed in boxes. I had a bruised leg for weeks but no break thankfully.

Sympathies to all fellow fallers. I fell over on the street in broad daylight, dry conditions, no frost, sober as a judge, 9 weeks ago. The pavements are very uneven round here, but I've walked down that way hundreds of times, so why I fell that time is a mystery. I think I just mis-stepped and lost my balance. Interesting to see the menopause makes these things worse.

Anyway, I fell heavily onto my left side and broke my little finger, badly. Had to have an operation to screw the bits of bone back together. Still not right. It's going to take months. I feel so stupid!

I've been having falls since my early 40s. I had a brain tumour and it affected my balance. I was clumsy before but these days I can trip over fresh air. Luckily I seem to have bones that are made of steel and apart from my arm once, I don't break. I do bruise however and was taken aside once at work to check everything was ok at home. My poor dh is now paranoid that people will think he's abusing me.

Forgot most recent fall. As I lurched forward I bellowed ‘Oh shit’. Staggered to my feet to meet the glare of a woman whose dog had just done a huge poo on the pavement. She very pointedly got out a bag and picked it up and clearly thought I was being critical of her DDog’s bowel habits. I slunk on my way head bowed feeling sorry I had been born

I had my fall 5 years ago. Was grieving for my mother at the time and not myself. The dog pulled me one way and i went the other, I broke my ankle really badly and had to have surgery. I haven’t been the same since. Wouldn’t think anything of climbing into the attic or up a ladder to change a bulb, it’s weird how nervous it made me!

I slipped on a wet floor at Stratford train station on my 50th birthday. Ruptured my hamstring, and tore my crucial ligaments. I refused to have an ambulance because I was on my way to the ABBA Arena show, but I did end up in A and E the next morning and on crutches lol. I genuinely thought I’d broken my hip to start with.

Really brought it home that I’m on the down hill side now!

I may have fallen over in front of two hundred people. Just to make you feel a bit better, was painful and highly embarrassing, with the result of an enormous bruise.

I've managed to slip and fall twice within a matter of months. The first one was on holiday last year. It was raining so we were all sat inside at the hotel bar. I'd gone out to have a vape in my rubber pool shoes and had gotten the soles of my shoes wet. Came back in and dried my feet on the door mat. Or so I thought. What I hadn't realised was that with all the other people coming in the door mat was now wet through. Stepped onto the tiled floor and went down like a sack of spuds. That wouldn't have been so bad only momentum took me forward and skidded on my knees and face palmed the back of some random guys chair. Of course it had to be the one table that had loads of people sat round it. Second one was about a month ago. Stepped outside onto the decking to have a vape. Again it had been raining so the floor was wet slippery. As soon as my left foot hit the floor it went from under me and I ended up crashing down flat out onto the decking floor. Huge bruise on my left leg just below my knee. Grazed right knee and a bruised right ankle. I lay there whilst my Mum shouts for my Sister to come and help me up. I'm 37 btw! She comes and promptly stands there pissing herself laughing at me.

At what age does "I fell over" turn to "I had a fall"?

Biscuitandacuppa · 02/05/2023 01:15

I twisted my ankle coming down my stairs just over a year ago. I fell down the last 3 steps and broke all of the bones in my ankle. I’m due my third operation this week. Prior to that I was fit and active and loved walking. I now hobble about in a stick. I’m 47 and menopausal. Hoping this operation gives me a bit more mobility and less pain!

I fell when playing with my daughter. We were doing running races in the garden. My foot got stick in a pothole. Falling was a horrible feeling, seemed to take ages, like slow motion. I remember thinking I was going to be able to stop myself but did I heck? Landed face down with force. . I was seeing stars for about 10 mins and bust my lip.

My issue is stairs apparently

Decided to walk down concrete stairs as a child. On roller skates. Broke my coccyx. Pretty sure that's why I developed a massive disc herniation and had emergency spinal surgery

Then age 17 I fell down two flights of stairs that were stairs/platform/stairs, landed sat on my ankle which was facing the wrong way. Broke my ankle, foot and tore all the ligaments

Broke the other ankle and foot getting out of bed a year later, that got me a lot of odd looks in a&e

My dad wasn't happy when I started riding again after my back op, I asked him when I had most badly injured myself and he concluded I was safer on a horse than my own feet BlushGrin
