Please explain to this Texan what gardening is?

Hi there

I know it must be strange to have a Texan on mumsnet but I recently became a “mum” and I’m gender critical so I couldn’t help but be drawn to mumsnet as it’s one of the few places that I can talk and read about both online without being banned. 😂

Something I’ve been noticing as I’ve been lurking here is that I see a lot of comments about gardening and comments with flowers. Usually in support of someone who went through something very rough. It peaked my curiosity.

Can someone explain this and how it started? Is it just on mumsnet that this happens or is it culturally influenced? Maybe a mix of both?

It's a specific 'code' in the feminism forums.
It's against MN rules to ask for money through online fundraising, so links will be deleted.
So 'gardening' is fundraising, hence the metaphors around digging and carrots.
If you know the names of the people seeking financial help for court cases etc, you can find them and donate if you so wish.

Eh? @Beamur

If Beamur is referring to the Gender Critical discussions on the FWR board, then she’s correct 😀

I don't read those boards.

I naively thought the OP was talking about gardening with plants and flowers, and wondered what being gender critical had to do with it.

PaniniHead · 01/05/2023 16:00

The flower is just offering support- like sending flowers to someone.Flowers

Littlebluebird123 · 01/05/2023 16:00

The 💐is to show sympathy. It will appear on other boards too

Fladdermus · 01/05/2023 16:01

I sometimes read those boards and also didn't have a clue. Thought the OP was talking about actual gardening and was trying to figure out why an American wouldn't understand what it was. 😂

🤣🤣🤣 Well you don’t all the desert sand and the hot summers here grass and flowers are a foreign concept! 😩

Just kidding! I live in a forest and I’m quite familiar with gardening! 😁

I also had no idea and was wondering what it meant!

Flowers in sympathy or thanks like Flowers 💐 I would use just to say thank you or to express sympathy though, so it isn't always a code! I'm sure you know that, but wanted to clarify

PieMashLiquor · 01/05/2023 16:13

texan, flowers, gender critical, carrots, gardening?

i'm so missing out!

Astralitzia · 01/05/2023 16:26

It's trying to get round MN's rules on fundraising / soliciting donations with euphemisms like "gardening", "digging", "spades out" instead of "donate to" etc.

I don't know why it isn't clamped down on harder (same goes for other begging threads).

Thatladdo · 01/05/2023 16:52

This went straight over the top of my head! 😆
The abreviation codes that people use are bad enough. DH DC etc etc
Is there an index of these anyware? 😣

OP, I'm Texan too but I have to admit that even I was a tad confused by your opening post. I was scratching my head with "gender critical" gardening. I'm from the desert so I thought that maybe I was missing something.

Anyways, I'll send you a desert 🌵 plant as a greeting 👋🏼

Sorry. I just see a lot of brit’s asking why americans are here and felt the need to explain myself.

They don't need 'clamping down on' as they're not breaking the rules. The rule is against links to fundraising pages, which are too easy for someone to click without due consideration. The 'gardening' etc gives info so that people know there's a cause they might be interested in and can then actively find the relevant site themselves.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/05/2023 17:39

The other thing that isn't obvious to new members is that (to prevent spamming) links to petitions can only exist on the Petitions and Activism board - it's worth taking a look at from time to time.

Like most people, I presumed your post was about gardening - you now, making the land around your home either beautiful with flowers, shrubs and lawns or growing fruit and vegetables to eat.

If you want to talk about stuff on the feminism boards, it is a whole other world with other language, so probably worth keeping on that boards so the rest of us can keep it in our list of hidden topics.

We only allow fundraising for registered charities to be promoted on our Talk boards - and these threads should be posted on the charities noticeboard. This is in the interest of protecting our users as we aren't able to vouch for or endorse individuals running crowdfunding campaigns or anything along those lines.

It's not about posting links.
