Please explain to this Texan what gardening is?

Hi there

I know it must be strange to have a Texan on mumsnet but I recently became a “mum” and I’m gender critical so I couldn’t help but be drawn to mumsnet as it’s one of the few places that I can talk and read about both online without being banned. 😂

Something I’ve been noticing as I’ve been lurking here is that I see a lot of comments about gardening and comments with flowers. Usually in support of someone who went through something very rough. It peaked my curiosity.

Can someone explain this and how it started? Is it just on mumsnet that this happens or is it culturally influenced? Maybe a mix of both?

I don't know why it isn't clamped down on harder (same goes for other begging threads)

How totalitarian!

You're free to keep your oar out of any thread that doesn't meet your approval

I don't set MNs talk guidelines...

There was me wondering if Americans had a completely different word for gardening - sidewalk/pavement situation - and wondering what it might be Grin

Or report threads of course, as I do. As anyone can, if ever they feel the need.

Haha, I get it! We've got American friends living in the UK. They have a massive deck, with plain green grass around it - nothing else. They say they're doing "yard work" instead of "gardening".
British people - traditionally - take immense pride in the appearance of their homes and gardens. This is changing now unfortunately as young people can't afford to buy.
We also have great weather for plants to grow - temperate, with a mix of sun and lots of rain.
We also have the Victorian influence, with precisely planted gardens and specimen plants from around the world.
'Gardening' is the pastime of constantly tinkering about with your outdoor space - trying to get your collection of plants and flowers to look just so 👌
You might have a colour scheme or theme - ours is lightly 'Victorian British tropical'. And I want white, purple, pink and red flowers only - no yellow!
So we mess around with it constantly - removing weeds, adding compost to improve the quality of the soil, moving plants around, buying plants, removing plants that aren't working. It's a full time job, TOTALLY pointless, and makes me very happy.
Oh, and Btitish people typically love to attract wild birds and feed them too!

I see the OP's post went completely over my head and I've written an essay on actual 'gardening'! 😄

So, I had completely missed the specific use of this on the Gender Critical boards. BUT in the US, gardening does tend to mean working on the vegetable patch - so, if someone asks you, "Do you have a garden" or, more usually, "Did you plant a garden?" they mean vegetables.
What people in the UK call "gardening", working on the flower beds and the lawn, are described as "yard work." And this doesn't mean a "yard" like we would mean - a small, often paved area at the back of the house - it just means a UK garden.

Ive often wondered this, I got the gist it was something to do with money but had no idea why it was called gardening/carrots/digging etc etc

I thought it was just more of the bullshit stupid names people use on this site

So why is it not ok to talk about fundraising?
