I can hear a clock ticking but don't own one?!

A few nights ago I was lay and could hear ticking, I put sleep music on to drown it out.

Just sat on the bed to chill a minute and can hear it again.

I don't own a clock or a watch.

I can't find where its coming from. It's driving me mad!

DS has a watch but it's in his room!

This is a super niche suggestion, but have you left a can of fizzy drink open in your room somewhere? I've done that before and it drove me mad trying to work out what the ticking sound was!

anunlikelyseahorse · 01/05/2023 14:32

Do you live in an old house? Could be deathwatch beetle. They use a 'ticking' sound to attract a mate.

ArcticLadybird · 01/05/2023 14:32

Is it a timer that you have put on a plug for lights when you’re out?
the central heating timer or radiators and pipes clicking?
Could be a slight vibration in a window frame?

I had this...thought I was going mad, but it turned out it was a security light on the wall outside that had blown a bulb. It stopped when I turned it off at the wall.

antidisestablishmentarianism · 01/05/2023 14:33

Water meter? Mine ticks like mad, you could have a slight leak

Goodfuckingriddance · 01/05/2023 14:35

Tinnitus?

LobsterBiscuit · 01/05/2023 14:35

A bottle upside down on the draining board. Mine tick until I let the water out

Whywere · 01/05/2023 14:35

Yep deathwatch beetle for sure

djivdfj · 01/05/2023 14:37

I have deathwatch beetle in my house and recorded it tapping yesterday if you want to hear

MeinKraft · 01/05/2023 14:37

Have you ever seen Stranger Things? It's probably just Vecna.

I do, I do!!

NannyR · 01/05/2023 14:38

Where is your sons watch? If I leave mine face down on a shiny surface it seems to amplify the tick and make it really loud, if I turn it over or put it on something soft, you can't hear it at all.

Maybe a form of tinnitus - I get this occasionally but it's a running water/bubbling sound.

djivdfj · 01/05/2023 14:40

Anyone know how to post an audio file?

Heartsnrainbows · 01/05/2023 14:40

Check the fireplace. Might be a horse.

SmokyForTheWin · 01/05/2023 14:42

Do not watch The Girl in the Fireplace Doctor Who episode!

Strawbag · 01/05/2023 14:44

You're about to receive a side quest.

GhostOfABanana · 01/05/2023 14:58

Non of the above. It 100% sound like a clock!

DS watch is on his wrist and downstairs now. I've pulled everything out from under the bed. It's driving me mad.

Pulled a few kids in and they agree watch but aren't invested enough to help me.

Dripping tap?

djivdfj · 01/05/2023 15:08

Here is the sound of deathwatch beetle for anyone who wants it.

I hope you find out what it is op. Doesn't sound like it is this

GhostOfABanana · 01/05/2023 15:33

Mystery solved.

DS2 bought a watch from a charity shop, realised its a woman's watch when he googled it, so put it in my makeup bag (?!) as he thought I'd want it 😂

At least I'm not bug infested or crazy!

I have this - mine is caused by tinnitus. It stops and starts to suit itself and reminds me of the wind up timex watch I had as a child.

That's nice of him Smile

GhostOfABanana · 01/05/2023 18:09

It is nice isn't it. He's a sweet boy. I'm not a watch person but I'll be sure to wear it a few times.

It's loud!
