Living in their house and walking dogs twice a day. Must stay overnight but free to go during the day. Not London! (He's 23 with a desperate check and he's training as a physio)

My son recently moved into our friends’ house for 4 nights to look after the dog and cats overnight. I did the walks. She left him £200, plus food and beer. I thought that was highly generous

9pm to 9am at min wage plus 30 per walk.
I would make that 180

It's not about it being hard work though, it's his time. It's time that he can't do other things with or do other work in

You can't expect someone to stay in your house for 17hrs a day plus walk your dogs and pay them minimal money

This is (imho) totally ridiculous.

OK well according to our local Rover app the cheapest for an overnight and two walks would be about 70, so no, 30 is not reasonable.

Yeah he's not expecting that 😅 I think he'd have been OK with 50 a day tbh.

Friend charges £35 a day per dog. Discounted to £30 for multiple dogs. So for 3 it would be £90

cansu · 01/05/2023 15:35

Many young people would be happy to have their own place for a while. If it doesn't suit him then fine but she is hardly likely to pay him the same as someone who has insurance etc.

Insurance yes I can see that, but it's hardly a taxing job that you need training in! He's qualified in human first aid and has a biology degree plus 18 months of physiotherapy training so I think he'd cope with a poorly dog (he's also had dogs and horses all his life)

It would cost a lot more than £30 a day for 3 dogs in kennels. You might pay £30 per dog per day in some places. Average price (according to Google) for an in home sitter is between £20-27 per dog per day.
Dog sitting rates are generally higher. Average around £10 per hour and overnight rates between £30 and £70 per night

Wonford · 01/05/2023 15:38

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/05/2023 15:36

Exactly.

He has his own place. It's not that exciting for him to sit watching Netflix in someone else's house so that's not a draw.

How much of time will be be actually working vs sitting on his phone? 2x walks + 2 meals = 4 hours total? Living wage x no of hours actual work seems fair.

So £30 is low. ~£45 seems about right for 3 dogs and 4 hours of effort.

Did your friend manage to get someone else to do it for £30??

OK great. Presumably these people getting paid 30 aren't vets? So their emergency procedures would consist of ringing a vet and taking the dog there if need be?

Don't know, she's not replied.

Well it depends on what people value. Me personally having seen too much go wrong, unless the 'untrained' was half the cost of a professional I'd rather pay the latter.

But if it's a friend I'd find it odd to charge. It would on a favour returning basis, as I too have pets...

Floralnomad · 01/05/2023 15:42

@Wonford what was your friend actually offering to pay ?

VeggieSalsa · 01/05/2023 15:43

I pay family £30 per night for 1 dog. I can get a professional to do it for £40 per night.

Most people do it alongside another job, your son has to sleep somewhere and he can do what he wants in the day so £30 is not entirely unreasonable.
