Do you still use a pan filled with oil to fry chips?

Or maybe you've got one of those deep fat fryers that would sit on the side filled with rancid old oil (although I'm remembering my grandmas here and maybe they wasn't the norm with them!)

Anyway, with the rise in popularity of air fryers I wondered if anyone still did stuff the 'old fashioned' way?

I've never cooked chips in anything other than the oven or an airfryer

My grandma does

NeatCompactSleeper · 01/05/2023 12:53

Air fryer all the way.

I hate oven chips with a passion.

NeatCompactSleeper · 01/05/2023 12:54

And I know an air fryer is a mini oven, but chips taste completely different from them 😁

We have a deep fat fryer sat on the side. It is NOT filled with rancid old oil. In fact, the oil was only changed last week.

I don't have an air fryer. I'm not convinced we need one. I didn't realise that was an old fashioned point of view, to me it's the norm.

Amandasummers · 01/05/2023 12:56

I do them in a pan on the hob sometimes

PuttingDownRoots · 01/05/2023 12:56

Mu parents still have their chip pan, used on a gas hob. The chips are nice...

But they recently got an Air fryer and they do seem to be switching.

MarinatemysoulinSprite · 01/05/2023 12:56

Yes.

Oven chips are mostly horrible (Lidl's Rustique are the exception)

Don't own an air fryer or a rancid deep fat fryer

TooOldForThisNonsense · 01/05/2023 12:56

No, occasionally my husband will deep fry chips in a relatively small amount of oil but no rancid chip pan or deep fat fryer.

7Worfs · 01/05/2023 12:57

Nope.
I do chips in the oven, just potatoes and olive oil.
Not all potatoes are tasty enough to be eaten without salt/spices though.

Also the temp producing the tastiest results is 160 (fan) for 30-ish mins.

IHeartGeneHunt · 01/05/2023 12:57

I have a pan with oil and a basket but it certainly isn't rancid.

Although similar in set up, how they cook food is very different as the hot air is at high speed as it moves past the food being cooked.

They’re a brilliant idea, absolutely love ours!

W0tnow · 01/05/2023 12:58

Nana used to deep fry chips in (not rancid) tallow. They were delicious. I’m old enough to remember the fish and chip shop doing the same. 😋

toastofthetown · 01/05/2023 12:59

I don’t, but my dad occasionally makes chips in a pan with oil and they are divine. I have an acceptable oven chip recipe but nothing can compare to properly cooked deep fried chips. If he replaced it with oven (air fryer) chips I’d be gutted. No rancid oil either…

Magnalux · 01/05/2023 12:59

I’ve a deep fat fryer too .. I keep it in the utility room. It has a function that drains and filters the oil after use. I hate oven chips !

EversoDisorganised · 01/05/2023 13:01

I have never deep fried chips in my whole life. My parents got rid of their chip pan when oven chips were invented. I agree oven chips aren’t the same, but there are some that are pretty good (usually the French fries). Or I make homemade wedges in the oven. I enjoy proper fried ones when we eat out, its a proper treat.

PinkPlantCase · 01/05/2023 13:01

We’ve never done this. We just cook the chips in the oven.

PinkPlantCase · 01/05/2023 13:02

We don’t buy oven chips for it. We chop up the potatoes and put them in the oven with oil and seasoning

BatFaceOwl · 01/05/2023 13:02

I just recall the oil being almost black!! And don't think she ever did them on the hob now I think about it - just a huge big deep fat fryer on the side in her kitchen

The chips were delicious though tbf. Nothing beats a chip fried in oil really.

The thought of boiling oil in a hob makes me nervous though - accident waiting to happen in my mind

I don’t make chips at home, wedges yes (in the oven) but I don’t even bother to try to replicate proper fried chips. We just have them when out instead.

Fudgewomble · 01/05/2023 13:07

Never deep fry chips (in pan or fryer), nor did I grow up with deep fried chips nor did any member of my family cook chips like this.

I saw one of DD’s friends mother use a stand alone deep fryer in her kitchen and I was open jawed in amazement. I’ve obviously lived a sheltered life!

HydrangeaFairy · 01/05/2023 13:08

I would never eat chips if they were not deep fried. Oven chips are horrible. I do have an air fryer but never for chips.
I have a deep fat fryer, the oil is changed frequently and it goes in the dishwasher. There's no substitute for proper chips.

ComputerInitiateJump · 01/05/2023 13:09

We used to have a chip pan filled with lard. It just sat on the hob. I'm not sure how often the lard was changed. The chips were anazing. I used to help by cutting them using a crinkle cutter. Mum used to chuck sausages in with the chips too. God knows how I'm still alive.

ScottBakula · 01/05/2023 13:09

I use a chip pan too, I don't like oven chips.
I empty the pan and filter the oil after each use.

Needmorelego · 01/05/2023 13:14

We usually do oven chips but when our oven broke recently my husband did me some fish fingers and chips in a frying pan with oil.
Best fricking fish fingers and chips I've had since since my mother stopped using the deep fat fryer in circa 1995.

WallabyWay · 01/05/2023 13:17

No. I was a '90s child and I'm still traumatised by all the 999 episodes, news reports and PIF about chip pan fires.
