Prefect cup of tea

Ok boring I know but how do you make a perfect cup of tea? Do you for example use loose or tea bags , straight from kettle or a teapot?
I put a tea bag in with my milk and then add the hot water and let it sit for a few seconds as I do not like it too strong. Ohh also has to be typhoo not flavoured stuff for me.

I do like tea in a pot, but not always practical and I spend an awful lot of my time at work.
So here's how I have it at work (and when I travel, I take my own tea bags!)
Freshly boiled water! Twinnings extra strong tea bags (1886, dark red box)
Give it 3-4 mins stir it up a bit, squeeze it out, bit of milk and done!

CherryogDog · 30/04/2023 08:50

Yorkshire tea bag, just boiled water. I tend to bash the tea bag rather than let steep.
Splash of semi skimmed milk.
Drink whilst hot, lukewarm tea doesn't taste the same.
But the most important thing is tea must be drunk from a bone china cup, cheap mugs are only for coffee in my house.
I come from a family of non stop tea drinkers.
But I had to stop drinking tea at my Dad's when he started using the water from his hot water bottle to make a pot of tea 🤑

Yorkshire teabag. Water. Leave for a couple of minutes. Remove tea bag. Add oat milk.

The "perfect cup of tea" has so many factors like environment, time of day, purpose. Is it to help with a cold, or bad news, for breakfast, for sitting out in the afternoon whilst on holiday, the iced version on a hot summer's afternoon, evening cuppa, etc., we have a cupboard full of tea!

ichundich · 30/04/2023 09:02

Absolute sacrilege to add the milk to the hot water straight away; it means the tea won't brew properly as the temperature is too low. I make the (IMO) perfect cup of tea by pouring fresh boiling water into a teapot with two or three good quality, fresh bags in. Milk has too be skimmed and not too much of it. I've recently even gone back to no milk and adding sugar instead when out and about because so many people ruin tea by adding too much milk to tea that is weak.

Qilin · 30/04/2023 09:08

Yorkshire tea leaves
Warm teapot
Scoop of leaves into warmed pot
Freshly boiled water onto the leaves (never re-boiled water)
Leave for a few minutes
Pour into cup or mug
As tea is in teapot can ad milk before or after - after unless you've used the mug before and know how much to put in!
Rinse our the teapot after use with hot water to ensure ready for next drink

OnYerBikeSteve · 30/04/2023 09:15

Teapot. Always a teapot, even if it's just me.

Warm pot, two Yorkshire Gold tea bags, boiling water, four minutes brewing, then tea, milk, and a final splash of tea so the first sip isn't too cooled by the milk.

SwedishEdith · 30/04/2023 09:26

Agree that needs a china mug.
Hate milky tea.
2-3 minutes when made in a teapot but that's too long for me if in a cup - the tea: water ratio isn't right.
Needs to be drunk when really hot. Once it starts to cool, I can taste the milk and it's horrible.
No sugar.

Lx9ee2 · 30/04/2023 09:32

I am a milk first person 😂which I know is taboo haha
but for me, I either do looseleaf tea in a small teapot that has a strainer attached ( I find loose leaf stronger than bags), or I have a standard teapot without a strainer and I use that

I do like to brew for longer though ☕

Housewife2010 · 30/04/2023 09:33

Always always use a pre warmed tea pot. Tea brewed in a mug is rank.

Surely2023IsTheYearForMyRainbowBaby · 30/04/2023 13:47

Teabag and boiling hot water in first. Give it a stir and let it mash for a few mins before adding the milk. Teabag wise either Yorkshire or twinnings but I don't mind own brands either

FrogsWormsandButterflies · 30/04/2023 22:22

I forget to add to my description:

Tea is always Assam, I HATE Yorkshire tea which I know is an unpopular opinion.
I only drink tea form the biggest, chunkiest mug as well.

ChicagoBears · 30/04/2023 22:24

Yorkshire tea bag in a cup. Hot water poured in, 1 sugar. Strain tea after 30 seconds of stirring. Dash (and I mean a dash) of milk.

Diversion · 30/04/2023 22:28

Yorkshire tea bag, freshly boiled water, leave to steep for a couple of minutes, stir the bag around and squeeze a bit, add a little semi skimmed milk. Has to be in one of my favourite mugs. Drink and repeat.

IloveJudgeJudy · 01/05/2023 09:27

Has to be in a china cup/mug. Different teas for different times of day. Clipper first thing, Assam mid-morning. Ceylon in the afternoon/early evening.

LooksLikeImStuckHere · 01/05/2023 09:46

Large mug. M&S Gold, never milk first. I don’t mind tea bags staying in if it’s a pot but otherwise, it’s squeeze three times then straight out.

Skimmed milk, colour of He Man.

I love how everyone has a slightly different take on a perfect cup of tea.

Goodfuckingriddance · 01/05/2023 09:53

It's so interesting that the end goal is a cup of tea and all the different methods we have to get to it 😁

For me it's a nice well balanced to hold mug. Freshly boiled water. Twinnings decaf everyday teabag (used to be assam tea but i have heart arrhythmia and have to be caffeine free now - twinnings are the best decaf i've found). Freshly boiled water into mug brew for 2/3 mins - give it a good squeeze and then a good amount of skimmed milk. Really prefer skimmed milk in my tea. When i was dairy free for my baby i used a combo of cashew & oat milk to get a similar result.

Housewife2010 · 01/05/2023 10:34

We have the perfect tea pot too. It's an ancient 50s one that my husband inherited from his grandmother. It is metal with a hinged lid, so no more smashed lids or lids falling in the pot. Also it has a wooden handle so no more trying to lift a very hot handle with the help of a tea cosy or oven glove. We always warm the pot and have a fabulous tea cosy too.
We have a tiny teapot too which is perfect for a single mug. .

caringcarer · 01/05/2023 10:41

I use boiling water and teabag into bone china teapot, and leave for 3 minutes before pouring. Use a bone china cup. I use a matching bone china small milk jug and pour the milk in last. Don't forget to put tea cosy on the teapot.

Lampzade · 01/05/2023 10:42

Only English Breakfast tea
Add teabag to boiling water in mug. Cover mug with saucer to allow the tea to brew for three to five mins.
Add milk and sugar
NEVER put milk first

PrincessHoneysuckle · 01/05/2023 11:06

Nothing to contribute as I think most people would be embarrassed by my tea making skills (not British by birth). I’m self conscious enough about it that I just invite guests to make their own so I don’t fuck it up!

But this thread reminded me: dh’s granddad, bless him, who was naturally very frugal, fought in WWII, grew up a farmer, used to boil his eggs in the kettle and then re-use the water for tea. Blergh 🤢 When we went to stay with him, we were all always trying to discreetly empty and re-fill the kettle.
