Staycation - what have I forgotten to pack?

Myself, DH and Ddog are off on a staycation on Monday for 4 nights. We are staying in a self catering lodge with a hot tub. We plan on eating breakfast every day and dinner one night in the lodge and have bought the food for that.

I am almost packed but please give me suggestions of something I may have forgotten?

@nutella8 good idea, the last place I stayed had terribly squeaky door hinges so it might come in handy this time

Paper plates and cups for the last day breakfast so you don’t have to wash up. Travel snacks, slippers or cosy socks, marshmallows or snacks for around the fire if you have one, book/board games/cards/dog toy, tea towel, favourite mug/cup/glass, suncream, sunglasses/hat. Second or third the cosy throws for evening.

If you're going away, it's n to a staycation.

Rosula · 30/04/2023 10:12

Agh, "not a staycation", not that gibberish.

You're going on a holiday, not a staycation. But I hope you have a lovely time 😊

That's what I came on to say. You don't pack anything for a staycation because you're staying at home.

A decent knife and potato peeler

I actually spent a few minutes ‘umming and ahing’ regarding the title of my post because I couldn’t be sure whether the correct wording was ‘what have I forgotten to pack’ or ‘what have I forgot to pack’ and I couldn’t be bothered with people commenting to correct me. If only I knew people would be so caught up on the word staycation! I have never known of the term staycation to mean staying at home and doing day trips in the area… but thanks to the many people who have commented on the thread to correct me! (Despite either use of the term being correct)

Anyway, I can’t believe I didn’t think to pack a throw! I love being cosy so have packed one now

Depending how well equipped it is, I would consider taking a small plastic shower mat for inside the shower and a bath mat for outside the shower

lopsidedgrin · 30/04/2023 12:07

How ick are the pp's fixating on the word staycation?! Eww. Just tell her what she might have missed and get on with your life.
Have fun OP! Sounds like a lovely break :)

Before the pandemic, a 'staycation' meant, as others have said, staying at home but taking time off work and doing touristy things in your local area. It's only gained the meaning of 'going on holiday in the country where you live' since Covid, and it gained that meaning because people who would usually go abroad for every holiday (especially journalists and celebrities) started to use it to mean holidaying in the UK. And the reason that more recent usage is disliked by many is that it implies that if you are one of the many families who for financial, environmental or other reasons only ever holiday in the UK, your holiday has now been downgraded to a 'staycation', with the associated implication that it's somehow not a 'proper' holiday if you aren't travelling abroad. So the newer meaning is seen as snobbish or elitist by some.

This, and it's just a clumsy and misleading word to use when everyone would understand the word "holiday" and it has none of the ambiguity

Using the newer definition, we have 'staycationed' for the last 14 years. Funny, kinda felt like being on holiday 😏🤐

We have a self-catering box - can opener that we can actually use; scrubber for washing up; WD-40 and gaffer tape (fixes things either way); etc.
