Hi all,
I'm making my son's birthday cake today. I purchased the icing weeks in advance, thought I was being organised and I've just had a huge panic and realised I probably don't have enough.

I purchased 1kg of Sugarpaste baby blue.
The cake will be 8 inch and round. 3 layers. Estimating around 5 inch I'm height.

I'm having a huge panic as I'm super stressed, have lots to do (and a crap partner), alongside a 3 year old. I've looked online and nowhere seems to stock the sugarpaste icing. O can't order online as it won't arrive today.

What do I do? Is it best to just buy a standard supermarket white and mix it with the baby blue sugarpaste? Will it work? It'll hopefully just make the blue a bit lighter which is better than not enough icing! So mad with myself.

What is sugar paste? Fondant icing? Is there a reason you don’t want normal supermarket fondant?

I’d get a white and a blue supermarket and mix them in. Or just use supermarket.

Oh no, sympathies, it’s horrible not having enough icing. Yes you could knead together some white but it would have to be thoroughly blended. You could also buy some paste colour and dye the white blue then mix it in so it doesn’t make it too pale. Or just do the whole thing white with some blue parts/detail

Sugarpaste it's a brand of icing. I believe it is just better than normal supermarket icing as it stretches better etc (so the cake making groups say).

Is this fondant? You can buy white and colour with blue food colouring.

User0610139736 · 29/04/2023 12:00

Or see if there’s a sugar paste stockist anywhere but that might be more stressful

Nomoreminieggs · 29/04/2023 12:01

I do have food colouring. Ideally I want to use the 1kg I've already bought as it's a decent brand and meant to be more pliable.

I don't even know how I'll need this icing. 1kg of rock solid icing! I could knock someone out with it.

Hobbycraft generally stock icing if you have one nearby?

Quitelikeacatslife · 29/04/2023 12:04

A standard 8inch cake will be about 800g so you probably will have enough. I'd go for it, get couple of crumb coat s on, nice and smooth and chill well before you put fondant on. I'd buy a lovely matching ribbon to go round bottom, maybe a wide one, so if there was a little gap it would be hidden (looks pretty too and saves faffing ) can someone pop to get that for you?

Nomoreminieggs · 29/04/2023 12:04

I've looked at hobbcraft online and they don't seem to have the brand I want, also an hour and a half round trip.
I think I'll hav eto get supermarket white and hope for the best 😭😭

You will have plenty of icing for that size of cake. You just need to roll it out. I do loads of xmas cakes that are quite tall and an 8inch tin and have plenty left over when using a lump of fondant that weight. Without it being too thin and tearing.

A tip, if you have a silicon mat, roll out icing on there, it means you don't have it sticking to worktop or need to use icing sugar.

SpeckledlyHen · 29/04/2023 12:07

Regards to kneading it, I often tear it into two smaller bits and start working and kneading it then amalgamate together once softer.

Quitelikeacatslife · 29/04/2023 12:08

It will knead up just fine, 1kg will be enough I'm sure . Use cornflour on your hands and surfaces , it's easier than icing sugar and can brush it off
Here are a couple of links to prove it, even allowing for another inch of height

Before setting off in the car why don't you knead it and roll it out and then drape over the empty cake tin to show you that it will be enough?

Great advice, it will be enough. Make sure you squidge it back up and triple wrap it before you are ready to do cake.

Supermarket icing is fine it won't be as good quality and it will take a lot of kneading in to get them to mix (it can be done? Unless you fancy a marbled effect which is actually lovely.

WhatsitWiggle · 29/04/2023 12:16

If it's not enough, get some white fondant but DON'T mix it in. Instead, roll a ball of white and flatten it with your hands. Then roll out your blue to a bit thicker than you need. Place the white in the middle and roll the combo to the size you need. The underneath will stay blue.

CatOnTheChair · 29/04/2023 12:48

One, 8 inch cake?
Or 3 x 8 inch cakes?

First one, you have plenty.
Second one, you don't have enough - but could do the middle (or top) cake in white.

I read this as one cake with 3 layers being that it is 5 inches tall. There should be plenty of icing with probably 1/3rd or more left over.

10 seconds in the microwave.

Cut in quarters and knead till soft then put together and knead. I never do a massive block in one go!

Garman · 29/04/2023 12:52

Just buy a supermarket brand and mix it with it, it’s fine. Throw the icing in the microwave for a few seconds beforehand to soften it. I can cover an 8 inch cake with about 800g of sugarpaste but that’s about a 4 inch high cake and rolled out pretty thin, so you shouldn’t need much extra mixed with the blue. Use gel colouring if adding colour not liquid.

DoeRayMe · 29/04/2023 12:53

Pretty sure a kilo will be enough anyways

FinallyHere · 29/04/2023 12:56

I wouldn't risk blending.

How about just covering the top and wrapping a ribbon around the 'up stand' part of the cake?

DappledThings · 29/04/2023 12:57

Supermarket icing is fine.
