Can a new build be haunted? (Warning woo related thread, if you don’t like it please don’t post)

So genuine question. I live in a new build house. No one else has lived in the house before, no one’s died in it.

We have motion sensor activated lights in the hallway upstairs and on stairs. A few times now I will notice a light coming from upstairs and thinking I have left a light on go up to discover the motion sensor lights has been activated in one end of the hallway (I have swapped the lights around to see if they are faulty and it’s always the same area they come on in the hallway)

I don’t have any pets (well none that walk around the house freely) and have been in the house alone when this has happened. It also seems to happen late at night. Like between midnight and 3am.

So that’s the only physical evidence I have. The other things I experience in the house are hearing noises, sounds like someone walking in the house (I usually put it down to neighbours) and generally just feeling uncomfortable on the landing, sort of feeling as though I’m being watched and a general heavy sort of feeling in that space (I’m not someone who scares easy).

Anyone else experience anything like that in a new build?

(Again I know this is a woo thread, If you don’t believe please don’t be rude to others that do or me)

Can a new-build be haunted? Yes, if they only moved the headstones.

@givemecoffeenow there was a quite dire series about haunted apartments that had been converted from an asylum it had Gemma Chan in I did enjoy it though it was kind of terrible.

I rented a very small cute looking house that was about a decade old when I relocated. We had one day to find a house so was a quick decision. That house had me on my toes as felt watched and something hit under the sofa one day, like a huge punch. I woke up one night and someone was sitting on the bed staring. They were wearing large looking glasses. We were buying a house so moved out shortly. Years later I mentioned to a local friend and she said a factories had been on that site when she was a little girl.

I grew up in an almost 200 year old house that should have been haunted and also rented an utterly grim old terrace in Birmingham when I was a student. That cute new house made me uneasy.

I would first check all the possible rational explainations:

  • is there something wrong wit the electric system? (new-built are not always done with a good level of workmanship...). You might have changed the lights but if the wiring/motion sensor itself is faulty this will keep on happening
  • is there a timer somewhere that you are not aware of?
  • Do you have a loft/storage space on the roof where you could have a trapped bird/rodent of some kind making the noise?
  • is there an underground train line you might not be aware of the could cause vibration?
  • new builts take a while to ''settle'' and it is normal to have some very small movements to the structure happening.

Once you gave investigated all this, maybe look at the history of the land it is built on for clues.

I had all sort of weird things happening in the country home where I lived as a child but I believe it was just the deep unhappiness of the people living there (I grew up in a toxic environment) that was bringing this on.

So done some investigating today, did manage to catch my neighbour as he was leaving the house. He’s an older guy who’s lived in the town his whole life so picked his brains and asked if he remembered what this land was before the new houses were hilt on it. He told me it’s mostly been woodlands and open fields for as long as he’s known it (he used to play there as a boy) He said there was an old house but that wasn’t where our houses were. And the spot where our houses have been built used to be just woodland.

I asked if there was anything bad that he knew of that’s happened here and he did say there have been a few people who would come to the woods to commit suicide 😫

So I mentioned to my partner about the lights. Fully expecting him to just be dismissive of it. And he says oh it’s probably just the cat???

So I’m like we don’t have a cat 🤨… and he then tells me when he first moved in (before he met me) he had a cat who unfortunately got ran over in a nearby busy road. Apparently he used to love sleeping in the hallway the exact spot the lights come on. And after he died my partner saw the cat once in the corner of his eye running along that hallway…

So is it a ghost cat? 🤔

Also the sensor lights are the rechargeable kind stuck onto the skirting board on magnetic strips. They are not connected to the main electric system in the house at all. I have swapped the lights before wondering if a few are a bit dodgy or something but it doesn’t make a difference. The lights still come on in the same spot.

It’s not something that’s happening that frequently to be fair. But it’s strange when it happens.

I might try and set up a motion activated camera there and see what happens. Anyone got any recommendations for cameras to catch ghosts?

Just to add a less haunted suggestion- often at night spiders walk by camera and set off my motion sensor out front but I can usually see them on the footage.

It’s possible. I hate spiders. I think I would rather a ghost cat.

Ghosts aren't real.

CurlewKate · 29/04/2023 18:26

I find it fascinating that so many logical explanations have been offered, but the OP is ignoring them all. She WANTS it to be ghosts!

givemecoffeenow · 30/04/2023 08:17

I’m not ignoring the other suggestions at all, I don’t know where you got that idea from.

The only thing I have said is not possible is the theory of electrics being a factor due to the lights being rechargeable and rodents due to the fact that I keep my house very clean and would have noticed signs of mice. (Also DP checked the attic and no one is in there… Thankfully as that was truly a horrific thought)

I have said it’s possible it might be a spider.

Im just keeping an open mind is all…

Yes, definitely.

stbrandonsboat · 30/04/2023 09:05

What you need is another cat then any future occurrences can just be attributed to said cat 🐱🥰

sashh · 30/04/2023 11:42

A ghost cat? How cute.

Haha yeah I don’t know if it’s possible for pets to be ghosts, but why not I suppose?

I find the idea of it being a cat less frightening than the thought of some random human ghost lurking in the hallway though.

We live in what was once an old Victorian asylum, lots going on and often feel a heavy presence, neighbours footsteps on the stairs when they're not at home etc, dogs won't go past a certain point in the grounds at night which is apparently where there are lots of unmarked graves. I kept getting a funny feeling in the corner of the quad when I moved here, suddenly cold and as though lots of eyes were on me, and when I looked in the library that spot was where the old mortuary was. And before I moved here I'd never have believed in any of that. When I'm in the bath at night, there's an extra tor fan and I can often hear children's voices and what seems to be an old radio throughout the the walls. But no other children live here and my adjoining neighbours are often away on business. It's very odd. I hope you find out what it is. You could try talking to them, sounds daft but apparently if you are quite firm with them and tell you to leave them alone, the "activity" often subsides. I used to often wake to feel the pressure of a hand on my chest, so I was breathless, odd little things like that.

everandneverending · 30/04/2023 16:38

I live in a new build , only person to live here and have had many spirit encounters like tv, laptop, stereo come on in night, have seen white mist moving across one room and a lampshade explode off the side right in my sight photo taken a dive many times always same picture even though never the one next to it, champagne glass snap itself in half and a wine glass slide off the side and smash, lights that were off I'd come home and back on! Also in a new build as a child and woke to a noises in my ear like a hairdryer and it woke me up and I felt a pressure over my duvet and it lifted off me as I opened my eyes !!

I used to live near a place called Cotford, on the way to Exmoor. Beautiful little village. Mostly little new builds.... I used to feel a chill driving through it. Found out ages after that the whole village was built on a previous mental facility (along the lines of bedlam).
However this could have been my ex winding me up.... but lots of my friends who lived there saw or experienced unexplained events.....
Do love a spooky story 👻🎃🤡

Yes the house's were built in the grounds of a psychiatric hospital. There is still the main building up.

Twospaniels · 30/04/2023 18:02

Our house is 19 yrs old, but was new build when we bought it.
We regularly hear ‘foot steps’ going across daughter’s room upstairs, but no-one is there.
There’s also a loud click that we have never found the source of.
However, these are most likely to be to do with the heating / hot water pipes etc
Oh and the kitchen TV turns itself on sometimes with no-one being near it.

Missingmyusername · 30/04/2023 18:11

👻spooky! Glad I’m reading this now and not the middle of the night as I’m a total scaredy cat!

DM used to say that when I was little, I would talk to someone in my bedroom. She asked who it was and I replied an old lady. I wouldn’t tell her anything else though, no name nothing!

Could someone be living in your home without you knowing and coming out at night?

Really? REALLY? 😂

Midnightstar76 · 30/04/2023 18:15

I personally do think it can as it depends what existed there before.

FourTeaFallOut · 30/04/2023 18:17

A ghost cat...and all the birds and mice it killed for sport.
