Buying bread from bakers

I just passed a bakery shop that I'm not normally near and went in as they had lovely looking bread in window. Man infront of me paid then my turn. Woman went to window picked bread with her bare hands. I said something about the fact she'd just taken money from a previous customer and was now handling bread and she said "we're allowed to".

I left the shop.

Does anyone else feel this is a step backwards? We were all so paranoid over the past couple of years re keeping things clean and now this "is allowed".

'We're allowed to'??? That makes it OK then! 😯

ALongHardWinter · 28/04/2023 15:06

Sorry posted that too soon! I had a similar experience quite a few years ago, when Gregg's used to sell freshly baked bread and rolls. The woman serving me was handling money, then picked up a French stick that I asked for. When I objected to her touching it with hands that had been handling money, she replied 'Its OK,I'm wearing protective gloves'. Er,yes, but the gloves had also touched the money!

Wouldn't bother me. It's not lab work.

dinmin · 28/04/2023 15:29

I’ve seen similar before and thought it odd!

Skinnermarink · 28/04/2023 15:41

It’ll be fine toasted 🤣

Seasonofthewitch83 · 28/04/2023 15:59

I think if I let my brain get to this level of thinking, I don't think I would touch or eat anything ever again.

Really? Seems like basic lack of hygiene to me.

Do you not wash your hands before you prepare food? Do you not wash fruit and vegetables?

Realistically washing hands between each customer is ridiculous .I go to baker regularly and gave never given it any thought TBH.
.Would you expect the person working on a checkout to wash hands between customers,? Not all supermarket food is wrapped.

Talapia · 28/04/2023 16:18

"We were all so paranoid over the past couple of years re keeping things clean" - yes, to our detriment. Everyone's immune's systems are ruined by it! This is perfectly fine in my opinion. It's not raw meat.

Seasonofthewitch83 · 28/04/2023 16:20

I don't wash fruit and veg unless it looks dirty.
I dont wash my hands before I eat unless I have been doing something dirty. In fact thinking about it, I dont think I ever see anyone else in the office go and wash their hands before eating either?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 28/04/2023 16:23

I would expect them to use tongs in that situation, or pick up using a bag over the hand that is then reversed over the bread.

Skinnermarink · 28/04/2023 16:25

I only wash off leeks, mushrooms and potatoes because they’re gritty otherwise.

At the peak of covid anxiety my boss (I was her nanny) had me washing off all her Ocado shopping and then either freezing or quarantining it and honestly it pretty much ruined any respect I had for her 🤣

AlyssumandHelianthus · 28/04/2023 16:27

You should see what goes on in a bread factory

Buebananas · 28/04/2023 16:34

That is really unhygienic!

She should either use tongs or wear thin gloves to handle the bread.

Handling money with her bare hands and then touching bread is disgusting.

Buebananas · 28/04/2023 16:39

this is a payment machine used in German bakeries and butchers. No cash it itches by the employees

I can't seem to paste any photos

Sudeko · 28/04/2023 16:40

They are filthy, especially the trendy ones with the open baking tables. It saves me a fortune.

Maybe this works:

It is a lack of basic hygiene. I'm amazed a food establishment would do it so obviously.

I always wash my hands before I prepare food but I don't wash my fruit or veg. I only really wash my hands after the loo, after doing anything dirty (ie gardening or cleaning) and before I prepare food (for other people....)

EustaceTheMonk · 28/04/2023 16:51

You've described every bakers I've every been in going back to the 60s. Still here.

ohtowinthelottery · 28/04/2023 16:59

Think the same happens in the bakers that I go to every week. Never even thought about it. We're all still here - fit and healthy.

Lockheart · 28/04/2023 17:04

Most dirt isn't actually going to do you any harm you know. I'd bet my house that had you eaten that bread you'd have been perfectly fine.

magneticmoon · 28/04/2023 17:04

In our house we see germs as really vital to developing a strong immune system. Very little cleaning or washing. We barely ever get ill at all. DC have 100% school attendance. I recommend you go roll in some mud then eat that bread with your bare hands.
