Rail strikes over Eurovision

I know they need to make an impact with their strikes, and hitting big events makes sure they are listened to...

However, it doesn't sit right to pick the Eurovision date. We are hosting this on behalf of Ukraine, a nation ravaged by death and war. It's about them not us and I think it's in really poor taste.

I completely agree OP. I predict they will lose a lot of public support from this.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 28/04/2023 08:39

Totally agree.

Bunnyannesummers · 28/04/2023 08:54

I agree. It also disproportionately impacts Liverpool, a city who has always been very supportive of strikes, where unions receive massive support and who are frequently screwed over by the government themselves.

I think they’ll now lose public support

Ifailed · 28/04/2023 08:55

most people will watch it on telly so won't be affected?

Ilovetocrochet · 28/04/2023 08:57

I think the rail strikes are also affecting the FA Cup final, making it difficult for all the Manchester fans going to watch.

crumpet · 28/04/2023 08:57

It feels mean spirited.

GreenWheat · 28/04/2023 09:00

Yep, they can feck orf with their bloody strikes. They have had numerous pretty decent offers and at this point they are losing public support at a rapid rate.

Thousands of people attend the actual shows, of which there are about ten and then people go to the Eurovision fan village and Euroclub.

Won't be as good to watch with a half empty audience.. it would be such a shame for the show to be underwhelming given the significance.

My heart sank when I saw the news alert. It's a big risk for them to take, a huge game of chicken really isn't it. Really disappointing, but there's still hope it will be called off.

RedRosie · 29/04/2023 22:42

We've had to decide to drive to be sure of getting there. So any ideas of where to park welcome!

soddingspiderseason · 29/04/2023 22:43

Yes, it's incredibly disrespectful to Ukraine. I've lost any sympathy with the rail unions now.

FreddiesTeeth · 29/04/2023 22:49

It's shit of them in this particular case yes. I've lost any sympathy.

Florenz · 29/04/2023 22:52

They're taking the piss. I can't wait for driverless trains.

Bonjovispjs · 29/04/2023 23:17

No sympathy for them whatsoever. It's just mean.

Or if they really want to be there will drive. Not everyone is interested in it.

User17439876 · 30/04/2023 03:30

It's very disrespectful as it is Ukraine's Eurovision and many were given the subsidised tickets and they may not be able to get there now

Dedodee · 30/04/2023 04:52

The whole point of strikes is to force the government’s hand. That’s much more likely to happen if an event like Eurovision is threatened with disruption.
Workers don’t strike for fun, we’ll rarely, they’re losing wages now to protect pay and conditions for everyone in the industry in the future.
The fact that the public are worried about the disruption is a good thing imo.

User17439876 · 30/04/2023 06:41

I doubt the government will care, I'm surprised they didn't strike for the coronation though as that is the biggest event

Cooknook · 30/04/2023 06:46

I agree, I think it's pathetic to be honest and I'm a big supporter of strikes in general. Such a shame for Liverpool to have this opportunity and for people travelling from all over Europe to face this disruption- especially as you say we are hosting on behalf of Ukraine.

The government doesn't care about nurses withdrawing ICU and A&E care in their strikes this next round so I'm not sure how bothered they'll be about this. I know plenty of people though who in general don't bother booking ot relying on trains anymore, seems a bold move to piss even more people off when revenue is down from wfh etc anyway.

drinkyourtea12 · 30/04/2023 06:48

TOCs are out on the 13th
ASLEF 12th

Cooknook · 30/04/2023 06:48

If the government do bow to their demands though I'd remember when it comes to the next election that they value money over peoples lives. We know this anyway but I don't see how anyone could still support them.

strawberryfluff · 30/04/2023 06:50

Usually I disagree with this sort of thing as the whole point of strikes is to make disruption but in this case you have a point. We are hosting it for a country affected by war it should be done to the absolute best of our ability.

MsWhitworth · 30/04/2023 06:59

Absolute morons. Good way to get people to stop habitually using the railways and therefore put their members jobs even more at risk due to decreasing revenue.

There is arena parking but if you can’t get in the Liverpool One and John Lewis Q parks are the next closest, followed by Hanover Street Q park, accessed at the side of Tesco. I’d go John Lewis personally
